Teacher Misery: Helicopter Parents, Special Snowflakes, and Other Bullshit
Teacher Misery: Helicopter Parents, Special Snowflakes, and Other Bullshit | Jane Morris
26 posts | 25 read | 52 to read
Teacher Misery perfectly encapsulates the comical misery that has become the teaching profession. Morris' strange, funny, and sometimes unbelievable teaching experiences are told through a collection of short stories, essays and artifacts including real emails from parents, students and administrators. From the parents who blame their son's act of arson on the teacher for causing him low self-esteem, to the student who offers to teach the teacher how to sell drugs so she can pay her bills, to the administrator whose best advice is to "treat kids like sacks of shit," one story is more shocking than the next. An important read for teachers and non-teachers alike-- Teacher Misery paints an amusing and thoroughly entertaining picture of what has become of our education system, without detracting from the overall point that what teachers have to put up with today is complete, utter, unacceptable insanity.

Yes, this book is funny, but it also makes a person want to cry because of its accuracy. Teaching is hard, and if you want to get a little insight as to why, read this book. The section on parents is particularly enlightening.

This book was hilarious. I found myself laughing out loud at the antics and craziness that is being a teacher. Also as a teacher it was nice to hear that lots of people go through the same ridiculous things

I‘m an elementary school teacher and this book is so relatable. Reading it during my prep and cracking up so much. The stories are unbelievable yet I‘ve had similar situations happen to me.

RaimeyGallant Great cover. And welcome to Litsy! #LitsyWelcomeWagon Some of us put together Litsy tips to help new Littens navigate the site. It's the link in my bio on my page in case you need it. Or if you prefer how-to videos, @chelleo put some together at the link in her bio. 5y

Got this one for $.99 on Black Friday. Loved it. You‘d think a teacher wouldn‘t want to spend their evenings reading about the insanity of someone else‘s teaching experience. Honestly- it made me feel better to know that I am not the only educator experiencing all the crazy! 😊 And I loved the way she ended the book: “Sometimes teaching is impossibly hard and heartbreaking and sometimes (though much less often) it‘s amazing, fun and inspiring. 👇

AmberWB “But it is never boring or ordinary or reasonable. And it is always hilarious.” Best way anyone could describe teaching. 5y
LiteraryinLawrence Sounds great. Have you ever read the tagged book, which sounds like it might be up your alley? My sister and I (both educators) were laughing out loud. 5y

Having taught/counseled for 30+ years, I could really relate to this book. It is hilarious at times, but it is also sad. I've been in really great school districts and others that had a lot of administrative weaknesses. I have encountered personal threats, cutting, and violence.Among others, the author discussed ineffective (or lack of) discipline, standards/testing, classroom management, and parents. God bless teachers 👨‍🏫

Velvetfur Wait - cutting and violence against you??? Good grief! 6y
Eggs Cutting themselves during restroom trips. And violence in general; throwing desks, chairs, pinning another student against wall, setting fire in restroom, endangering child in wheelchair 6y
HelloImJez I have so much respect for teachers, not only because they teach but because of the long hours, lack of pay (atleast in my country, I believe they deserve more) and the amount of crap they go through. I've read horror story after horror story about what it is to be a teacher and it never fails to shock me how crazy some parents can be! 6y
Eggs @HelloImJez this is true; parents can be one of the greatest challenges. Thanks for your comment😍 6y

I‘m sorry. I always want to support fellow teachers but I felt like this book wasn‘t balanced at all. It was horrible anecdote after horrible anecdote. There were very few funny or happily humorous stories in here at all- unless they were packed all at the end. I couldn‘t finish it. I would never have gone back to my classroom this week! If her experience was this awful why did she stay? Why would anyone stay?

Lova Just saying though- her Instagram account is funny and relatable. 6y

If I had to go through what this woman went through I would quit my job. I expected it to be funnier. I also did not enjoy how extremely negative it was. 💁Still going to pass it on to my teacher homies.

Finished the book in one sitting, and although it had some laugh out loud moments because I could relate, it seemed to be a teacher letting off steam. It may be things that need to be talked about, but not what I was looking for nor expecting. Many may love it, but too bitter for me. Made me thankful I teach where I do. In 23 years, I have never had the amount, nor the gravity of experiences she has had, and I have taught in multiple schools.

Light read, some good moments but I feel like the instagram account is more interesting than this book.

As a teacher, I always said I was going to write a book about my experiences. I feel like when I read this, I will see some of my own students in its pages.

Buy this for your teacher friends so they know they aren't alone. I thought this book was a very stark look at the majority of problems teachers face today: students, parents and administration. This book is a funny quick read that examines what like os really like for teachers. A lot of sad truths

This book is making me sad. Not because it isnt a good book, I am actually really enjoying it. But the situations are so sad and reflects where society is right now and how teachers are so underappreciated. It's discouraging to say the least.

This was both funny and sad. Funny because I can't believe the shit that students, parents and administrators pull. Sad because it shows how much bullying and bullshit teachers have to deal with. Thanks to NetGalley for a copy in return for a fair and honest review.

TheNextBook Now I have to read this. I work at a school so I can totally believe this 8y
Josie @TheNextBook I think you will get a kick out of it. I couldn't believe half the stuff she wrote about. Just crazy!!! 8y
Lauren_reading I need to check this out! It'll either be hilarious or depressing - but not much shocks me anymore after teaching for 13 years! 8y

TheNextBook @LaurenReads @Josie I requested it! I'm sure I'll die laughing at it! The things parents come up with! 8y
Josie @LaurenReads @TheNextBook I LOVED school and I was always so nice to my teachers and always did my work. My parents never had to get involved. So this was completely outrageous to me! Kudos to you two for having to deal with students and parents!! 8y
Peddler410 I'm a school librarian so I'm sure this will be a hoot! The stories my co-works and I can share would most likely fill a book. That's true of any teacher these days. 8y

Laugh out loud funny (or, if you're like me, cackle uncontrollably on the couch and annoy my family). An oh-so true look at today's teachers' experiences. A must read for every educator. It's nice to know we're not alone in the struggle and that the struggle is real!!
