Lush Life | Richard Price

'So, what do you do?' Whenever people asked him, Eric Cash used to have a dozen answers. Artist, actor, screenwriter . . . But now he's thirty-five years old and he's still living on the Lower East Side, still in the restaurant business, still serving the people he wanted to be. What does Eric do? He manages. Not like Ike Marcus. Ike was young, good-looking, people liked him. Ask him what he did, he wouldn't say tending bar. He was going places-until two street kids stepped up to him and Eric one night and pulled a gun. At least, that's Eric's version. In Lush Life, Richard Price tears the shiny veneer off the 'new' New York to show us the hidden cracks, the underground networks of control and violence beneath the glamour. Lush Life is an X-ray of the street in the age of no broken windows and 'quality of life' squads, from a writer whose "tough, gritty brand of social realism . . . reads like a movie in prose' Michiko Kakutani, The New York Times

I am a big fan of SVU & I‘m obsessed with everything NYC, so I was dismayed when the bizarre writing style Price employs here did nothing but make me cringe at the overwrought dialogue & jargon and wonder about his choice to alternately write out a paragraph-long sentence describing a woman's appearance, or an empty street, etc. and then leave out everything else. I detested meandering through the minds of shallow people I didn‘t care to follow.

britt_brooke Honest reviews fill my cold heart with joy. 🖤 5y
shelf-devoted Sounds like a nightmare. Have you read any of Price's stuff before? I picked up a secondhand copy of The Whites after reading a good review. It's been sitting unread on my shelf for ages - maybe I'm better off leaving it there! 5y
mrozzz No I haven‘t! And now I don‘t want to. I read this for a class I‘m taking but it had been on my shelf for 5 years. @shelf-devoted 5y

I love this book. Not only a great mystery, but a phenomenal social novel with Manhattan's Lower East Side as its backdrop. A murder reveals a complicated urban landscape where characters from a variety of socio-economic and cultural backgrounds criss cross paths in gentrified NYC. #GONEBABYGONE

I thought this title might be a #thistitleequalsgreatbandname. I used Google to find that there was an English band named Lush that formed in the late 80s so maybe this title is a little too similar but liked it anyway. I also thought A Storm of Swords might be a good name for a heavy metal band while looking through my books. #marchintoreading

In my house, bath bombs totally count as #readingequipment . When I worked for Lush, I always had more bath bombs than you could share a stick at. Now that I no longer work there, my stash is more reasonable. Christmas was very kind to me as far as bath bombs. 😂 #readjanuary

Melkyl I got my daughter Lush bath bombs for Christmas. She has been in heaven 😊 7y

mom2bugnbee I've heard so much about Lush... What makes them a step above in everyone's opinion? 7y
minkyb Too funny. I literally just left the lush store (buying bath bombs for my daughter) wandered into starbucks and checked my phone (and of course litsy) to see this post! 7y
acc5446 if i start to run out of Butterballs, i panic just a tiny bit!! Lush is definitely a favorite indulgence, and a wonderful add-on to a good book bath! ❤📚🛁 7y
Reviewsbylola I was a customer long before I worked there, but I was an employee for five years. It is just an amazing company. The founders are very present and involved and most importantly, very passionate. And I have used many bath bombs in my life. Nothing has ever compared. I love everything they sell, and have tons of their products that are not bath bombs, but baths are my guilty pleasure and go so nicely with a good book! @mom2bugnbee 7y
Reviewsbylola The Lush Kitchen on the UK site is making Butterball scented body conditioner this week. I am hoping to score a pot! 🙌🏻🙌🏻 @acc5446 7y
Reviewsbylola The stores are such an experience. I discovered Lush long before my area had a store so I remember whenever I got the chance to visit one, I was SO excited. Now I am hoping to one day visit a Lush Spa. 😍 @minkyb 7y
LeahBergen I received a sleeve of Lush bath bombs for Xmas. 👍🏼 7y
Reviewsbylola Everything in that bin is from christmas. I had actually, for the first time in recent memory, run out of bombs about a month ago. 😱 @LeahBergen Thankfully my #secretsanta @MMenefee sent me some or else I would have been in serious trouble. 7y
