Sidney Chambers and The Dangers of Temptation
Sidney Chambers and The Dangers of Temptation | James Runcie
14 posts | 8 read | 4 to read
It's the summer of love in late 1960s. The Apollo 11 astronauts are preparing to land on the moon, the war in Biafra dominates the news and Basil D'Oliveira has just been dropped from the England cricket team before a test series in apartheid South Africa. In the midst of all this change, Sidney Chambers, the loveable English clergyman, continues his amateur sleuthing investigations. A bewitching divorcée enlists Sidney's help in convincing her son to leave a hippie commune' at a soiree on Grantchester Meadows during May Week celebrations, a student is divested of a family heirloom; Amanda's marriage runs into trouble; Sidney and Hildegard holiday behind the Iron Curtain; Mrs. Maguire's husband returns from the dead; and an arson attack in Cambridge leads Sidney to uncover a cruel cast of blackmail involving his former curate. In the rare gaps between church and crime, Sidney struggles with a persistent case of toothache, has his first flutter at the Newmarket races, and witnesses the creation of a classic rock song. Charming, witty, intelligent, and filled with a strong sense of compassion, these six new stories are guaranteed to satisfy and delight this clerical detective's many fans.

📚Sidney & 📺Sidney have long since parted ways. Which is a shame cause 📚Sidney, really all the characters, are more complex than 📺counterparts. 📚Sidney is middle-aged but still the rebel young vicar at heart. Still loves his whisky & jazz but now listens to Pink Floyd as well. I love his heart, his compassion, his vow to change his Church for the better. Dear Sweet Leonard You deserve every happiness. #bookvstv #bookdoesitbetter #grantchester

Crinoline_Laphroaig Yes there is a display inside the Church. Wonder how they feel about the Season 3 scene on the stairs? 6y

How could I not have known that Pink Floyd has a song called Grantchester Meadows? It was quiet the morning when we there. I guess mad cows and hippies only show up for Sidney🌻🐄🐝

Libby1 😃 I really enjoy this series. 6y
ErickaS_Flyleafunfurled I didn‘t know that either! (And I call myself a fan - for shame 🤦‍♀️) And I love the show too! (edited) 6y
Crinoline_Laphroaig @ErickaS_Flyleafunfurled It has all the sounds of the meadow! 6y

The fifth instalment of the Grantchester Mysteries is very much a Pick from me.

I began reading this series because I was curious to see how a person of faith in late 20th century England would be portrayed. Would he be an object for ridicule? Would he be holier-than-thou? Wish-washy? Hateful?

But this series presents beautifully realised characters who struggle meaningfully and lovingly with the complexities of life.

Leelee.reads This book gets a poor rating on litsy (40%) but there are no reviews that aren't positive to explain why some readers didn't like it. I think it sounds interesting! 7y
Libby1 @Leelee.reads - it was at 0% before my rating! Yes, I think it probably has to do with the fact that the book deals with some controversial social issues in a progressive way. Maybe some people who think this might be a cozy religious mystery won't like that? Maybe I shouldn't assume this. My faith is important to me but I often find myself on the outside looking in with others with whom I worship. 7y
Libby1 @Leelee.reads - I wrote a reply to you with a spoiler warning. What I've revealed is VERY minor, but I just wanted to add it just in case! 7y
CrowCAH Love the BBC TV adaptation!!! 7y
Libby1 @CrowCAH - I haven't watched it yet but I plan to do so! 7y

#SockSunday

My hedgehog socks feel very autumnal as I finish this surprisingly deep and thoughtful mystery.

"He could not quite believe the camaraderie that was on display. He felt that everyone was going through the motions of having a good time in order to avoid any true show of feeling; that those around him were willing everything to be all right even though they knew it probably wasn't."

This is my experience with drinking culture in a society in conflict. I've found it to be rarely fun and never relaxing.

This cottage is located in Grantchester, England, where this series of books takes place.

I picture Sidney Chambers living in a little place like this with his faithful dog and his trusty curate.

(From the Britain and Ireland In Time Facebook page.)

LauraBrook Love this!! So beautiful, and I can totally picture everyone in that house. ❤️ 7y
Libby1 I took a screenshot of this ages ago thinking I'd share it when I started the next book in the series. Tonight was the night, @LauraBrook . I hope you're having a good weekend! 🕊 7y

Blueberry Is that called a thatched roof? 7y
Libby1 Yes, it's a thatched roof, @Blueberry . We have a house with one right down the road from where we live. It does look beautiful, doesn't it, @Lmstraubie and @BarbaraBB . 7y

I liked this detail from the cover.

This is book 5 in the Sidney Chambers series, and I've enjoyed them all.

Another addition to yesterday's lovely #LibraryHaul .

...and a final pic of the books I opened yesterday, because my photo then was pretty 😐. Thank you so much @ TrishB! These will keep me out of trouble for months! Kind of wishing I didn't have to work, and could get on with some reading. 😁#summersantagoespostal #summersolsticebookexchange

TrishB Always wishing could read not work! 💜 7y
rockpools @TrishB I've just realised it's only Thursday! If I quit faffing about (I wish!) and magically become super-efficient over the next 2 days, I can take the whole weekend off to read! 7y

Still working my way through this - short (ish) stories make for great bedtime reading. I do like Sidney - the best bits of the C of E!

Libby1 I really like these books. Is this the most recent one? 8y
Verity @Libby1 yes - it's the newest one we have here in the UK 8y
Libby1 @Verity - I'm in the UK, too. 😀 8y
Verity @Libby1 I don't know why I automatically assume everyone else is in the US! 8y
Libby1 I understand, @Verity . I'm in the strange position of being FROM the US but have spent the last 16 years either in Northern Ireland or England. 🇬🇧 8y

Found this on the shelf for a bit of bedtime reading - Sidney Chambers number 5!

We're well into the 1960s now - complete with hippies and cults.
