The Last Great Dance on Earth
The Last Great Dance on Earth: A Novel | Sandra Gulland
6 posts | 9 read | 1 reading | 6 to read
The Last Great Dance on Earth is the triumphant final volume of Sandra Gulland's beloved trilogy based on the life of Josephine Bonaparte. When the novel opens, Josephine and Napoleon have been married for four tumultuous years. Napoleon is Josephine's great love, and she his. But their passionate union is troubled from within, as Josephine is unable to produce an heir, and from without, as England makes war against France and Napoleon's Corsican clan makes war against his wife. Through Josephine's heartfelt diary entries, we witness the personal betrayals and political intrigues that will finally drive them apart, culminating in Josephine's greatest tragedy: her divorce from Napoleon and his exile to Elba. The Last Great Dance on Earth is historical fiction on a grand scale and the stirring conclusion to an unforgettable love story.

#3books that made me cry --
The first two are #Hungarian, a moving coming-of-age story by Magda Szabo, and a beautiful book by Kriszta D. Tóth about her mom. The Last Great Dance on Earth is the third book in Gulland's Josephine B trilogy, which deals with Napoleon's final years in France from Josephine's vantage point. Each book in the trilogy is great but this last one really moved me to tears 😌

I love Josephine. This is the last in the trilogy and it was great, obviously it has a sad ending.
And men, what is it with crowns and sons 💔
#jennyis30 #regency (this one takes place mainly in that time period).

Andrew65 Loved this whole trilogy. 4y
deirdrebeecher I miss historical fiction, finding it really hard to find new stuff of this quality apart from Mantel (who is off in her own league). Too often when I search for historical fiction it is historical fantasy which pops up, and while I love that too, they are not the same thing. 4y
TrishB @Andrew65 it was really good 👍🏻 4y
TrishB @deirdrebeecher have you read Sharon Penman? I think she‘s up there withMantel. Elizabeth Chadwick is also worth a try (not as ‘meaty‘ as the other two but still good!). 4y
Caroline2 Sounds brilliant, I just ordered the first book off eBay! 😉 4y
