Chestnut Street | Maeve Binchy
57 posts | 25 read | 4 to read
Maeve Binchy imagined a street in Dublin with many characters coming and going, and every once in a while she would write about one of these people. She would then put it in a drawer; for the future, she would say. The future is now. Across town from St. Jarlaths Crescent, featured in Minding Frankie, is Chestnut Street, where neighbors come and go. Behind their closed doors we encounter very different people with different life circumstances, occupations, and sensibilities. Some of the unforgettable characters lovingly brought to life by Binchy are Bucket Maguire, the window cleaner, who must do more than he bargained for to protect his son; Nessa Byrne, whose aunt visits from America every summer and turns the houseand Nessas worldupside down; Lilian, the generous girl with the big heart and a fianc whom no one approves of; Melly, whose gossip about the neighbors helps Madame Magic, a self-styled fortune-teller, get everyone on the right track; Dolly, who discovers more about her perfect mother than she ever wanted to know; and Molly, who learns the cure for sleeplessness from her pen pal from Chicago . . . Chestnut Street is written with the humor and understanding that are earmarks of Maeve Binchys extraordinary work and, once again, she warms our hearts with her storytelling. This eBook edition includes a Reading Group Guide.

Like any short story collection, some were stronger than others, but this was a pleasant listen each morning. #treadmillbook

More like a series of short stories as we get glimpses into the lives of various neighbors from Chestnut Street.

Maeve Binchy is one of my favorite authors and it was nice to read one last thing from her. The stories were short, quick reads, but told a story in a way that only she could do.

Such a cute collection of character stories. They thread together slightly in parts and those were my favorite moments.

EadieB @Andrew65 It seems like Nuala was right about saying nothing to her daughter. But it certainly is a hard thing to do. The parents that said too much are on the outs but Nuala gave her money and food . Not sure that was a wise thing to do especially giving money for the down-payment. Will she ever get her money back now that they are having money problems? 4y

EadieB @Andrew65 It seemed as though Ella and Harry's relationship was one-sided. Ella seemed to be doing everything to take care of Harry's needs while Harry was doing absolutely nothing for Ella. Not a very healthy relationship. When Ella realized, while sitting at the bar with Greg, the author, and Harry that Harry was so preoccupied looking at himself in the mirror instead of focusing on Ella, she then decided she would go to the sales conference. 4y

EadieB @Andrew65 I would have thought the same as Philip‘s sons did as Philip and Rona were whispering and she kissed him on the cheek. Goes to show that things sometimes are not as they seem. Shocking that the mother was the one that had an affair. 4y
Andrew65 @EadieB Yes that was a great and shocking twist at the end! We‘d all totally bought into the father having an affair, and Maeve set that up perfectly! 4y
EadieB @Andrew65 Maeve does have a very good insight into how people react to certain situations. She was an amazing person and writer and it shows in her writing. 4y
Andrew65 @EadieB She was, totally unique and knew how to tell a good story - short or long. I don‘t particularly enjoy short stories but I did enjoy this book. 4y

EadieB @Andrew65 Yes, Mac was very irresponsible in not caring for his son and didn‘t ever acknowledge that he had a son. I was glad the Rita put him in his place. Madame Frances didn‘t give Rita credit for all she did in the boutique and I was glad that everyone was asking about Rita. Two wrongs were definitely righted snd Mac and Madame Frances got what they deserve. 4y
Andrew65 @EadieB This was a great revenge case set up, playing the long game. Used their own personalities against them! They certainly got what they deserved. 4y

Andrew65 @EadieB Melly was certainly some personality, and totally overpowered them with her all consuming personality. I do think she did turn out to be good for them. 4y

EadieB @Andrew65 Yes they should have worked harder to stay together. They both seem to still care about each other. Forgive and forget and chalk the bimbo up as a mistake. Divorce is not always the answer especially when children are involved. Marriages have a way of getting stronger after such mistakes. 4y
Andrew65 @EadieB It certainly felt as if they were throwing away something special. I don‘t know how I‘d feel if a partner was unfaithful, something you would only know if it happened to you. Dekko certainly brought out the best in their relationship. 4y

EadieB @Andrew65 Philip is all business and no play. He has no idea about what it takes to be caring and understanding in relationships. I found him to be self-centered and selfish and only caring about succeeding in whatever he takes on. I don‘t have much hope of Philip having a balanced life unless he takes a course in relationships. Only then may he succeed at having a relationship but I‘m not sure there would be much warmth. 4y
Andrew65 @EadieB I worry about Phillip, so intense in all he does! So task focused. Worry about his heart, blood pressure and heart going forward. Needs a good, and strong, woman by his side to take him in hand. 4y

EadieB @Andew65 I think it‘s fine that Helen and Chester marry even though he was so much older. I think it depends on the people and their needs whether or not the marriage will work. The only time I would disagree is if one person was taking advantage or controlling the other person. 4y
Andrew65 @EadieB it did sound like a loving positive relationship for Helen. If that is the case what does it matter about age. My wife is 10 years older than me but we have one of the best relationships I know, most of the people I knew around my age were far too immature. (edited) 4y
EadieB @Andrew65 I think you were just very mature! It seems to me that your mother did a very good job on her own raising you and giving you a lot of attention and guidance and it shows in how you care about and treat people. 4y
See All 9 Comments
Andrew65 @EadieB This is very true, all through school I had a much more sensible and mature look than those around me. Often made it difficult mixing with others at that age. 4y
EadieB @Andrew65 You were just a very old soul with a lot of common sense. I can see where it would be difficult to fit in though. 4y
Andrew65 @EadieB Sometimes too in on myself! Social situations aren‘t particularly my forte. 4y
EadieB @Andrew65 Really! I wouldn't not think that because you are so social on Litsy and LibraryThing! 4y
Andrew65 @EadieB Possibly find it easier when I have time to think what I want to say and have something to talk about, e.g. books, etc. In social situations personally sometimes struggle to think what to say that is interesting 😂 Possibly a confidence issue. Much better in writing, emails etc. (edited) 4y

EadieB Bucket was a very nice and caring person but his son, Eddie was very troublesome and made friends with a not so nice friend, Nest. Eddie definitely needs ‘tough love‘ just like I gave to my stepson and he finally straighten up and now has a wonderful wife, job and daughter. My husband was too soft on him and I forced him to get tough. Today my stepson thanks me. 4y
Andrew65 @EadieB Too nice, soft and easy going. Eddie took full advantage of this. He got himself in a very tough place & but for Bucket would never have got out of it. I do worry what would happen to Bucket when he came out of the house, thinking he‘d already left on the bike! Children need tough love at times. Same for my youngest son, without that tough love he would have gone totally off the rails. Now a captain in RAF. Good to hear about your stepson. (edited) 4y

Apologies a bit late with this section of questions.

EadieB Divorce doesn't solve marriage problems. Most times the problems move on to the next relationship. Couples need to work on their problems before moving on to a new relationship. Sometimes problems and finding solutions can make your marriage stronger. The divorce laws make it too easy to give up on your marriage.

I don't think Ronan wants to get married again. If he is already getting the milk, why does he need to buy the cow?
4y
Andrew65 @EadieB Too often these days people don‘t try to resolve any issues or problems. You need to work at relationships and if you do can end up with a great life partner. 4y
Andrew65 @EadieB Ronan definitely was not interested in marriage! Warning signs there for her! 4y

mommyincolortv Absolutely! I am a person who used to stress over things completely out of my control. And I learned that not only should I accept that there are situations I can't control, but there are people I can't control either. I can only control my response to people and situations. Great question. 4y
EadieB Yes I agree with Miss Mack. People choose who they are and what they want to be. We have to learn to accept that as it's very hard to change people when they don't really want to change. 4y

Tove_Reads I‘m sure she has many reasons and events in her past that made her what she is. Wouldn‘t call her a loser, but a young girl most definitely could call her that. I‘d say she‘s insecure and sad. 4y
EadieB Aunt Elizabeth told Nessa that staying home wheeling a pram up and down Chestnut Street would mark Nessa as a loser. Since Elizabeth ended up pregnant too but gave her baby away and never wanted to acknowledge her child made Nessa look upon her aunt as a real loser too. She finally what her aunt's life really was like. (edited) 4y
TheBookHippie Nope. There is always story to experience to what choices someone made to get them to their current place. We can‘t judge. I imagine it‘s a combination of things. Loser wasn‘t a word I‘d use. 4y
rubyslippersreads I think Aunt Elizabeth did the best with the circumstances she had, considering the stigma attached to being an “unwed mother” (especially in Ireland) at the time. I wouldn‘t call her a loser, but I think her life is sad. 4y

EadieB All young girls dream of their wedding day but as you do get older a wedding day doesn't seem as important. Years ago it was frowned upon for couples to live together before getting married. The 60's changed a lot of views about this as it was a period of free love and the view of marriage for couples in love went by the wayside in most cases. I didn't think Larry and Maura would get married as they seemed like a very contented couple as is. 4y
TheBookHippie Ack I never was the little girl who wanted to be a bride and still don‘t understand it so 🤷🏽‍♀️ I imagine it changes as you age? Faithfulness and commitment and having your person doesn‘t need a piece of paper or ceremony for me. If it‘s needed for the culture or society to acknowledge to prevent trouble 🤷🏽‍♀️ and if it‘s what you desire than lovely. All relationships have beauty not sure what the day date or ceremony do. Just me🤣😫🙃 4y
rubyslippersreads I think Maura secretly wanted to get married, no matter what she said. 4y
Andrew65 @TheBookHippie I agree, don‘t need a piece of paper to prove your love, and so many people tear up that paper as well so simply not worth the paper it is written on. We‘ve been together 33 years but never had a piece of paper to show it but stronger than most relationships I know. @rubyslippersreads I agree I think she wants to get married, however agree with @EadieB I don‘t think they will get married. 4y

Tove_Reads No matter how nice you are there will always be someone who doesn‘t like you. Pleasing people to the fullest won‘t make her happy. Im sure it really is easy to be friendlier to people than needed. I just believe that if you try to be everyone‘s friend you end up having no real friends. I think she‘ll end up in really tricky situations due to what she‘s doing. 4y
TheBookHippie @Tove_Reads reminds me of the saying you can be the juiciest ripest most delicious peach and someone will still declare they don‘t like peaches and some who say they never did care for peaches !!! It‘s impossible to be everyone‘s friend. Kind yes, friend no . People pleasing kills self .. I don‘t think it‘ll end well! 4y
EadieB Dolly's mother was always positive and nice to everyone but in a way she was not being honest of her true feelings. I think it's best to be honest and let people know where they stand with you instead of always agreeing with people with a smile on your face and hiding your true feelings. Dolly soon realized that things were not always honky dory as her mother acted like they were. 4y
rubyslippersreads I got the feeling that Dolly‘s mother tried so hard to be perfect, it just sort of made Dolly give up. 4y

@Andrew65 It seems as though the chapters are the same but the page numbers are not the same. For example: your Dolly‘s Mother chapter starts on page 1 and in my book it is page 3. So don‘t use page numbers just chapter names.

Andrew65 Thanks, I always tend to use chapters for that reason, often page numbers differ in the different versions of the book. 4y

This is the order of the stories for the #MaeveBinchyBuddyRead of Chestnut Street. These are taken from the American version on The National Emergency Library. I have checked with my English Version (got out from the library before lockdown) and thankfully they appear the same this time.

The only difference I have found is an extra story at the end in the UK version called Tara‘s Horse. Hopefully this will mean we won‘t have the same problems 👇

Andrew65 👆as last time. I will post the schedule tomorrow. 😊 4y
EadieB @Andrew65 chapter names are the same but my first chapter starts with page 3 while yours starts on page 1 4y
JacqMac It looks the same to me. :) 4y
Andrew65 @JacqMac @EadieB That‘s good, I always tend to use chapters because page numbers can differ in books. 4y
EadieB @Andrew65 👍🏻Chapters is the way to go! 4y

Due to work schedules in relation to Coronavirus I wasn‘t able to do the #MaeveBinchyBuddyRead in March so aiming to start this short stories book on 19th April, apologies for the delay.

All welcome to join us and if not got a copy of the book you can get a free loan copy from the National Emergency Library that we can all access during Lockdown.

We will aim to read over 5 sections.

EadieB @Andrew65 Sounds good! 👌 I‘ve got my book ready! 4y
Bren912 Wait. There is a national emergency library!? 4y
Andrew65 @Bren912 Yes and gives you free access at the moment to a lot of books online. Not easiest search engine but read 3 or 4 books from there so far that been wanting to read for a long time and my library didn‘t have. Well worth checking out. Think you can loan up to 10 books and get two weeks. https://archive.org (edited) 4y

Hi Everyone, apologies I‘ve not communicated about Chestnut Street #MaeveBinchyBudfyRead. The school I am Principal at was still open this week. Then announcement came on Wednesday that would close on Friday, but reopen on Monday as Care facility for Critical Workers and for any very vulnerable children. This has all taken up EVERY minute since, today first time had 5 minutes to myself but about to head into school. Hence my absence on Litsy 👇

Andrew65 🖕 Hopefully things should settle down in the next few days and I can then get the buddy read started. Thanks for your patience with me. Stay safe! (edited) 4y
cobwebmoth Sending positive thoughts to you! That is a lot to be dealing with. 4y
EadieB @Andrew65 Do what you need to do and we can continue our group reads when things get back to normal. You be sure to stay safe and don't wear yourself down. (edited) 4y

ljuliel Andrew, I don‘t think anyone would mind if you skip this month and bump the book til next month. It sounds as if you have your hands full. 4y
TheBookHippie @EadieB I agree with you @Andrew65 just let us know. My heart is with you! Take care of you!!! 4y
Bookwormjillk Hang in there @Andrew65 4y

JacqMac We understand. Everything is all topsy turvy everywhere. Remember to take care of you. Much love and be careful. 💕 4y
rubyslippersreads Don‘t worry—I‘m behind anyway, as usual. 😏 Take good care of yourself while you‘re taking care of others. ❤️ 4y
CarolynM Take care, Andrew.🤗 4y
TheAromaofBooks Oh my goodness, this sounds so stressful! I hope everything goes as well as it can. Take care of yourself! 4y
Andrew65 Thanks everyone, end of day 1 and now everything organised and in place so I can take a some downtime. Been the most stressful four days I have known. We sent a letter to children that had us all in tears but had a very positive reaction from parents. @cobwebmoth @EadieB @ljuliel @TheBookHippie @Bookwormjillk @tracey38 @Lcsmcat @Slajaunie @Crazeedi @JacqMac @rubyslippersreads @CarolynM @TheAromaofBooks 4y
Andrew65 I think we should set up a support group on here during this time and all get together at the same time each day to support us through this. These groups we have set up for staff, families and children are having a really positive impact and helping morale. 4y
Andrew65 Will hopefully get to the book Wednesday or Thursday this week. 4y
TheBookHippie @Andrew65 I miss my kids terribly and I‘m so worried if they‘re safe, so I get how you feel. Thinking of you. Posting how we feel would be good set a time and we can individually post and see how many there are of us feeling the exact same 🤷🏽‍♀️ 4y
TheAromaofBooks This is so hard!!! Also, I just realized that Litsy tagged a book for me in my earlier comment, and I have no idea why! 🙄 4y
Crazeedi @Andrew65 👍❤🥰 4y

ljuliel Thanks for the tag, Andrew. I‘m passing on this. I‘m not a huge short story fan , so I‘ll sit this one out. Have fun to those participating. 🙂 4y
Andrew65 @ljuliel No me either but I did commit to these. See you when we choose a new author. 4y

Second book of my vacation. This was perfect poolside reading for me. Quick light stories. Couldn‘t put it down.
