What an odd, haunting, yet beautiful book. An anti-fairytale.

I‘ve heard so many good things about this creepy fairytale. Beautiful illustrations but very dark tale. Looking forward to it!
Wow, this graphic novel was darker than I expected. little figures climb out of the dead 💀 body of a young girl and fight to survive. They might be small and look cute but they are monstrous in their treatment of each other and the forest creatures.

Jez Louise this was a great read, but a heck of a lot darker than I thought it was going to be! Such a shock but in a good way 😂
This book was all the good kinds of terrible and evil. I never read an anti-fairytale before, and it was a trip. A great genre for Halloween spooky times and the lucid watercolor images just give this graphic novel an extra creep factor. #BeautifulDarkness #FabienVehlmann #Kerascoët
This is the most messed-up graphic novel ever. I give you a panel that isn't, though.
Beautiful art and a intriguing dark tale! Perfect for a hot day spent in front of the evaporative cooler. Pretty sure this was a #blamelitsy
#HeatOfJuly Day 11: This immensely disturbing graphic novel does speak of #TheBeautifulOnes with a tinge of darkness in them. Despite the heated-oven ending where the narcissistic villainess supposedly got her comeuppance, I found no redemption in this tale, the creators had none to give. The reader is left to find scraps of those from the occasional vacuous kindness for the beautiful darknesses to sneer at in its vapid naivete. Link to review⬇ï¸
Beautiful Darkness is just as the title implies. There‘s a whole host of beautiful or adorable little people (think The Borrowers) trying to make a life in a scary new world. But it‘s quickly apparent these little elves are naive, cruel, and selfish. As everyone slowly succumbs to some terrible death, either by accident or cold-blooded murder, this faerie tale story ends as disturbingly as it started.
Very weird and very recommended!
The disturbing story of Beautiful Darkness is paired with beautiful, water-coloured panels. The many oddball characters are illustrated uniquely. Kerascoët has such an interesting style that pours creativity out of every page. Though not on glossy paper like Satania, Drawn & Quarterly has a perhaps even better printing. I didn‘t notice any text errors, and the high quality paper works well with the softer palette of this book.
Beautiful Darkness is an unconventional and unsettling fairytale where its ending is a not-so-happy one; well ... depending on which sides you were on. A so-so read. While I adore the beautiful soft watercolour illustrations, I didn't enjoy the story as much as I thought I would.

This is a gorgeous book. When mentoring kids I sometimes am allowed to find alternatives to required reading...this is what I use for Lord of the Flies. It's illustrations are gorgeous and the story is really well done ...presently reading it again with a student .

The back cover copy describes this as an anti-fairy tale, but really it's as dark and disturbing as the original fairy tales were. There are no good guys. It's grotesque with an art style that would be lovely in a children's picture book. The story shows "people" at their very worst, and that even the best are capable of the macabre.
Thank you @LibrarianJen . This was the exact quick creepy read I was in the mood for this morning.
So much darker than expected, and I'm still not totally sure how I felt about it. Probably not a recommendation for me, but the artwork was good. I didn't care for any of the characters either... have you read it. What did you think?
#KitchenNightmares is still on, and I'm going to dig into this one. 👌

The sweetness and grim darkness of an old school fairy tale with great illustrations. Pretty and weird, what's not to like?
I am so confused. But the artwork was lovely?
The beauty of this book hides all of the darkness- so much so that it creeps up and takes you by surprise... over and over again. #goingonthebookshelf thanks, Momma @Wife
Take Inside Out, murder Riley, and let her emotions set up a society of thoughtless violence and meaningless acts of terror. Watch as Joy slowly looses her capacity for goodness, and you would be very close to the plot if this story. It's beautiful and terrible, and though I think it needs a second reading, I'm not sure I want to experience it again. This is definitely one that will stick with me, as I try to work through my feelings about it.
Well I'm not sure I have any idea what the heck I just read...🤔 I'm somewhere between pick and so-so but I tend to lean toward the higher rating.
This is one of the most beautiful, disturbing things I've ever read. Its title is very appropriate, so don't expect some whimsically dark fairy tale; this is nihilism coated in a candy shell.
My sister lent me this graphic novel and I honestly don't know what I think about it. It's very weird but quite enjoyable. Mostly weird though🤔
A Lord of the Flies/Survival of the fittest for fairy tale characters. After the last couple of days it felt appropriate. It's bizarre. A bit gory. Without the art itself it would've been a pretty easy pan for me.
Thinking of my #favoritevillain I immediately thought of Zelie. Terribly cruel and power-hungry, her followers admire her for her beauty, killing or dying for her without hesitation. There are a lot of terrible deaths in Beautiful Darkness, but Zelie is usually behind the more sinister occurrences. #riotgrams
I read this graphic novel last night. It's creepy and sometimes disturbing due to the violence portrayed. Overall message seems to be that being nice will only get you screwed over. I rate it so-so in that some of the scenes and the way violence and social discord were portrayed seemed a bit cartoonish. Otherwise, a good Lord-of-the-Flies type story.
Yay! Book mail! I'm sure I'm not alone here in that getting new books always makes my day.
Without a doubt this is the weirdest book I've ever read in my life. I'm not sure if it's a good thing or bad thing, but it was gripping.
They had me at anti-fairy tale and then this happens.
#FunFridayPhoto challenge pick, and also the book that Liberty recommended to me! This is a great little adventure and kind of like a soap opera with the deceit and twists and turns. I loved it! I'm on a graphic novel kick lately and this is a great one! ðŸ‘😎ðŸ˜ðŸ˜»ðŸ“šðŸ¤“😉
Picked up my recommendation from @Liberty at the library today!! I know I am going to love it! Thanks!! ðŸ˜ðŸ˜ðŸ˜ðŸ˜ŽðŸ˜ŽðŸ˜ŽðŸ˜»ðŸ˜»ðŸ˜»ðŸ¤“🤓ðŸ‘ðŸ‘📚📚📚
Excellent graphic novel. Beautiful illustrations. Works well to convey "Lord of the flies " lessons. It is dark, so person should be in high school to read this. Worked well tutoring kids who don't want to read traditional books. Good discussions .
