Pickpick

This collection of 64 very short stories centered around food may be my favorite of the year. The longest story (and inspiration for the outrageous cover 👄😂) is 10 pages, but most are 1-3, with a few flash fiction appetizers of a paragraph, and one that is 2 words. The stories are all somewhat dark but run the gamut in other ways: funny, gross, magical, disturbing. Crace's humor and gifts for elevating his spare prose is the main course 🍳🍇🍎🍴

Billypar And one other strange thing: this is the only story collection I've read where the stories are numbered rather than named. No idea why 🤷‍♂️ 1d
BarbaraBB This sounds right up my alley! Stacking! 1d
Tamra I‘m intrigued! 1d

Billypar @BarbaraBB Yes, I definitely think you'll enjoy this one! 23h
Billypar @Tamra It sat on my shelf for at least two years somehow - I wish I picked it up sooner. 23h
Billypar @sarahbarnes On the train to work, I noticed myself angling it away from other passengers 😳 23h

I love Jim Crace‘s writing so I snagged these two today while I was at the Printer‘s Row Lit Fest in Chicago. The hardcover is a really cool looking Franklin Library edition of two of James Cain‘s most famous novellas (so really two books for the price of one 🙃). I stayed under budget and stayed dry, too-the called for rain held off during my visit.

Lcsmcat I‘ve only ever read Quarantine by Crace, but loved it. I might have to look for these. 6y
AlaMich Was LitFest this weekend? 😧 I clearly wasn‘t paying attention! Did you see any authors? 6y
Lola @Lcsmcat I‘ll have to look for that one. I passed up a copy of Being Dead because I think I may actually own that one 🤔🙃😂 Edited to add: I just checked and I do indeed own (edited) 6y
Lola @AlaMich Yes, it was. I didn‘t do any presentations/talks this year-just meandered around and checked out the bounty. 6y
