The Hundred Lies of Lizzie Lovett
The Hundred Lies of Lizzie Lovett | Chelsea Sedoti
112 posts | 103 read | 64 to read
Hawthorn wasn't trying to insert herself into a missing person's investigation. Or maybe she was. But that's only because Lizzie Lovett's disappearance is the one fascinating mystery their sleepy town has ever had. Bad things don't happen to popular girls like Lizzie Lovett, and Hawthorn is convinced she'll turn up at any moment-which means the time for speculation is now.So Hawthorn comes up with her own theory for Lizzie's disappearance. A theory way too absurd to take seriously...at first. The more Hawthorn talks, the more she believes. And what better way to collect evidence than to immerse herself in Lizzie's life? Like getting a job at the diner where Lizzie worked and hanging out with Lizzie's boyfriend. After all, it's not as if he killed her-or did he?Told with a unique voice that is both hilarious and heart-wrenching, Hawthorn's quest for proof may uncover the greatest truth is within herself. "

Sedoti walks a fine line with such an unreliable narrator. This coming-of-age story could have came off as campy, but she pulls it off by giving Hawthorn some redeeming qualities that flesh out as the story progresses. It would be easy for the reader to assume that she is immature for her age, but in fact, it is simply lack of life experience—Hawthorn has only had one friend and is therefore stunted when it comes to forming relationships.

I feel like this story took a while to build up and get somewhere good. The majority of the book was spent focused on the main character‘s obsession with a werewolf conspiracy theory, it was so ridiculous it took away from the story.

The last 50 pages were the best, but getting there was so hard. I don‘t recommend.

1.5/5. this was actually so terrible. it was about this girl that thinks another girl (lizzie) that hat gone missing was a WEREWOLF. yes. you read that correctly. also, this girl was so condescending and also acting so angsty. that‘s all i have to say, besides i wouldn‘t read this if i were you.

this book is honestly so dumb. this girl thinks that this missing girl, lizzie, is a werewolf and is conducting an investigation. not what i signed up for ?? also, this girl needs to stop acting so depressed, what‘s her problem?

On the other hand, if I tried to save us both, there was a good chance I‘d get bitten in the process, and then I‘d have roughly twenty-four hours before I became a zombie too. And from what I‘ve read, the process of turning into a zombie is totally painful.

If this narrator says “Maybe. Probably.” one more time, I may scream. This, along with the list of three “curses” Hawthorn gives to anyone who wrongs her, takes me right out of the story (if I was invested in the first place).

Bailedbailed

A little bit late to the Big Library Read party, but I am pleased to announce this as my 3rd DNF of 2017. Seriously, who picked this? Maybe I‘m just a grouch, but Hawthorn with her teenage ennui and poor decision making was UNBEARABLE. I bailed about a third of the way in and I regret nothing. What did everyone else think?

Special thanks to @Pamwurtzler for the DNF support 😘

JacqMac I bailed, too. It was pretty disappointing. 6y

A story of a high school senior who becones obsessed with a missing person fron her small town. I enjoyed the voice the author gave the main character but had a difficult time that a Senior in high school would believe, say, do and feel the way the author imagined. A middle schooler, yes, but then the author couldn't include some of the situations in which she places the main character. Interesting choice for a Big Library Read

I felt that this book had potential until I got into the story! The popular girl was missing. The main character weirdly obsessed about the disappearance even though she didn‘t like her! Then haunted houses, werewolves, hippies living in the backyard and questionable parenting skills! Then unexplained suicide! An interesting choice for The Big Library Read!

JacqMac I DNF this one. It was a strange choice, I agree. 6y

SassenachTheBookWizard I really wanted to like this. Sadly I. dNFed it but I'm glad I tried a different book than I normally read 6y
JoeStalksBeck Did you like this book? I thought I‘d was more on a juvenile level than YA. It just didn‘t have the punch I thought it would 6y
Redjewel_7734 I went back & forth on this one. There are things I liked & appreciated in the story, but I‘m mot sure if they quite make up for its many flaws. 6y
JacqMac I‘m not finished yet. It‘s not horrible, but it kind of lost my interest. I just have other books that I‘d rather be reading. 6y

Just a couple more days to get the book for free from your Library‘s OverDrive Center; make sure to get your copy!

Pamwurtzler I think Hawthorn was so wrapped up in the scenario that she created that she was devastated when the truth was discovered. 6y

Dark mysterious handsome older guy: "you're not like other people"

Annoying and unlikeable AF high school girl: "no, I'm not"

Me: NOPE! *slams book shut and tosses across room* too many books to read to push through this shit.

One of those books where I get why no one likes the main character and that's not meant as a compliment

This was a hard one to rate for me...it‘s right on the edge of so-so & pick. I found Lizzie a believable teen & her self-focus fit-weren‘t we all a bit narcissistic as a teen? Her obsession with Lizzie was even somewhat believable-as an outsider I remember obsessing about the popular kids & why they seemed to charmed while I felt alone & isolated. But it is just taken to such extremes, I couldn‘t quite buy into it. #blr2017

Redjewel_7734 Also I just couldn‘t buy into the concerned parents who also were ok with many obvious concerning things. There‘s potential in this story, but it doesn‘t quite live up to it. 6y

Day 9: question...

5. Do you agree with Emily‘s decision to take a break from Hawthorn? Was she being a good or bad friend by doing so?

Friends discuss!

Pamwurtzler I felt like she was doing what she needed to do to preserve their friendship. I felt like Hawthorn was wearing on Emily's nerves with her fixation and Emily needed a break. 6y
CrowCAH @Pamwurtzler doesn‘t sound like Hawthorn was being herself, if she was trying to save a friendship that was dying. 6y

Like Hawthorn, this book is very imaginative and yet a little quirky. The book is about Hawthorn, and yet the title, The 100 Lies of Lizzie Lovett might lead you to believe something else. Not until you step back after finishing the book do you really get the reason for the title. See my review. https://lharvey250.tumblr.com/post/156144554554/the-hundred-lies-of-lizzie-lovet...

Day 8: question...

4. What gives people like Mychelle so much power? Is the bullying Hawthorn faces a product of her own actions? Is there something she could or should have done to prevent it?

Now it‘s your turn to talk!

Pamwurtzler I think it‘s the typical case of having to put others down to feel better about herself. Hawthorn is especially susceptible to being bullied - she doesn‘t have many friends anyway. 6y
CrowCAH @Pamwurtzler haven‘t read the book, but I can identify with the first sentiment, it‘s basically gossip. 6y

I wanted to try one of the #biglibraryreads choices so I went with this. It was between a "Pick" & a "So-So." The main character, Hawthorne, was self-absorbed, but learning about herself in the process. The ending was satifying.
