Wow wow wow. What an excellent book. So very sad, but Westover‘s ability to escape it all was so inspiring. A must read if you liked The Glass Castle.

I loved this one! I‘m so happy for the author for finding her own voice! I found it relatable as I grew up in a relatively small and conservative town within a religious family. When I left home for the military, I also felt like I was a step behind others and had to become ‘Educated‘ in a lot of ways—outside a classroom. …And now, thankfully, inside one too!

Definitely recommend!

I really hope I‘m not wrong in thinking this book, which has been on my TBR list since it‘s release, is one of the required textbooks for the College Composition course I‘ll be taking in the fall.
This also happened in my first college level English class, in which The Glass Castle was our textbook. I had already read it at that point and was not at all upset about reading it for a second time and getting to discuss it in class. 🤓📚❤️

Ok, Probably an unpopular opinion but I've decided to bail on this one. The writing is slow and I've found myself rereading Passages because her writing style is confusing to me. Half way thru it and just not liking it at all. The picture is of My finch so if anyone has the app you will understand why he's so cute. My code is L8Z2HEL3VX is interested in being my neighbor

This is a prime struggle that Tara has throughout this book. It is interesting to see how she chooses to grow, abs if she will choose to make herself happy, or to make everyone else happy out of obligation.

I've actually been reading physical books and visiting libraries. I'm literally only 25 pages into the book, but so far I'd give it ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️. The only time I highlight books is if I'm using my Kindle or if I'm reading an academic book where I'm taking notes. @MoonWitch94

This book made me sad. The way that she thinks at the beginning of this memoir is so depressing; it's as if she is seeing everything through a muddled, controlling filter. Once we start to see the veil ripped off, she realizes that it was always just her controlled mind holding her back from really thinking for herself.

Nope. Admittedly, memoirs are not something I often enjoy and rarely pick up on my own. This is a work book club pick. Since I lead book club, I have never bailed on a book no matter how much I hated it until now. I tried not to be judgmental about the father‘s lunatic anti-government, Illuminati conspiracy theories, but I cannot read any more of the abuse of the kids. At 21% of the audiobook, I‘m out.

KristiAhlers Yeah it was a tough read. Not one you‘d say “I totally enjoyed” as the subject matter was so awful. I guess I stuck it out thinking if she could survive it and write about it. I can read it. But totally get where you‘re coming from. 6mo
GingerAntics Yeah, the father in this one is a real trip. The end where she escapes and goes to college and ends up being really smart and everything is good. Maybe she should have lead with a little bit of that. The whole Rhode‘s Scholar thing is pretty good. Maybe just skip ahead to that bit. (edited) 6mo

That was hard to read. She dealt with so much physical and emotional abuse from her family of mentally unstable Mormons. It was so frustrating every time she went back to them even after she was trying to break away and get college education. Thank goodness she FINALLY did.

brittanybooks @MK_Liddiard the author describes her childhood and her family‘s fundamentalist beliefs. Beyond the religious beliefs are some entrenched family patterns, mental illness, violence, and gaslighting. She is “homeschooled” but essentially stops learning after basic math and reading. She goes to college and her experiences with education and family evolve from there. Well worth the read! 7mo

I started this book in HI during vacation and quickly picked it back up after the holiday frenzy ended. I‘m loving it so far! The past few days I‘ve devoured so much of it that I‘m tempted to pause just to savor it before I finish.

It‘s been SO nice to have time to pause and enjoy myself these past few weeks. Tonight my mom returns to stay with us for another several weeks and I‘d be lying if I said I‘m not already mourning the absence of calm.

I found Educated to be a breathtaking read, in more ways than one. The dangers and horrors of Westover‘s childhood had my heart in my throat – but the moments of love and compassion shared within this bizarre family did, too. I was captivated by the way Westover was able to relate her story, with frankness and fairness. Full review: https://keepingupwiththepenguins.com/educated-tara-westover/

Good and hard book to read. I felt there were many parallels to my own life and childhood. Not many of the same details but so many parallels. Hard personally for me to read then but there was much to learn and be encouraged by too. Thankful that she shared her story. Thankful for her courage and journey.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Raised Mormon there was a lot I could appreciate and relate to different aspects about this book. Not all mormons are fanatics in fact very few, but within every community there are always the individuals unique beyond others. Another interesting look into someone‘s upbringing and how she turns things around for herself. Survivalist.

‘The paradox of education is precisely this - that as one begins to become conscious one begins to examine the society in which he is being educated.‘ - James Baldwin

Santie Although I found myself thinking of this quote by James Baldwin, it would be utterly unfair to say that it truly represents the essence of this book. Tara was raised by parents whose piety verged on perverseness. She suffered mentally and physically at the hands of her family. She knew no other lens of seeing the world besides her father‘s, which came in shard‘s because he has an undiagnosed mental illness. But Tara could not know that - 11mo
Santie Because her father did not believe in science. Believing God to be the only healer, her father did not believe in the ‘medical establishment‘. Neither did he believe in formal education. He thought them means for the government to rule over people and turn them against God. (edited) 11mo
Santie My biggest take-home from this book is how much the people who raise us affect us, how automatic that process is, that there are a hundred things we learned passively and aren‘t even aware of, and that once we are aware of it, it would be very hard to change. 11mo

I was having a hard time with my current nonfiction read so I decided to switch gears with this book that I had bought on Kindle well over a year ago and had never gotten around to reading. I stayed up late and finished it this morning; it was a wild ride. Having grown up in Idaho, I felt a sort of kinship and investment. I have many thoughts, but here are two. 1. Trauma and abuse can really seem so normal to the ones experiencing it. ⬇️

SamanthaMarie 2. It begs the question, are some people unfit to be parents? But how can you tell? Who should intervene? When? To what end? 11mo

Wow. What an amazing story of overcoming the fundamentalist mormon family she was born into. Maybe escape is a better word. Mental and physical abuse, and a lack of education were at the heart of the story. It was frustrating in parts because we can see what she could not at specific times. It hit a little close to home for me. Even though you may escape toxic family members, it doesn't mean you don't still miss them at times. Highly recommend.
