Thank you for hosting this #giveaway and #NewYearWhoDis @monalyisha ! I really enjoyed getting to see what my match‘s picks were and getting to share mine as well. I didn‘t get to read as many as I would have liked (Darn you reading funk!), but I‘m glad I read the two that I did, and I‘ve added several others to my TBR that I‘ll hopefully get to throughout the year. Tagged is my favorite so far.

(I‘ve read The House on Mango Street and Sadie.)

O finished this on the plan yesterday and keep thinking about it.
I feel such a mixture of frustration and anger and sadness. Then a complete lack.of understanding. Then huge amounts of hope and pride in how much she gained and how far she's come.
A really unsettling memoir which has taught me more.

Kudos to Tara Westover for going from no formal education to college and a PhD and for her ability to find herself after a childhood existing in an almost cult like atmosphere. I know from personal experience that distancing oneself from family toxicity is not as easy feat.
"What is a person to do, I asked, when their obligations to their family conflict with other obligations - to friends, to society, to themselves?"

I only finished three books this month, and two of them were pretty short, but with how stressful this month was, I‘m still counting that as a win. I‘d hoped to finish The Fifth Season along with Educated and Grief is the Thing with Feathers for #NewYearWhoDis this month, but I fell into a bit of a reading slump, so I‘ve temporarily put it aside. Hopefully I‘ll finish it in February. 🤞🏽

#ReadWithMrBook #OneWordTitle

Educated is the book I picked for January‘s prompt, but when I looked at my list, I realized one word titles were a popular reading choice for me this month!

MissAimz_55 I picked educated but I have internment on my list too 3w
MissAimz_55 I thought of March but wondered if it was a 1 word title BC it says book one 3w

2nd book in #24B4Monday & part of #ReadwithMrBook @MrBook I saw book from a mental health perspective.Experiences go beyond a religion since her father apparently suffers from mental health illness. How strong cognitive schema leads how we perceive, process & evaluate events? Author was brave to share with us her experiences.3rd part was so emotional, you need a support to go on.Beautiful book.Areas I didn't like were more related with editing4.5⭐️

Gissy Thank you @BookNAround for this wonderful book. I started this book like 2 weeks ago but only read like 60 pages or less but on Sunday I took it again and I couldn't leave it until I finished it. It could be so hard to heal from Emotional trauma. Every member of her family coped in a different way. How wonderful was that 3rd part when she found someone who believed in her, who gave support! 3w

With little back knowledge other than everyone was reading it, this title dominated the last few days of my reading. I've always been fascinated by feral children and the characteristics they exhibit but never paid much attention to how parents can ostersize their own children from the world. How does a parent not know their child's birthday nor see the harm? This book deserves all the accolades and prestige on best seller charts.

⭐️⭐️💫 #unpopularopinion - I did not love this book. If it hadn‘t been a book club read, I never would have finished it. It is perversely fascinating to read about someone‘s life of violence, abuse, & neglect, but I will never enjoy reading about child abuse. I also thought this book read more like sections written for a memoir writing class than a full book, so to me that was an odd style choice. Overall this is not one I‘d recommend.

I cried for most of the second half. Boy, what a ride. Tara was raised in a Mormon household but an extremist household. No doctors, no school, fears about the government and Illuminati. This is about how she decided to get an education and what that meant for her family.

A lot of parts where I was angry, but a lot just broke my heart. This was really an excellent read and I am glad I finally got to it.

Tara's experiences made me think more deeply about how we experience/view the world and how our perceptions are shaped by our environments. This book felt like a private exhibition of mourning and release. It was definitely intense. I am sure her story will stick with me for some time.

I had put off reading this earlier because I thought it would be too much like The Glass Castle. However, I think what is most striking (for me) about Tara's memoir is that her lifeline runs almost parallel to mine. While I was ringing in the new millennium with my high school boyfriend, she was hunkered down waiting for the end of the world with her father. Our youths could not have been any more different even in this modern world.

I enjoyed this book, once I controlled my anger at the author's survivalist parents who tried to make her succumb to their narrow world view. Ultimately, this book celebrates the power of education and you end up feeling proud of the author and her drive to educate herself out of her prison-like family situation.

The life the author finds is not the life she should have lived. The fact she gets where she does is due to her incredible strength. This book covers identity, Mormonism, abuse, survivalism, family, feminism, homeopathy and, of course, education. A memoir that reads like page turning fiction. The line “You were my child. I should have protected you” just about broke my heart. Brilliant.

Book club book for January. Second read so I listened to it. Got so much more out of it. The idea of being a vessel for others‘ ideology vs developing the skill of considered understanding of self. A messy messy teeter totter of guilt, compassion, loyalty and intelligence. #jumpstart2020

I finished my first book from @MeganAnn ‘s #newyearwhodis list, and it was a great read!

A memoir that touches on the importance of education, and one woman‘s struggle to find her own place in the world apart from her upbringing. Her parents attack public schools, the healthcare system, and government services, but at its core this is a book about abuse, and the way abusers and their enablers distort reality towards their victims.

4thhouseontheleft And the list of challenge prompts begins 😂#ReadwithMrBook #onewordtitle @MrBook, #nonfiction2020 #abouteducation @Riveted_Reader_Melissa, #ReadtheUSA2020 #Idaho. Also #mandmchallenge2020 #home @barbarathebibliophage because Tara's relationship with her home (leaving and returning to it) and Buck's Peak, is a central component of her memoir. And finally, #pop20 : Won an award in 2019 (GR Choice Award). 1mo

This gives major flashbacks to how my dad responded to Y2K (he was a software consultant, it kinda turned out to be the beginning of the end of his career due to his own paranoia).

We stockpiled food and gas masks (thankfully, not guns), were forbidden from leaving the house, and I was banned from the study abroad trip I got accepted into (I ended up going the following semester).

I was 20, home from college. I snuck out to go to a NYE party. 🤣

marleed That‘s interesting. I was an app developer during Y2K. In 1999 one guy‘s job for the entire year was to stay atop Y2K concerns. It‘s the only year I remember people being on-call in case something unanticipated happened as midnight rolled in. For me, the only real impact was program changes needed to account for a 4 vs 2 position year for math equations. 1mo
4thhouseontheleft @marleed @typhlax My dad lost most of his business contracts after Y2K, it was a rough period. And then he moved on from Y2K paranoia to racist 9/11 paranoia. 🙄😠 1mo
marleed Wow! Educated must be full of triggers for you. I‘m so happy you‘ve become the woman/mother you are despite the way in which you were raised. 1mo
4thhouseontheleft @marleed my family was never this extreme, thankfully. I maintain a semi-relationship with my parents which is helped by not living anywhere near each other. ☺️ 1mo
marleed Oh, it‘s nice that you maintain a relationship - and some distance. 1mo
Butterfinger I will always remember my grandmother stockpiling toilet paper for Y2K. We filled our pantry with dried beans, but Granny was so afraid of running out of tp. 😂 1mo
MeganAnn How interesting!! I vaguely remember people talking about Y2K, but we didn‘t worry too much about it. I think my parents were pretty sure it was going to be just fine. I would‘ve been 14 at the time so I don‘t think I really thought about it too hard. 1mo

I read this with my husband and we have been talking about moments, people, and themes from this book for the past couple weeks. Fascinating memoir of the narrator's journey from an unschooled, fundamentalist childhood in rural Idaho to becoming a PhD from Cambridge. She explores what it's like to leave home and how foundational beliefs can change with time and distance. Though I started in December, this was my first book completed in 2020.
