Some Girls: My Life in a Harem | Jillian Lauren
11 posts | 16 read | 1 reading | 8 to read
A jaw-dropping story of how a girl from the suburbs ends up in a prince's harem, and emerges from the secret Xanadu both richer and wiser At eighteen, Jillian Lauren was an NYU theater school dropout with a tip about an upcoming audition. The "casting director" told her that a rich businessman in Singapore would pay pretty American girls $20,000 if they stayed for two weeks to spice up his parties. Soon, Jillian was on a plane to Borneo, where she would spend the next eighteen months in the harem of Prince Jefri Bolkiah, youngest brother of the Sultan of Brunei, leaving behind her gritty East Village apartment for a palace with rugs laced with gold and trading her band of artist friends for a coterie of backstabbing beauties. More than just a sexy read set in an exotic land, Some Girls is also the story of how a rebellious teen found herself-and the courage to meet her birth mother and eventually adopt a baby boy.

When I travel I like to read something about where I‘m going, something that is not a travel guide. I enjoyed the authors writing style and context of her experiences as a sex worker for the prince of Brunei. It was good/ok.... but Probably not a book I would recommend to most.

Although this is my pick for #Brunei I didn‘t learn anything about that country, except that Brunei is absolute monarchy under the sovereign rule of sultan who have two brothers, and one of them - Prince Jefri like to collect the girls from all around the world in his personal harem. I appreciated that J.Lauren doesn't make excuses for her decisions, and that is also my reason for pick. #ReadingAsia2021

Librarybelle Great review! I have this lined up for #Brunei too! 3y
Simona Thank you @Librarybelle It‘s, in some way, fun book to read, and actually the only book set in Brunei that I found. 3y
Reggie There‘s is an E True Hollywood story about the Sultan of Brunei and it was wild to hear about all the girls, jewelry, and crazy mind games that were played. 3y
Simona @reggie When I finished the book I fell in the google rabbit hole and it‘s hard to understand so excessive life style ... but I guess that the combination of the money and boredom can be tricky 🤷🏻‍♀️ 3y

A fascinating memoir written by a young woman who was in Prince Jeffri of Brunei‘s harem. Some things you‘d expect, luxurious gifts and even the constant surveillance of the women, but other things, like having to call him the code name Robin, were even weirder. And all the politicking among the women...just so many women from so many countries!! And boy was “Robin” manipulative in pitting them against each. A juicy memoir with a happy ending!

Megabooks Is Litsy acting weird for anyone else? 3y
Librarybelle I‘m anxious to read this one! 3y

Megabooks @Librarybelle Enjoy! It‘s nice and juicy! 3y
squirrelbrain Glad you enjoyed it! 3y
squirrelbrain Litsy seems OK to me Meg but it‘s a long time since you asked the question....6am here so maybe it was being naughty in our night-time and now it‘s behaving again! 😁 3y
Megabooks @squirrelbrain Thanks! It was acting up for me yesterday afternoon my time, so right as you were going to bed. It didn‘t want to show this post and deleted another. Just really weird. It seems to be better now though. 👍🏻 3y
squirrelbrain Litsy does have its ‘moments‘ doesn‘t it?! 🤪 3y
Megabooks @squirrelbrain True true!! 3y
Cinfhen I wasn‘t getting ANY notifications and couldn‘t comment last night but this morning seems ok. Weirdly our whole conversation about Maisy is not in my notifications🤷🏼‍♀️ 3y
Cinfhen I‘m glad you enjoyed this book!! It was an interesting way to learn about Brunei 😊 3y
Megabooks @Cinfhen that got deleted! So weird! I‘m just too lazy to repost. I‘m having to read my comments in my browser. It‘s been that way for a couple of weeks. I‘m concerned about the future of litsy. 😬 and yes, very interesting way to learn about Brunei! 3y
Cinfhen I know....the future of the app is feeling pretty dire. I‘ve been told since LibraryThing acquired Litsy they‘ve done ZERO upgrades on the system. 😢☹️😞 3y
Megabooks @Cinfhen I really don‘t want this app to die! 😢 3y
Cinfhen Maybe we can buy it and run the app with a bunch of other Littens - it can‘t be that much $$ 😜although my knowledge of all things high tech Is ZIP 🙈 3y
Centique @Cinfhen let‘s have a plan that if it goes we all reconvene on Instagram as a fall back and use some pre-decided tag to find each other‘s posts. 🤞🤞like #litsyreunion or something. There is a GR group too that no one really uses unless Litsy goes down. 3y
Megabooks @Centique @Cinfhen we‘ll have to think of something. I‘m on Instagram, but I don‘t enjoy it nearly as much as litsy. ☹️ 3y

I get why some people might not care for author Jillian Lauren, but I found her story both tantalizing and compelling. She definitely made some dubious decisions in her youth, but I‘m not here to judge her. I‘m here to listen to her story and get a glimpse into a world I would never have access too. I thought her writing and style was breezy, light and easy to listen too.
This was my choice for #ReadingAsia21 #Brunei

squirrelbrain Great review! 😁👍 3y
Cinfhen I was intrigued from the very first page @squirrelbrain / audio read by Jillian really worked for me 3y

#ReadingAsia21 #Hoopla #Brunei 🇧🇳 Just started and I‘m hooked 🎧 another book choice for #Booked2021 #JewishAuthor I can already tell author Jillian Lauren is going to polarize readers, but I like her.

BarbaraBB Sounds good. You had another tough night? I hope things will calm down soon 🤞🏽💚 3y

Cinfhen I‘m loving it @Librarybelle it‘s such a CRAZY story!! I‘m enjoying listening to Jillian narrate the audio 3y
Lizpixie Just coincidentally, last night I watched a documentary on Stan(like Aussie Netflix)about this authors relationship with Americas most prolific serial killer Sam Little while she‘s writing a true crime about his life & exploits. It‘s very twisted & hard to watch honestly.🙈 3y
Cortg Thinking of you! Stay safe and keep posting so we know you‘re ok! ❤️ 3y
Cinfhen Wow!! That‘s nuts @Lizpixie this author is quite the character/ she‘s lead a pretty notorious life😜 3y
Cinfhen Thank you @Cortg I hope I have brighter news to share in the days to come 💕🙏🏼 3y
Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻 thinking of you ❤️ 3y
Cinfhen Thanks so much, Misty!!! It‘s been a little rough but somehow you just keep living like it‘s just a another normal day @Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks 3y
squirrelbrain It felt to me that these girls” lives were rather empty and sad, but I can imagine how it might come across differently in the author‘s own voice. @Librarybelle Thinking of you Cindy, hope you‘re doing OK. 😘 3y
Cinfhen It‘s been quiet last 24 hours for me personally @squirrelbrain but unfortunately the situation is really volatile 😔it‘s not looking good for any resolutions any time soon 3y

The author gets a tip-off about a rich businessman in Singapore paying $20,000 for girls to party for 2 weeks and ends up as part of a harem in #Brunei in the early 90s.

I found this fascinating, even though it was incredibly seedy. (The author is in her late teens and essentially becomes a sex worker)

@Librarybelle - did you want to read this one? I can send it to you if you wish.

#readingasia21

Caroline2 Hmm, sounds interesting. 🧐 3y
Librarybelle That would be lovely! I believe I have your email address, so I‘ll send you an email! Thank you! 3y

I ordered this (used) book way before Christmas so I‘d completely forgotten about it by the time it arrived today. I‘m not surprised it took so long though - it came from America by way of France. 🤔

It‘s an ex-library book from Lake Tahoe Community College - I love it when my books have history!

This is for #readingasia2021 #brunei and is NF about an American girl in a harem - should be interesting! Another of my random finds Barbara! 🤪

Caroline2 Ohhh this does sound interesting. 😯 3y
BarbaraBB Another one. Very cool! You have already discovered some real gems this way! 3y
Librarybelle I‘m very interested! 3y
squirrelbrain I‘ll let you know how I get on @Librarybelle - it gets mixed reviews.... If it‘s any good I can always send it you #swapme 😘 3y
Librarybelle I look forward to your thoughts! 😁 3y

Mehso-so

I wanted to love this book. But, I found most of her writing very melodramatic. This is the story of how she got into sex work and the impact her parents, drugs and self esteem played in that. Yet, the amount of metaphors and similes. Every time I hit a simile, I would jump up and scream ANOTHER ONE! It felt like it was trying too hard. Also, this got sold to me as: how this woman escaped a harem. But she went and left at will, sooo...

BestOfFates Haha, yeah, more of just a Hugh Hefner situation but sold with "exoticism" as the draw! 7y
Notafraidofwords @BestOfFates how did you know? 7y
BestOfFates @Notafraidofwords Oh, I studied Arabic & Middle Eastern studies for many years so I'm vaguely familiar with most of the popular American books on the subject! 7y
Notafraidofwords @BestOfFates that's exactly this book! 7y
