Love & Friendship: In Which Jane Austen's Lady Susan Vernon Is Entirely Vindicated
Love & Friendship: In Which Jane Austen's Lady Susan Vernon Is Entirely Vindicated | Whit Stillman
11 posts | 4 read | 18 to read
Jane Austen's funniest novel is also her least known--until now. Impossibly beautiful, disarmingly witty, and completely self-absorbed: Meet Lady Susan Vernon, both the heart and the thorn of "Love" "& Friendship." Recently widowed, with a daughter who's coming of age as quickly as their funds are dwindling, Lady Susan makes it her mission to find them wealthy husbands--and fast. But when her attempts to secure their futures result only in the wrath of a prominent conquest's wife and the title of "most accomplished coquette in England," Lady Susan must rethink her strategy. Unannounced, she arrives at her brother-in-law's country estate. Here she intends to take refuge--in no less than luxury, of course--from the colorful rumors trailing her, while finding another avenue to "I do." Before the scandalizing gossip can run its course, though, romantic triangles ensue. With a pitch-perfect Austenian sensibility and wry social commentary, filmmaker and writer Whit Stillman cleverly reimagines and completes one of our greatest writers' unfinished works. As much homage to its muse's perennial influence as testament to its author's brilliance, "Love & Friendship "is a sharp comedy of manners, and a fiendishly funny treat for Austen and Stillman fans alike.

I sometimes wonder when I pick a read like this - why do I engage in such vanity - however I should say the language , the phrases , the etiquettes, the lady like behaviours which are so uncommon these days - they indulge me .. and may I admit I am enjoying the quick read !

Awwwwww 😍😍😍 @cobwebmoth what a gorgeous parcel 😍😘 I love everything. The cute little bag, the owl stickers, the tea, the colouring book, the book and the reflective bookmark.. 😍 (how could you know, the picture is hanging at my wall???) I love this picture.

It seems like you haven't received your parcel yet. 😪😪 Since July 7th it is still at the duty. Do you want to have the tracking number, maybe you get to know more?

Sarah83 @cobwebmoth this is the German one: RR705389697DE I am pretty nervous, because one of the last parcels I sent got lost. 😫😪 6y
cobwebmoth I just checked, and the postal service says that it left New York yesterday and is in transit between there and here, so it should just be a couple more days. 6y

I‘m very glad to have found a paperback copy. Whit Stillman was discouraging his Twitter followers from buying the ebook versions because they don‘t display footnotes on the same page, which spoils the jokes. I‘ll be reading this soon.

readinginthedark I heard that people had finished Austen's Lady Susan but haven't read any of the finished works or seen the movie. It looks like this version is the same story as the movie version, though! I've read the original and really enjoyed it; curious to see what the movie's like! 7y
Weaponxgirl The film was good! I haven't read the book but the film had a biting sense of humour through it. 7y
DebinHawaii I read the book (Lady Susan) a few years ago and wasn't wowed but I saw the movie several weeks ago and really liked it so I think I am going to go back and reread it and/or maybe this one as I am not sure what all is different. 😆 7y
LeahBergen I find this title (and the movie title) so weird. This book and the movie are based on a finished epistolary novel of Austen's called Lady Susan (why does this description say Stillman finished it?) Sanditon and The Watsons are Austen's two unfinished novels and she wrote a completely different piece of juvenalia called Love and Friendship. Why switch Austen's title?! (my dorky Jane rant of the day. 😂 Loved the movie, though!) 7y
CocoReads I enjoyed the movie, as I do with all Austen books made into movies. I confess, I've only tried to read P&P and could not get into it. However, I adore epistolary novels so I may give Lady Susan a go 7y
Eugeniavb I didn't really care for the movie all that much. It was just ok for me! I thought I would like it since I'm usually an Austen fan, but there just seemed to be something missing. 7y
SaraFair The film uses the old English and vocabulary of the book. It was hard to follow in Lady Susan ( which was an epistolary) but so much easier seeing the characters speak it. I liked the film for the period piece it was. 7y
moranadatter @LeahBergen That bugs me too. What was wrong with calling it Lady Susan? 7y

"What an irony that our supreme ironist Jane Austen has been so badly misunderstood. So thank heaven for Whit Stillman and his reworking of Austen's novella, LADY SUSAN. If you like your Austen subversive, cruel, funny and outrageous, then you will love LOVE & FRIENDSHIP." -The Times of London

Mehso-so

Whit Stillman's retelling is a fun concept, kind of a satire of an already satirical narrative, and it is cleverly done but at the end of the day I'd much rather read the original.

Just saw this movie for the second time, read Lady Susan, and am now starting this version.

SusanInTiburon I saw the movie twice and read Lady Susan too! 8y
rubyslippersreads I think this would only be (mildly) interesting to someone who has seen the movie. Skip this and save your money for the DVD. 😏 8y
