The Senator Next Door
The Senator Next Door: A Memoir from the Heartland | Amy Klobuchar
4 posts | 4 read | 1 to read
One of the U.S. Senate's most candid--and funniest--women tells the story of her life and her unshakeable faith in our democracy Minnesota Senator Amy Klobuchar has tackled every obstacle she's encountered--her parents' divorce, her father's alcoholism and recovery, her political campaigns and Washington's gridlock--with honesty, humor and pluck. Now, in The Senator Next Door, she chronicles her remarkable heartland journey, from her immigrant grandparents to her middle-class suburban upbringing to her rise in American politics. After being kicked out of the hospital while her infant daughter was still in intensive care, Klobuchar became the lead advocate for one of the first laws in the country guaranteeing new moms and their babies a 48-hour hospital stay. Later she ran Minnesota's biggest prosecutor's office and in 2006 was the first woman elected to the U.S. Senate from her state. Along the way she fashioned her own political philosophy grounded in her belief that partisan flame-throwing takes no courage at all; what really matters is forging alliances with unlikely partners to solve the nation's problems. Optimistic, plainspoken and often very funny, The Senator Next Door is a story about how the girl next door decided to enter the fray and make a difference. At a moment when America's government often seems incapable of getting anything done, Amy Klobuchar proves that politics is still the art of the possible.

Too much memoir and nice-nice bipartisan talk; not enough policy. It's not bad; it's perfectly fine. She's possibly the least charismatic/interesting politician I've read so far. Obviously, I won't disqualify her from consideration; she's just not at the top of my list *based on this book*. [I'll do more research on her if she's still in contention come voting time.] Apropos of nothing, I always enjoy a mention of one of my ex-boyfriends.

This book was a bit disappointing< i thought I would come away with a understanding of what Amy Klobuchar policy focus was. Instead I came away knowing more about her journey to the senate, which seems okay but didn't give me a good understanding of what she is passionate about and what is informing her decisions, as she runs for president. Maybe a decent book for people who don't care about her presidential ambitions.

Starting listening to this book, its not bad but i was hoping for more of an understanding of her policies. I am a little disappointed that she hasnt focused on that as much.

Anyway! #BookFitnessChallenge #BFC19 #BookNerdHerd

This was a decent political memoir for #readthecandidates Klobuchar is definitely a successful senator. She wrote this book before Trump, and spends a lot of time talking about bipartisanship and compromise and seems to take pretty moderate positions on a lot of things. A lot of the bills she started seemed to be on common sense things that would obviously garner bipartisan support. I wonder if she would be less bipartisan now.

Tamra She still seems primarily center left. She‘s been great for MN, very level headed & practical. 5y
krayoncolorz I met her when she came to Nashville. I think she would do really well in the South. She‘s very pragmatic. 5y
