Firework Maker's Daughter
Firework Maker's Daughter | Philip Pullman
8 posts | 14 read | 5 to read
Lila dreams to become a firework-maker, just like her father. In order to become a true firework-maker, she sets off alone on a perilous journey to reach the terrifying Fire-Fiend. She travels through jungles alive with crocodiles, snakes, monkeys and pirates, and climbs up the scolding volcano. On finding the Fire-Fiend, she realises more is at stake than she ever imagined. Will Lila survive? Lilas is the kind of magical adventure that all children dream of and the gripping story of the fleet-footed heroine will livelong in the memory of anyone who enters her world. Adapted for the stage in a colourful and musical manner. Catchy tunes, impressive costumes and subtle yet effective special effects make for a fun family day out and highlights include the stunning costume of talking white elephant Hamlet and the beautifully crafted puppets used to help tell the tale. - The Stage

Smashed through this short audiobook at work today - think I zoned out for a bit in the middle because I could not tell you how she got back down the mountain (volcano?) but I had a good time - I enjoyed the accidental pirates and the lush descriptions of the fireworks displays.

Such a wonderful short story by Phillip Pullman, loved his writing in this we were completely drawn in.
Lila is daughter to firework maker Lalchand, she dreams of following in her fathers footsteps but stereotypically Lila is expected to get a husband. Lila is determined&sets of on a dangerous journey alone in search of the final firework- making secret but her father hasn‘t prepared her for what‘s to come.
Beautiful ending ,highly recommend 🎇🎆

Balibee146 Always good to know you recommend a book @Cinfhen I've Nit read the original Dracula (how??!!) but this is an interesting riff on the myths 👍👍 4y
Cinfhen I‘m reading Bram Strokers Dracula/ don‘t know if it‘s any different than your version??? 4y
Balibee146 Hi @cinfen yes it's a different book... Co written by a descendant of Stoker who keeps the family archive and another writer. It is written from the perspective of Bram Stoker... I'm not very far in but looks like his nanny is a vampire and has used vampire ways to save him when he was stillborn... Its intriguing so far! 4y

Lila wants to be a firework-maker like her dad. He says she can't because she is a girl. She's determined so she runs away to do the last step on this path with a little help from a friend who is a caretaker for a white elephant. There is a rough road ahead, but not without humor.
