Mark Z. Danielewski's The Whalestoe Letters
Mark Z. Danielewski's The Whalestoe Letters | Mark Z. Danielewski, Pelafina Ličvre
10 posts | 17 read | 18 to read
Between 1982 and 1989, Pelafina H. Ličvre sent her son, Johnny Truant, a series of letters from The Three Attic Whalestoe Institute, a psychiatric facility in Ohio where she spent the final years of her life. Beautiful, heartfelt, and tragic, this correspondence reveals the powerful and deeply moving relationship between a brilliant though mentally ill mother and the precocious, gifted young son she never ceases to love. Originally contained within the monumental House of Leaves, this collection stands alone as a stunning portrait of mother and child. It is presented here along with a foreword by Walden D. Wyhrta and eleven previously unavailable letters.

It is time to go deeper. Answer your mail from Mommy.

Working on my fourth episode in my podcast‘s series on House of Leaves. Now we enter the Five and a Half Minute Hallway with the explorers, and we are instructed by the Editor to pause and read Johnny‘s mother‘s letters from the asylum. This is the full collection, with 11 extra letters added by the asylum‘s Information Specialist. Mommy is needy. Mommy loves only Johnny. #podcast

Decided to give this a go since I couldn't get through House of Leaves my first attempt to read it. I enjoyed it, and while it definitely reads a little like an appendix of the larger works it's taken from, it is an interesting snippet of story of itself, and gets me interested in attempting the main work again.

I have not yet had the capacity or focus to read all of House of Leaves. I was really excited to find this collection/excerpt of letters from House of Leaves, giving me the opportunity to ease my way into the greater novel. This collection is full of all the emotions and has completely captivated me! Would definitely recommend. But keep in mind, it's not a novella or short story, it's a collection of letters.

Trying to decipher the code of a crazy (?) woman makes you look a bit crazy yourself. If my boyfriend finds these notes, without context he'll definitely think I've gone mad.

Important question: should I read this before or after my #houseofleaves re-read for MZD‘s book club? Or during? Things that keep you up at night...

OSChamberlain I definitely recommend before. It makes Johnny‘s rambling Soliloquies make so much more sense. 6y

This was difficult so I tried to not overthink it!
In no particular order: Mark Z. Danielewski, Karin Slaughter, Jonathan Safran Foer, Siri Hustvedt, Orhan Pamuk, Haruki Murakami, Lauren Groff, Rebecca Solnit, Joan Didion, Richard Russo

BarbaraBB Ha! 🙌 6y
Billypar Nice choices! I need to get around to Richard Russo one of these days. For Rebecca Solnit, would you recommend starting with any particular work of hers? 6y
bookloo Murakami. 😍 I love this list. Thank you for the tag. 6y
IamIamIam I LOVE Richard Russo!!! 6y
Cathythoughts Just began my first Karin Slaughter, great to see her affirmed here again 6y
mrozzz @Billypar yes definitely read Nobody's Fool (Russo)!! And with Solnit it depends... I was ecstatic to read her feminist essays and started with Men Explain Things to Me which was cringeworthy how on point it was... but she also has these amazing map books Nonstop Metropolis on NYC and SF and (I think) New Orleans FULL of maps and essays on different subjects or events relative to the cities 6y
mrozzz @bookloo 😊 had to include Murakami. Have fun with your own! 6y
mrozzz @IamIamIam SULLY 💜💕💗☺️ 6y
mrozzz @Cathythoughts yes!!! I'm very critical of the writing styles of mystery/crime books (because I think that an overly introspective narrator drags down the story-thus I was not a fan of Kubica) but Slaughter is without compare. She makes it look easy weaving witticisms through heart racing events and creating a damn good thriller. 6y
Billypar @mrozzz I had wanted to read Men Explain.. but hadn't heard of Nonstop Metropolis books- thanks for the recc! I've been wanting to try something about NYC history and progress to how neighborhoods are now. 6y
mrozzz What serendipity!!! @Billypar it will be perfect for you. 👍🏻 6y

House of Leaves is possibly my favorite book and receiving this as a gift from my mother made everything seem a bit better. I've read most of it already and it's very...frantic? A lot of words can describe this book but the point is I LOVE IT ✨✨✨✨

The companion to my longtime favorite, House of Leaves. Most of the contents of this book are *in* House of Leaves, so I've had this one on lower priority for a long time, but there are new contents, as well, and I am finally getting around to seeing what they are. 💙 #Pelafina #JohnnyTruant #HouseofLeaves
