Dunwich Horror
Dunwich Horror | H P Lovecraft
8 posts | 17 read | 8 to read
Horror lies in the old, decrepit New England town of Dunwich. Outsiders visit Dunwich as seldom as possible, and since a certain season of horror all the signboards pointing towards it have been taken down. The scenery, judged by an ordinary aesthetic canon, is more than commonly beautiful; yet there is no influx of artists or summer tourists. Two centuries ago, when talk of witch-blood, Satan-worship, and strange forest presences was not laughed at, it was the custom to give reasons for avoiding the locality. Still, even today, not all is as it seems in Dunwich, an evil magic and rumors of the Old Ones still cling to the countryside. Lovecraft is at his very best in this Cthulhu Mythos tale.

You guys! How did I just discover #serialreader ???? Pretty much the coolest app ever! I must be dense because there are plenty of posts about it here on Litsy. Just in case you don't know about it yet. It's a super cool free app that gives you classics books in daily bite sized bits!

For all you serial reader users how many books do you have going at a time?

Sophoclessweetheart The Dunwich Horror 👌🏻🖤 6y
Daisey I usually only have one Serial Reader book at a time along with several other books in formats. 6y
Crazeedi Thanks, I've never heard of it, I guess I'm app-challenged 🙄 6y

2BR02B I read Wuthering Heights on it. I've been struggling to read that book for years, and getting daily segments I could read in fifteen minutes over morning coffee was super helpful. 6y
ErickaS_Flyleafunfurled I read War and Peace on this app!! Took 7 months 😂 6y
knittedgnome @Daisey that's what is probably ideal. I do have a couple paper books plus Kindle ones. 6y
knittedgnome @Crazeedi haha! Me too! I'm always way late on things like this! 6y
knittedgnome @2BR02B it's way more manageable! 6y
knittedgnome @ErickaS_Flyleafunfurled but you did it!! That's what I'm loving about this! 6y
ErickaS_Flyleafunfurled I love this app! Currently reading Three Men in a Boat! 👍 Ive read a few on here already. I especially like the pop-up praise of “Huzzah!” when I finish an installment. 😄 6y
SerialReader Thanks for the kind words! 💙💙 6y
knittedgnome @ErickaS_Flyleafunfurled I love the little things like that too! Really makes it special! 6y
knittedgnome @SerialReader you really have made something special! I'm so glad I found it!! 6y
rabbitprincess I usually have two serials going at any one time. Currently reading The Brothers Karamazov and Emma 😊 6y

Mehso-so

First #serialreader read. An ok story, also first Lovecraft, thought it was repetitive and overwritten in places and would have been better had he left out the awful dialogue. Still a fun short read

Lauredhel Oh! Can I rec "The Dream-Quest of Vellitt Boe", if you haven't read it already? 7y
DeborahSmall @Lauredhel I'll give it a go thanks! 7y
DGRachel This was my first serial read and first Lovecraft, too. I did not enjoy it. 😕 7y
DeborahSmall @DGRachel the dialogue was awful. Some books/stories age so well this wasn't one of them 7y

"The Old Ones were, the Old Ones are, and the Old Ones shall be."

MrBook Looks like the woods around my house 😊👍🏻 8y
jen_hayes7 @MrBook Jealous! I'm in Chicago so we had to head to Wisconsin to be properly surrounded by trees. 🍃 8y
MrBook Yeah, living outside of NYC for years, @BookBabe and I used to have to do the same, lol. Never been to WI, it's on the bucket list. Any good bookstores? 8y
jen_hayes7 @MrBook @BookBabe Oh, you two can totally relate then! WI has some gorgeous spots. I hope you make it over someday! As far as bookstores go, my other half tries to discourage me from going to bookstores while we're traveling. Mainly because I'm entirely unable to control myself and rarely have enough luggage space available for my purchases. I also make him carry all my bags of books around. Now I have a totally valid excuse; Litsy research! 😁 8y
MrBook 😂😂😂😂👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻🙌🏻👍🏻👌🏻!!! #LitsyResearch is the best research 😉👌🏻. 8y

Pickpick

This was a bizarre book. Creepy atmosphere, strange country folk, and scared community all make this book a pick. An early horror read.

Reviewsbylola I just started my first book on serial reader this week. 8y
Laura317 @Reviewsbylola Don't you just love serial reader? I am still working on Anne of Green Gables. Trying to figure out what to try next. 8y
Reviewsbylola It's so great! There are definitely a few classics I want to read that I wouldn't have the time or guts to read otherwise. I have wanted to read Anna Karenina for at least a decade but the length always scared me away. @Laura317 8y
