The Drowning
The Drowning: A Novel | J.P. Smith
12 posts | 9 read | 11 to read
Every seven years, a boy disappears from Camp Waukeelo. Who will be next? It doesn't take long for a little boy to disappear. Joey Proctor can't swim, but that doesn't stop camp counselor Alex Mason from leaving him out on a raft in the middle of the lake in a fit of rage. Alex only meant to scare the kid, teach him a lesson. He didn't mean to forget about him. But now Joey is gone... and his body is never found. More than twenty years later, Alex is a success. The proof is there for anyone to see, in the millions of dollars he makes, his lavish house, his beautiful wife and daughters. And no one knows what happened that summer at camp. At least, no one should know. But it looks like Joey Proctor may be back to take his revenge...

I was on vacation with my family (still am) when things started to get truly nasty with COVID-19 here in the US. I haven‘t handled the stress well so I‘ve wrapped myself into books. This is the 5th book I‘ve read in as many days. I will say we‘re staying in individual villas and cooking food so my risk of exposure is slim.

Lreads Glad you and your family are safe. Wrapping yourself in books sounds like a good way to deal. I need to try that! 💕📚💕 4y

I love being introduced to an author I haven't read before and now I have to read all their other books! Alex a camp counsellor leaves Joey on a raft to swim his way back to shore by himself. Joey is never seen again. 21 years later Alex is successful living his best life no thoughts of Joey or what happened at camp that year...blood in his swimming pool..a message from Joey carved into the pool itself. Did Joey survive, is he now seeking revenge?

A campfire on a summer night wouldn‘t be complete without a creepy urban legend. John Otis — the story of a man man who snatches a boy every seven years from that exact campground. The very next day after the story is told to campers, a boy named Joey Procter goes missing. And Alex Parson was one of the last few people to have seen him. Twenty one years later and Alex‘s past seems to have come back to haunt him, seeking revenge.

We see the story begin with camp counselors telling children the urban legend of a psychopath who kidnaps a child every seven years from the camp. The story then creates a terrifying reality, for any parent, when we find out a little boy has disappeared without a trace from camp and then we are brought to the present where we follow the camp counselor who, in a roundabout way, is responsible for the disappearance. A quick and easy read. 🌟🌟🌟🌟

This book hooked me from the very beginning. First off there's the little blurb that just immediately grabbed my attention. A spooky legend at a kids camp, somwone disappears, revenge seemingly from beyond the grave … what's not to like? I was guessing until near the end as to the outcome & pleasantly, my first two assumptions were completely wrong.

* Thank you to Netgalley for acopy of this book in exchange for an honest review *

Taking a few minutes to get further along before I have to pick up the kids and run more errands. I swear I'll never make it to the end of my to-do list
