Made In Scotland
Made In Scotland: My Grand Adventures in a Wee Country | Billy Connolly
12 posts | 6 read | 8 to read
All roads lead home. After my knighthood was announced, a woman from the BBC came to Glasgow to interview me. We sat down in a lovely hotel in a nice part of town, and she hit me with her first question: This must mean a lot to you, with you coming from nothing? I looked at her, and I laughed. I didnae come from nothing, I told her. I come from something. I grew up in the tenements of post-war Glasgow. I am very proud to be working class, and especially a working-class Glaswegian who has worked in the shipyards. I come from the working class. And, most of all, I come from Scotland. Scotland is a unique and wonderful place. Its national motto says a lot about it: Nemo me impune lacessit. A decent translation might be: By all means punch me in the nose but prepare yourself for a kick in the arse. I didnae come from nothing: I come from Scotland. And this book is about why I will always be happy and proud that I do.

I absolutely love Billy Connolly! He always makes me laugh and smile. Whenever I‘m feeling flat or low, a good dose of Billy always cheers me up. This book is wonderful. A really great snapshot of his early life and career in Glasgow. Well worth reading. He doesn‘t mention ‘The old lady on a bus‘ but it is still one the funniest stories I‘ve ever heard in my life. I cry with laughter EVERY time I hear it.

#bookreport #hiselderliness is back to talking about books this week - it seems miraculous, even though I‘m not sure about his memory some days.
I‘m surprised he got through Barrow‘s Boys because it seemed quite lengthy and academic. “I read it ALL” he announced proudly “its a bit complicated but there was enough interesting bits to keep me going”
As for Billy “he‘s a mad bugger” Does that mean you enjoyed the book? He just rolled his eyes. ⬇️

Centique He‘s reading Mudlarking at the moment and thoroughly enjoying it. “They get down in the mud by the river and pull up handfuls of it. And they find old stuff from the Dark Ages” 3y
Centique And the yellow flower is our native Kowhai (pronounced Kor Fye) 3y
TrishB Mudlarking looks great! Keeps popping up on my Amazon recommendations. Love your dads reviews ❤️❤️ 3y

Billy Connolly is always #Hilarious - even in adversity. His 2017 Comic Relief video had people laughing and crying in equal measure “"Hello. Billy Connolly here, asking for your cash. No not for me obviously. I've got cancer and Parkinson's, and I need a haircut but no."”

I really enjoyed Billy Connolly's memoir. Great conversations (especially the art one with John Byrne) and reflections on how Scotland shaped him. The photos and their accompanying captions were fun too.

TFW the one book you really want to read right now is the one you apparently left at the office, because you were reading it at lunchtime.

“life is better with swearing”. Word, Billy. Another long driving weekend, this time for a family funeral. Taking my mind off the sad listening to The Big Yin‘s autobiography

This was simply brilliant - Billy's love story to Scotland. Made more poignant by his honesty about Parkinson's Disease and how it affects him.
Gordon Kennedy narrates the audio and is he perfect choice, a couple of times, I almost forgot that it wasn't actually Billy speaking. Glimpses of comedy gold throughout.
A sure fire 5🌟 end to January.
