Eve Was Shamed
Eve Was Shamed: How British Justice is Failing Women | Helena Kennedy
5 posts | 2 read | 9 to read
What comes after #MeToo? One of our most eminent lawyers and defenders of human rights answers with this urgent, authoritative and deeply shocking look at British justice In Eve Was Shamed Helena Kennedy forensically examines the pressing new evidence that women are still being discriminated against throughout the legal system, from the High Court (where only 21% of judges are women) to female prisons (where 84% of inmates are held for non-violent offences despite the refrain that prison should only be used for violent or serious crime). In between are the so-called lifestyle choices of the Rotherham girls; the failings of the current rules on excluding victims sexual history from rape trials; battered wives being asked why they dont just leave their partners; the way statistics hide the double discrimination experienced by BAME and disabled women; the failure to prosecute cases of female genital mutilation... the list goes on. The law holds up a mirror to society and it is failing women. The #MeToo campaign has been in part a reaction to those failures. So what comes next? How do we codify what we've learned? In this richly detailed and shocking book, one of our most eminent human rights thinkers and practitioners shows with force and fury that change for women must start at the heart of what makes society just.

Both of the books closest to me didn‘t have very interesting quotes so this will have to do 😆 #isolationinteractions

This book sometimes feels like a bombardment of statistics & information. It‘s interesting to read but a lot to take in.

Morning read before heading to IKEA for some new furniture and bits and pieces. I know some people hate going but I honestly love it 😂

TrishB I‘m definitely on the hate side...I‘ve only been 3 times and 2 of those were when the kids were going away to uni and it‘s the law to go to IKEA! 4y
Cathythoughts Lovely pic! I‘ve never been to Ikea🤷🏼‍♀️... but I do love a bit of shopping 😁 4y

Any of these particularly of interest @veritysalter @jenniferw88 @klarusu?

Eve Was Shamed and Misogynation both non fiction, UK authors and UKcentric.

The Miniaturist - set in Amsterdam but British author (I think). It's also 424 pages but chucked it in in case the reading Europe thing trumped that.

Milkman, Irish author and Irish setting.

veritysalter I‘m happy with any of those @ElaineR I‘ve not read any of them before. 4y
jenniferw88 I'm happy with any, but Milkman and Misogynisation are appealing (I've read an essay by Bates and quite liked it!) 4y
ElaineR @jenniferw88 she's pretty good but guaranteed to fill you with rage 4y

jenniferw88 @ElaineR to be honest, my politics lean towards Labour - probably why i liked the essay! 4y
ElaineR @jenniferw88 ditto. The rage is aimrd at the sexism not her. She's fab. 4y
klarusu I haven‘t read any of them so all good for me! 4y
ElaineR @klarusu @veritysalter @jenniferw88 hey all. Have any on you read The Five (tagged...hopefully). Just picked it up and may be a good choice for this. However, may not be everyone's cup of tea obviously. 4y
jenniferw88 @ElaineR no, but it's on the #tbr list! Would definitely make an interesting pick. 4y
veritysalter I‘ve read it, @ElaineR it‘s very good. 4y
ElaineR @klarusu @jenniferw88 @veritysalter hey folks, hope you're all keeping well and staying safe. I was supposed to start marking up my book this week (for posting at end of month) but reality is I'm very unlikely to get to it in current circumstances as work may be rather intense over next few weeks. Are people still planning on going ahead with this? If so it may be best to count me out for now :-( (edited) 4y
jenniferw88 @ElaineR I'd just done the package for you but will understand if you want to drop out. 4y

Pickpick

This is a non fiction pick for me. An, at times blistering critique of the British judicial system and the challengers facing women to both participate and have appropriate access to it. Covers topics from women in the judiciary, domestic violence and the treatment of female victims in the courts it shows both how far we have come and yet how far there is to go. I particularly valued a chapter covering the experiences of gay and transgender women.
