The Sin of Abbé Mouret
The Sin of Abbé Mouret | Emile Zola
5 posts | 3 read | 3 to read
'I really don't understand how people can blame a priest so much, when he strays from the path.' The Sin of Abbé Mouret tells the compelling story of the young priest Serge Mouret. Striving after spiritual purity and sanctity, he lives a life of constant prayer, but his neglect of all physical needs leads to serious illness, followed by amnesia. No longer knowing he is a priest, he falls in love with his nurse Albine. Together, like a latter-day Adam and Eve, they roam through an Eden-like garden called the 'Paradou', seeking a forbidden tree in whose shade they will make love. Zola memorably shows their gradual awakening to sexuality, and his poetic descriptions of the luxuriant and beautiful Paradou create a lyrical celebration of Nature. When Serge regains his memory and recalls his priestly vows, anguish inevitably follows. The whole story, with its numerous biblical parallels, becomes a poetic reworking of the Fall of Man and a questioning of the very meaning of innocence and sin. Zola explores the conflict between Church and Nature, the sterility of the Church and the fertility of Nature. This new translation includes a wide-ranging and helpful introduction and explanatory notes.

Saw this on Instagram, and it got me thinking…. Why can‘t give Zola less than 4âï¸? I love Zola but I hated this book (It was 1âï¸ for me).

julesG Don't understand that either. 6mo

1âï¸ My toughest and least favorite of Les Rougon Macquart series, and I still have 11 books to go! Serge and Albine in the Paradou is to mimic Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden. They cling to each other like velcro! I see how Zola attempted to question the meaning of innocence and sin, Church vs nature; but the biblical parallels are just too much for me.

BiblioLitten That cover though!💚💙 2y

🙄🙄🙄 Zola, why are you doing this to me???? The girl Albine is definitely horny! This is the retelling of Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden, which I‘d love to DNF but I can‘t 🤦ðŸ»â€â™€ï¸ (I‘m committed to reading the series 🦾)

Zola‘s good in killing his characters with pitiful death. I wish he did that in this novel. Just kill them off and end it, please! Sigh.. wishful thinking, I know.

BarbaraBB Haha! 2y
StaceGhost This was the toughest read in the series for me 2y

sisilia @StaceGhost Omg thanks! I thought I was just being difficult because romance is my least fav genre. This is soooo bad 🙈 Another that I dislike is The Dream. Similar theme, but slightly better than this 2y

I started this book earlier this year but I had to stop because there‘s so much love and lust there 😑 I adore Zola but not when he‘s in the mood for lovey-dovey moments. I‘m trying to finish this before the year-end. Fingers crossed!!!!
