The Soul Of Kindness
The Soul Of Kindness | Elizabeth Taylor
7 posts | 3 read | 4 to read
'Elizabeth Taylor is finally being recognised as an important British author: an author of great subtlety, great compassion and great depth. As a reader, I have found huge pleasure in returning to Taylor's novels and short stories many times over. As a writer I've returned to her too - in awe of her achievements, and trying to work out how she does it' Sarah Waters A brilliant novel about the damage caused by relentless 'niceness'. Uncritical, encouraging, 'the soul of kindness', Flora's help is the cruelest hindrance to those who love her most. 'Here I am!' Flora called to Richard as she went downstairs. For a second, Meg felt disloyalty. It occurred to her of a sudden that Flora was always saying that, and that it was in the tone of one giving a lovely present. Elegant, blonde and beautiful, Flora has everything under control: her perfect home, her husband Richard, her friend Meg, adoring Kit, and the writer Patrick. Flora entrances everyone, dangling visions of happiness and success before their spellbound eyes. All are bewitched by this golden tyrant. Except, that is, for the clear-eyed painter, Liz, who can see that Flora's kindness is the sweetest poison of them all.

So good! Taylor is amazing, keenly insightful, I want to read all of her books! These character study slow-burn, what is going?! low plot kind of stories are my jam. And I want all the pretty covers.

Flora is so nice and thinks she is so clever and knows what is best for everyone- is she naive or is she manipulative? I do wonder, though, if we could get a book from the artist‘s perspective. I gotta wonder if Taylor actually didn‘t like people.

BkClubCare The artist character, Liz, is so negatively portrayed it was off-putting. (edited) 3y

Have you met a person who is so kind and s/he is aware about it that it reaches a point that s/he becomes terribly irritating? Taylor presented it in this book with her usual subtle way. She drew the extreme opposites of the characters, and let us judge them. I love this! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Cathythoughts Yes !! I don‘t trust those people... 😬 6y
emilyhaldi I know several of those people 🙄 6y

sisilia @Mdargusch I read two so far. At Mrs Lippincote‘s and In A Summer Season. I think the tagged book is much better 😊 A lot of people favor A View of the Harbour, though 6y
minkyb I must try one as well! 6y
