A Vineyard in Andalusia
A Vineyard in Andalusia | Maria Duenas
16 posts | 7 read | 18 to read
A ruined merchant sets sail to seek his fortune in the 19th-century Spanish Empire. Haunted by his lost wealth, he gambles the last of his money on what will become the greatest adventure of his life - and eventually, his salvation. When Mauro Larrea meets Soledad Montalvo, wife to a London wine merchant, she drags him into a most unexpected future, from the new Mexican republic to magnificent colonial Havana; and from the West Indies to the Andalusia of the 1860s, when the wine trade with England made the small city of Jerez legendary. A Vineyard in Andalusia tells of glories and defeats, of silver mines, family intrigues, vineyards, cellars, and splendid cities of faded grandeur. This is a story of courage before adversity, and of a destiny altered for good by the force of passion.

Mehso-so

Our April Cheers to 2023 book club book... This one had been lingering on my TBR list for a while! I have some mixed feelings about this book, and for me, it was a bit of a roller coaster ride. There were times that I absolutely loved it, and times I really struggled. I'm not sure if that is because this was originally written in Spanish and translated or not, but it just didn't have a seamless flow for me. This is a sweeping (cont in comments)..

TheHeartlandBookFairy and dramatic family saga filled with heartbreak and passion. My biggest disappointment was expecting the "Vineyard" per the title to be the primary storyline, and the vineyard didn't actually make an appearance in the book until nearly half way in and then never really plays anything more than a "bit" role in the book until the very end. To be honest, I'd like to see a sequel to this book starting with the vineyard and how Mauro Larrea (& Soledad Montalvo?) bring the vineyard back to life. To see where their story goes. The ending was both very enjoyable and a bit of a letdown all at the same time time, it felt rushed IMO. 3.5⭐️s 12mo

Good. Even though there were interesting characters and concept idea I think alot of this story was lost in translation from its original source i.eh Spanish. As it felt like it dragged at certain points and some scenes just didn't flow or make sense.

Thank you again @Cathythoughts as you bought this for me last year for my birthday.

Cathythoughts Your welcome! At least it was a pick .. kind of anyway. I‘d say a lot was lost in translation, as you say. Time flies on Litsy ❤️😘 4y

#dnf for now. Summer‘s too short to spend plodding through a novel that doesn‘t seem to be going anywhere. I‘ll probably pick it back up in the winter when I am dreaming of warm settings.

I‘m on page 142 and I just can‘t go on. We haven‘t made it to the vineyard of the title; the protagonist is still conducting business machinations right and left. He‘s actually a bit of an asshole and I don‘t feel connected to him or the story. Such a departure from Duenas‘ previous books. I‘m disappointed and moving on.

mhillis Agreed! I bailed on this one too 6y
JSW @mhillis have you read her other books? I liked 6y

#TBRtemptation post 3! Just released. Set in 1860s, Mexico City, Havana, and Jerez, Spain (a legendary enclave that prospered from its wine trade with England). Mauro sees his fortunes disappear after his life-long work is destroyed in a calamitous event. He gambles the rest of his money away and has an uncertain future. Then he meets Soledad, a combative widow, & works to restore her legendary vineyard & win her heart. #blameLitsy #blameMrBook 😎

And just because I don‘t already have 5 books lined up to read, I needed really needed to grab the hot off the press and onto the library shelves, The Vineyard. I have owned her The Time in Between for years but still have to read that too!

Estupendo libro. He leído los tres de esta autora y es evidente su progresión y la madurez literaria que ha ido adquiriendo.
