Wolf: Jack Caffery | Mo Hayder
12 posts | 22 read | 7 to read
The sensational new Jack Caffery thriller from Mo Hayder, bestselling author of Gone and Poppet. Who's afraid? I believe, from what I can hear, that either my daughter or my wife has just been attacked. I don't know the outcome. The house is silent. Fourteen years ago two teenage lovers were brutally murdered in a patch of remote woodland. The prime suspect confessed to the crimes and was imprisoned. Now, one family is still trying to put the memory of the killings behind them. But at their isolated hilltop house . . . the nightmare is about to return.

In that lull where i can still eat mince pies for breakfast it is time to catch up on reviews as i relaxed after xmas day mayhem with a couple of crime novels. This was the apparently final jack caffrey and if it is the last it was a good send off for what has been an up and down series, anyone know if the author plans a return? A home invasion draws caffrey via the walking man to investigate + an ending that left me wanting more of thecharacter

Crazeedi I am always so sad when I read the last book of a series, my favorite author of a series has passed away so I know there wont be more 2mo
TrishB Not started this series yet! Have first one on the pile. 2mo

andrew61 Birdman is definitely gruesome but worth reading thereafter they vary in quality but i enjoy the character. I'll be interested to see your views. 2mo
Lindy I‘m still eating leftover gingerbread cake for breakfast. With plain yogurt, to make it healthy. 😉 (edited) 2mo

This book is a home invasion nightmare with several twists and turns. The scenes inside the house ramped up the tension. The scenes with Jack doing police work were slow by comparison. A good addition to the series.

Finally finished Wolf, not because I didn‘t enjoy it, but just fitting it in around other commitments. Another very interesting book in this series, and yet again the series seems to have taken another turn. It‘s like there have been about three different series during the progression of the first 7 books in this series. This was a quite unique detective book, not following the usual format - however it most definitely worked. Thoroughly recommend

EadieB I liked this one too! 5mo
gradcat Another Mo Hayden! I guess I need to read this author, because you & @EadieB seem to read a lot of these books! 5mo
EadieB @gradcat it‘s a series so start with 5mo

Andrew65 @gradcat I‘ve also enjoyed her standalone. @eadieb 5mo
Tove_Reads My fave in the series. Different. Strange series in the context of a series. 5mo
gradcat Thanks for the recommendations, you guys @EadieB & @Andrew65 ... I‘m going to try to get to tagged before the year is out. 5mo
Andrew65 @gradcat Overqll enjoyed this series, one or two of them are very gritty. An intesting theme running through them. Hoping there may be more written. 5mo
Andrew65 @Tove_Reads Possibly my second favourite in the series. 5mo
gradcat Omigod...I‘m REALLY falling behind in my Litsy readings & responses. How are you feeling—any better? 5mo
Andrew65 @gradcat Been a really bad week at work and will be ongoing issues. Told this week I had Fatty Liver Disease but big reduction in cholesterol. So now need to go on a low fat and low carbohydrate diet and hopefully help liver to recover or diabetes or other issues ahead. Also acid problems and pain still ongoing. @eadieb 5mo
EadieB @Andrew65 Exercise when you can too will help. Audiobook time! I know work does get in the way. You can lick this problem by setting your mind to do it and determination. I have faith in you! Good luck! 5mo
Andrew65 @EadieB Dead right Eadie, you know me well - when I set my mind to achieve something I usually exceed on it. And yes I do need to do more exercise, especially during term time. At least know what dealing with in the main. Thanks 😊👍 (edited) 5mo
EadieB @Andrew65 You're welcome! Don't let it get you down. Stare it in the face and say, “I Can Do It!“ 5mo
gradcat @Andrew65 I‘m just so sorry you‘re still feeling bad, plus have to restrict your diet. It can‘t be fun, and I know I absolutely HATE to exercise, but if that‘ll fix it, here‘s hoping you can find the time to do it. ♥️ 5mo
Andrew65 @gradcat Thanks 🥰 Seems to be one of those phases in life where trying to plod uphill through molasses! I‘m the same about exercise! (edited) 5mo
gradcat @Andrew65 Sorry for you, but I really, REALLY hope you get to feeling better! ♥️ 5mo
Andrew65 @gradcat Thanks and means a lot, life very tough at the moment dealing with health issues and some professional issues too! You have been a real friend through this, and I will never forget this support. 🥰🥰🥰 5mo
gradcat @Andrew65 Oh, Andrew, it‘s so nice of you to say that. Thank you. I hope I am some help to you, and you must know you can always count on me & @EadieB ... anytime you need a mental (which is so important re physical) boost, we‘re here for you. ♥️♥️♥️ 4mo

My fave book in the Jack Caffery series. Gruesome and not for the faint of heart. This book is more focused than the other ones, and we finally get some answers. The Walking man is working on his own agenda, and so is Jack. In the meantime two men keep a family of three shackled up in the family home, and something really fishy is going on. The family dog gets away, runs into the Walking Man, and Jack finds them. To find out the rest read the book

Andrew65 Still only about 12% through this. 6mo
EadieB @Tove_Reads Nice review! 6mo

julesG I'm ever so sorry, I fell behind. Flea and the cave in the quarry made me put Gone to the side. I'm annoyed with myself for not getting back into it. @Andrew65 @Tove_Reads @EadieB 6mo
Andrew65 @julesG Easily done! I hated that part too! 6mo

Starting the final published book in the Jack Caffery Series.

EadieB I like this one especially the ending! Are you feeling any better? 6mo
Andrew65 @EadieB Got two different tests the next two Saturdays, Endoscopy then an ultrasound. Thankfully pains eased off, still there at times after eating but not as intense. Helped by virtually eradicating all fats from my diet and having quite a bland diet. Certainly helping me lose weight! 😂 What‘s with salad today, poached chicken breast, grilled chicken breast. 😂 Acid reflux not too bad given had to stop medication for the weekend. 6mo
Andrew65 @EadieB Fingers crossed this continues. 🤞 6mo

Andrew65 @EadieB Can‘t wait to see the ending, intriguing opening. 6mo
EadieB @Andrew65 Nice to hear the pain has eased off because of change in diet. Hopefully, it‘s some type of irritation that will get better as time goes on. First thing is to find the problem and then find what you have to do to fix it. On the bright side, losing weight is a good thing! 6mo
EadieB @Andrew65 I found the story very interesting but brutal in parts! Just like Carter‘s books, don‘t really need the gritty stuff but I guess that‘s what sells books‘ 6mo
Andrew65 @EadieB Yes even before the issues came on I was changing my diet to lose some weight. 6mo
Andrew65 @EadieB Good point comparing them to Chris Carter‘s Books. 6mo
EadieB @Andrew65 A lady in the health food store was telling me that you should eat certain foods according to your blood type. Check website Drlam.com I asked my doctor about the diet. He said, “so many crazy diets, just eat fresh foods and stay away from processed foods and cut out sugar.” That‘s my problem because I have a sweet tooth. 6mo
Andrew65 @EadieB Me too, but not had any cakes or sweet things in almost 8 weeks! Plenty of fruit and vegetables at the moment. Thanks for the link, will check it out. 6mo
EadieB @Andrew65 You have to search under diet or Eat according to your blood type to find the info on the website. 6mo

Walking Man finds a dog wandering alone with the words; HELP US; attached to its collar. He calls on DI Jack Caffery to investigate. Caffery is reluctant until the Walking Man promises new information regarding the childhood disappearance of Caffery's brother. The Anchor-Ferrers, a local family, are held hostage in their home. Horrific book from Mo Hayder. Not for the faint of heart! Ending was the best when Caffery got Ewen info. Very surprising!

MrT She doesn't write them quick enough! 6mo

Andrew65 Be Thursday at least until I can pick it up at the library. My reading capacity will massively slow down now, as back at school tomorrow. This month most probably read less than half what I read this month. 6mo
EadieB @MrT Yes! This was the last published in 2014. I was wondering if there will be another but I saw she does take awhile between books. 6mo
EadieB @Andrew65 Back to school! Boo hiss! 6mo
Andrew65 @EadieB And some 👎 Currently having a break on the sea at Edinburgh before we head on south later on. 6mo
EadieB @Andrew65 Very nice! August went by so fast! Safe travels! 6mo
Andrew65 @EadieB Thanks, it did! Now I need to be more selective about what I read as limited reading time. 6mo
EadieB @Andrew65 Group and buddy reads will keep you busy, for sure! 6mo
Andrew65 @EadieB And ensure I have to take time to read. 6mo

This is the most recent Jack Caffery book. I don't think I liked the main mystery in this one quite as much as some of the others, and I missed Flea. But I did really enjoy this. I saw the twists coming but it was still interesting to see how it unfolded. And omg the revelation in the last chapter blew me away! One of those endings where you can't think about anything else or start a new book for a bit.

Finished #Wolf last night, my first Mo Hayder Jack Caffrey thriller- number 7 in a series. The writing is good and if you are a hard core psychological thriller fan then this series may be for you. For me this was 400 pages of the torture of a family - I finished it obviosly to get to the solution- which didn't hold for me but I cannot pan it- just not my wheelhouse- giving this pic of a civilized wolf to redeem all Wolves!!! 3 stars🐺⭐️⭐️⭐️

julesG I liked the first books in the series. Stopped half-way through Poppet, didn't like it anymore. 2y
Booksnchill @julesG When I finished I thought my level of this type of thriller was probably books 1 and 2!!!! 2y
julesG The first two were the best, you're right. 2y

Bookzombie I have read the first couple in this series. They were dark but I enjoyed them. Need to get back to it. 2y
Booksnchill @Bookzombie I hope I won't be lost starting at #7 2y
Karkar @Booksnchill is it worth starting at the beginning of the series or just picking one and going with it? This one sounds good 2y
Booksnchill @Karkar I don't know this is my first one- really dark psychological procedural but I am not lost for the backstory so probably OK but I defer to others 2y
Bookzombie @Karkar @Booksnchill I think you will be okay. 🙂 I like to start from the beginning myself but I don't think it is a requirement. 2y
Karkar @Bookzombie @Booksnchill thank you!! 😊 2y

Finally got around to reading this author and have to say Mo Hayder is fantastic. Had me guessing what was really going on all the way to the last page.
