From the author of The Sandcastle Empire comes a sci-fi thriller thats equal parts Illuminae and One of Us Is Lying. Lindley Hamilton has been the leader of the space station Lusca since every first generation crew member on board, including her mother, the commander, was killed by a deadly virus. Lindley always assumed shed captain the Lusca one day, but she never thought that day would come so soon. And she never thought it would be like thisstruggling to survive every day, learning how to keep the Lusca running, figuring out how to communicate with Earth, making sure they dont run out of food. When a member of the surviving second generation dies from symptoms that look just like the deadly virus, though, Lindley feels her world shrinking even smaller. And as more people die, Lindley must face the terrifying realitythat either the virus has mutated, or one of their own is a killer.

1. The MC‘s character development and how I was able to root for her every step of the way. That‘s the reason why I felt every bit of tension in the story despite the book‘s obvious flaws.
2. I wish that there was even more to the mystery rather than what was revealed at the end. So maybe a sequel could‘ve had an even bigger twist waiting to be unfolded and causing more trouble in the ship.

These are the two books I read this month. Enjoyed both of them so that alone makes it worth a good reading month for me 🥰 at the end of the day, it‘s quality over quantity!
How many books did you read in March and what was your fav?

(PS…I have no idea why the hue in my camera today made this picture look like I‘m in the middle of a Saw trap game)

Gissy I liked The Female of the Species. So sad too. I read 13 books this month. My fav was Hamnet but I enjoyed most of them. There were a couple of thrillers/suspense that I really liked. 2y
bthegood I read 11 (4 were graphic novels) - my favorite was Batman: The Long Halloween - have a good week 🙂 2y

Book 47🎧 3.5⭐️

I wished this one had a little more depth, but over all I enjoyed it!

A virus from Earth has come back and has taken out the entire fleet on this starship. All that is left are the children, supposably immune. When they also slowly start dying, they must take control and try to survive while they figure out if it has mutated… or if there is a murderer among them.

jeannasser I just finished this one a few days ago! Also made a review! Kayla Olson‘s writing is amazing and I will read anything she writes from now on. I wished the other characters besides Lindley were better developed. Because I didn‘t really care for the rest I didn‘t really care for the final reveal. But this book still kept me at the edge of my seat the whole time. 🥰 2y

I know you guys are probably tired of seeing TSS quotes but I couldn‘t move on from it without sharing these last two quotes. Here‘s one of them, and I‘m glad to see another fellow author bring in a positive message against fear. #fearisaliar

This review is gonna sound negative…but just know that I enjoyed the VAST majority of this book. I ADORE Olson‘s writing style and Lindley as an MC. This book kept me at the edge of my seat and I felt every bit of tension in the story. I was about to give it an 8. But…that last 10% What was that? It‘s almost as if Olson herself didn‘t know the truth behind the mystery OR how it was gonna end so she kind of…flew through it just to get it over with

jeannasser To elaborate more on the cons of this book. Yes…I know this book isn‘t perfect. I can understand why the reception is so polarizing. Like the majority, I didn‘t care for either of the male love interests. I cared for the female characters but none of the male ones. So you may think a 7 is too nice of a rating. Like I said, the writing, the MC‘s development, and the tension made up for all of that and I still enjoyed it A LOT. 2y
jeannasser So in conclusion…yeah, there are SO MANY reasons why I shouldn‘t like this book. No other character was developed other than Lindley. While the love triangle scenes were sort of cute, yeah they were unnecessary and added nothing to the story. Yeah I get it. But guess what? I STILL LOVED A LOT OF THINGS ABOUT IT. It was fun, intense, & dark. And that‘s way more than what I expect from a book. I loved Lindley and I liked this book. I‘m unashamed 2y
jeannasser Okay now for the “twist.” I did predict literally everything else that was unraveling. Especially that the deaths were murders instead of the virus. However, I didn‘t suspect Haven, so I was shocked, BUT it was a disappointing shock. She wasn‘t that well developed so therefore, I didn‘t really…care that it was her. I could‘ve sworn it was Heath and even if it was plain obvious I would‘ve enjoyed seeing that even more. Her intentions were unclear. 2y

Okay…I‘m gonna rant a little bit 🥰
I know I‘m only 30% into this but that‘s enough time for me to decide that I am loving this so far and I am super invested in the story. The fact that this book has a 3.50 avg rating on Goodreads and a 40% avg rating on here BAFFLES me. People need to be a little more open-minded with books instead of hearing the phrase “love triangle” and instantly going 🤮. Remember Twilight? That‘s love triangle too. 🤷‍♂️

I grabbed this because I wanted a fun sci-fi adventure book to help me recover from Female of the Species.
And this is the first page…
I‘m not even 1% into this. Like give me a second to breathe!!
Hello? How are you? Where did that all go??

LitStephanie That is a pretty intense first page! 2y
WJCintron I want to read that one!! That first page is SO GOOD!!! 2y
jeannasser @LitStephanie IKR 😭 genius way to grab the reader‘s attention 2y
jeannasser @WJCintron I LOVE her writing! It‘s going great so far. It‘s a shame this book is getting mixed reviews on GR. 2y

A slow starter but it gradually builds into a very good YA sci-if thriller. It was so entertaining I didn‘t even mind the ubiquitous love triangle. On the downside, although the six central characters were quite well-fleshed out, the reader doesn‘t learn much about the others which means it‘s difficult to care when they were killed off. An entertaining 4🌟

All this book did was reaffirm my fears of being the one in charge! 😅 Honestly though, didn't really care about any of the characters, the love triangle was completely unnecessary, and I called the reveal extremely early.

The novel is in turns wistful and poetic. Filled with interesting characters and difficult scenarios, this debut is designed to leave readers thinking.
