Tolkien: Maker of Middle-Earth
Tolkien: Maker of Middle-Earth | Catherine McIlwaine

This richly illustrated book explores the huge creative endeavour behind Tolkien's enduring popularity. Lavishly illustrated with over 300 images of his manuscripts, drawings, maps and letters, the book traces the creative process behind his most famous literary works - The Hobbit, The Lord of the Rings and The Silmarillion and reproduces personal photographs and private papers (some of which have never been seen before in print). Tolkien drew on his deep knowledge of medieval literature and language to inform his literary imagination. Six introductory essays cover some of the main themes in Tolkien's life and work including the influence of northern languages and legends on the creation of his own legendarium; his concept of 'Fa?rie' as a literary construct; the central importance of his invented languages in his fantasy writing; his visual imagination and its emergence in his artwork; and the encouragement he derived from the literary group known as the Inklings. This book brings together the largest collection of original Tolkien material ever assembled in a single volume. Drawing on the archives of the Tolkien collections at the Bodleian Libraries, Oxford, and Marquette University, Milwaukee, as well as private collections, this exquisitely produced catalogue draws together the worlds of J.R.R. Tolkien - scholarly, literary, creative and domestic - offering a rich and detailed understanding and appreciation of this extraordinary author.

I checked this out from the library a couple of days ago. I am so impressed by it that I immediately went online & purchased my own copy.

vivastory @JazzFeathers As soon as I saw it, I knew I'd want a copy. Do you know of a definitive collection of Alan Lee's LOTR illustrations? I have the sketchbook checked out, but I thought maybe there was a better collection. 5y

The Tolkien exhibition at the Bodleian was amazing! Such a privilege to see so many things from the archive, paintings, manuscripts, photographs, doodles, letters. Fascinating and well put together. The interactive relief map of the Fellowship's journey was mesmerising. No photography inside so I can only does you my souvenirs!

Soubhiville All of that is gorgeous! How cool. 6y
jillrhudy DYING of envy. How I would love to go. 6y

JazzFeathers 😍😍😍😍😍😍 l loved it too. You're right, the map was indeed mesmerising, l don't even know why. I had never realised how much art Tolkien did for his books. Even the covers! 6y
Moray_Reads @JazzFeathers it was interesting to see so many of his paintings and his different styles. Seeing the map in 3D made the difficulties of the journeys so visible, all those mountains! And the excruciatingly slow pace of poor Frodo and Sam compared to the rest of the Fellowship 6y

JazzFeathers @Chrissyreadit @Daisey @saresmoore lt was fantastic. I loved seeing all his manuscrips and illustrations. I never realised he did so much illustrated work for the publisher. Most of the info on the tour were known to me, but it was great to see the places. Oxford is such a lovely town. Never thought to take pictures with my phone, but l'll post a blog with all the pictures soon. 6y
TK421 That sounds like an amazing day! I had read about the exhibit at Oxford, and would love to travel to see it. I can't wait for the blog.😊 6y

This book was made as part of the Tolkien exhibition (summer & fall 2018) at the Bodleian Library. It‘s terrific. With short essays by the best writers on Tolkien & images (some never-before published) from Oxford‘s archive & the Tolkien estate, it‘s a wonderful summary book of JRRT‘s life & work. I‘m excited now for Christopher Tolkien‘s stand-alone release of his father‘s 1st major story of the Elder Days: The Fall of Gondolin.

I had to leave my collector's edition at work because my bag wasn't big enough so the pictures aren't great but it's just a taster of the gorgeous work. Can't wait to see the actual exhibition in September ❤️ (even the outer cardboard box was embossed with Tolkien's initials!)

JazzFeathers Oh. My. Goodness! 😍😍😍😍😍 Are you going to the exhibition in Oxford? I'm trying to go too. Probably end of August. 6y
Moray_Reads @JazzFeathers yes, my friend and I are trying to synchronise dates but it probably won't be until October. It looks amazing! 6y
