Earthly Joys: A Novel | Philippa Gregory
6 posts | 13 read | 10 to read
#1 New York Times bestselling author and queen of royal fiction (USA TODAY) Philippa Gregory brings to life the passionate, turbulent times of seventeenth-century England as seen through the eyes of the countrys most famous royal gardener. John Tradescants fame and skill as a gardener are unsurpassed in seventeenth-century England, but it is his clear-sighted honesty and loyalty that make him an invaluable servant. As an informal confidant of Sir Robert Cecil, adviser to King James I, he witnesses the making of history, from the Gunpowder Plot to the accession of King Charles I and the growing animosity between Parliament and court. Tradescants talents soon come to the attention of the most powerful man in the country, the irresistible Duke of Buckingham, the lover of King Charles I. Tradescant has always been faithful to his masters, but Buckingham is unlike any he has ever known: flamboyant, outrageously charming, and utterly reckless. Every certainty upon which Tradescant has based his lifehis love of his wife and children, his passion for his work, his loyalty to his countryis shattered as he follows Buckingham to court, to war, and to the forbidden territories of human love.

We made it! Here is the LAST #unreadandontheshelf

I thought we‘d end on a high note with another favorite author. I‘m really excited to read these and when I do pick up Philippa Gregory I tend to bing read a bunch and then take a break and come back later. So there is a good chance these will all get read at the same time.

I haven‘t decided yet but I may bring this hashtag back with my digital library. But for now I‘m going to give it a rest.

MayJasper I loved reading the top two. Earthly Joys is one of my all time favourite books 👍 4y
BacklistReader @MayJasper I‘ve definitely been eyeing that one lately. I think it might be the next one of her‘s that I pick up. So far my favorite of hers is 4y

Great idea, @Andrew65 - a readathon is just what my TBR needs. I‘m got a lot of books in progress, I‘m behind (okay - not yet started) on #15books15weeks and I‘ve got a bunch of buddy reads in the go. So my goals are:
1. Finish 2 of my 4 in progress books
2. Stay up-to-date on #potteraday and #PemberLittens
3. Catch up on #HeyCarrots
4. Get my #flaviabuddyread done for this month
5. Get 4 of my #15booksin15weeks books done.

Can‘t wait!!

Andrew65 Great to have you with us. Good luck with these great goals. 😊👍 4y
Linsy Ooh, I love this! #JoysOfJune looks fun! And good, because I'm so behind on my goals. 4y

Pickpick

A fictionalised account of the life of John Tradescant Snr a famous 17th century gardener and obsessive plantsman to the upperclass English society. He introduced many plant species to UK including tulip bulbs. Tulip bulbs became an #obsession and were traded for outrageous sums of money until the market crashed. Yep, that really did happen!
I loved this book, the writing is beautiful.

LeahBergen I liked it, too. 7y
Eyelit Have you read Dumas tale about tulips? 7y
MayJasper @Eyelit I think I may have many years ago. Is it a good read? Is it about the struggle to produce a black tulip? 7y
Eyelit It's been a long time since I read it - but I remember a contest for producing a black tulip and there are ties to the execution of a minister and somewhere in there is a love story. I liked it enough to keep a copy all these years - so I should perhaps read it again one of these days 😄 7y
MayJasper @Eyelit I think I should have a re-read too as I can remember less than you! 😁 7y
