An adventurous debut novel that cross cuts between a competitive college swimmers harrowing days in the Rocky Mountains after a major airline disaster and her recovery supported by the two men who love heronly one of whom knows what really happened in the wilderness. Nineteen-year-old Avery Delacorte loves the water. Growing up in Brookline, Massachusetts, she took swim lessons at her community pool and captained the local team; in high school, she raced across bays and sprawling North American lakes. Now a sophomore on her universitys nationally ranked team, she struggles under the weight of new expectations but life is otherwise pretty good. Perfect, really. That all changes when Averys red-eye home for Thanksgiving makes a ditch landing in a mountain lake in the Colorado Rockies. She is one of only five survivors, which includes three little boys and Colin Shea, who happens to be her teammate. Colin is also the only person in Averys college life who challenged her to swim her own events, to be her own personsomething she refused to do. Instead shes avoided him since the first day of freshman year. But now, faced with sub-zero temperatures, minimal supplies, and the dangers of a forbidding nowhere, Avery and Colin must rely on each other in ways they never couldve imagined. In the wilderness, the concept of survival is clear-cut. Simple. In the real world, its anything but.

This book has some flaws but overall it is decent. I didn't like that we are told right away that Avery and Colin get rescued from the plane crash. It took away from the suspense and urgency when the author was talking about them being stranded. Some of the flashbacks got confusing too.

I finished this within 24 hours. Trauma, survival, healing, and just the right amount of romance are perfectly interwoven in this book. I love the switch between past and present(and it‘s so well done that there‘s absolutely no confusion with the constant switches).

The narrative alternates between the fight for survival after a plane crash, & the fight for survival after the rescue. On the one hand, I couldn‘t put it down. I liked the author‘s writing, the plot, & the scenes out in the wilderness, but there were some large, unexplained jumps in the plot, the MC‘s after rescue internal strife made me scratch my head at times, & some of it just didn‘t make sense. I really enjoyed it, but it needs a good edit.

Has anyone read this? I'm almost done but need to know if I missed a couple things or if it's the book - it's driving me crazy. 🤯🤯🤯

AudiobookingWithLeah I have, but I probably wouldn't be much help with your questions because I read it 5 years ago. (edited) 4y
BookDragonNotWorm @AUDIOBOOKINGWITHLEAH I don't suppose if you remember large gaps in the plot (the guy being critical in ICU then suddenly at a restaurant with no explanation or mention in between to name just one)? I skimmed back to see if I missed it, but found nothing and it's driving me crazy. I keep thinking it's me, because how could a traditionally published book that underwent professional editing have such holes?!?! 4y
AudiobookingWithLeah I remember there was a plane crash. Her, a guy and a kid (maybe 2) survive...in the woods near the water. The guy almost dies....right? I listened to Audio, so maybe if there was a plot hole, I just thought I tuned out and missed it. 4y
BookDragonNotWorm @AUDIOBOOKINGWITHLEAH Thanks! I appreciate it! 4y

Hmm. Well, I'm really on the fence with this one. I almost want to call it a pan, but I never wanted to quit, so I bumped it up. I wanted to like this book. I just couldn't get past the many implausible details and the forced love triangle. And the kids? They just so willingly let these complete strangers take them away from their (dead) parents? This was definitely a rough one.

The past week has been rough. Time to settle in and escape into another world for a couple hours. I've got my comfy clothes on, ice cream, one of my cats, and my #kindle. This is my happy place.

Started this last night. Didn't notice the interesting reading juxtaposition of starting it after Ask The Passengers. Ask The Passengers sort of just jumped off the library shelf at me. This is why I like to let fate handle my reading list...because serendipity is quite entertaining in literature. Hmm, come to think of it, even The Elon Musk book had flight in it.

EvieBee I love how one book leads to another, etc. Serendipitous indeed. Love the ocean life on the wall! I have a 🐳 guest bathroom. Maybe someday I'll finally get around to reading Moby Dick, the basis of the scheme, lol 7y
JanuarieTimewalker13 @EvieBee84 ha! Maybe! I want an ocean type bathroom also, but still saving $ for that glorious day! If you were to walk in my house, you wouldn't know if a 50 year old or a 10 year old decorated...lol...parts are traditional, parts are surfer dude. But all parts happy🏝 7y

Unputdownable! I love a good survival story, and then coupled with "what happens after" and the twist of will-they-won't-they... I was hooked! Caution: do NOT read if you have a plane flight coming up! So good!

EvieBee So glad you liked this one. Got it on sale today and can't wait to read it! 7y

4.5⭐️ Beautiful debut novel by Claire Kells. Nineteen y/o swimmer Avery have what seems to be a perfect life. Until one day, her red-eye flight crashes into the cold water. As one of the only 5 survivors, along with three young boys & Colin, her teammate, we follow her emotional journey through the wilderness and the aftermath. Beautifully written story of survival, love and healing 💕.

Uggggh if this wasn't my #bookisholympics book one, I would have bailed but I ain't a quitter when I'm going for gold😉 I think I'm in the minority but I found Avery, the main character whiney and unrealistic. I thought there were numerous flaws and holes in the plot and the entire read felt disjointed. This was not a winner for me👎🏼But I'm one book down😀
