Harlem | Walter Dean Myers, Terry Deary
21 posts | 12 read | 3 to read
Langston Hughes, Countee Cullen, and James Baldwin have sung their songs about Harlem. Now Newbery Honor author Walter Dean Myers joins their chorus in calling to life the deep, rich and hope-filled history of this community. Christopher Myers' boldly assembled art resonates with feeling and tells a tale all its own.

“A carnival of children, people the daytime streets, ring-a-Levi‘s warriors, stickball heroes, hide-and-seek knights and ladies, waiting to sing their own sweet songs, living out their own slam-dunk dreams, listening, for the coming of blues.”

This book is a Caldecott Winner, and for good reason(pub.1997). The poems show insight into a life that some people may not know and illustrations show a beautiful look onto different types of art in book illustration.
I suggest this book highly. It shows a life that people may not know or think of. It also gives the thoughts of being thankful for ones life.
“Sometimes it is the artist looking into a mirror, Painting a portrait of his own heart.“

This book has very cool illustrations of Harlem and the city that has so much history. I really enjoyed the historical aspect of the book and the fact that the author implemented where so many people came from to get to Harlem.

This book tells the story of Harlem and all the things that influence the people of Harlem and what makes Harlem unique. This illustrations are gorgeous and help enhance the story so much. You can tell how detailed the painting of it is by the use of color and shading.

A heartfelt book that gives an example of a boy who has to worry about his place in life because of the color of his skin. Traveling to Harlem allows the boy to not have to worry about the daily struggles he deals with because of his culture and allows dreamed dreams. It touches on culture and shows how music can help expression. Award: Caldecott Honor; Published: 1997; Illustrator: Christopher Myers

I think this book would be great for a classroom to discuss African American culture and the unique richness of the beautiful art and music that stems from Harlem, and their city itself. I think that African American culture in Harlem is depicted very well and can inform students of different cultures and how they are influenced by location.

This book is about the culture, heritage and language of people from Harlem. The culture there is incredibly unique, and is displayed as being very artistic with music, art and dance. The characters talk to inform the readers about Harlem‘s dialect and how people typically speak in that city. The city is also shown as very busy, with multiple important streets and destinations. Along with some iconic figures described in the book.

#WinterWonderland Day 4: Tagged book reminds me of #AngelOfHarlem, a collection of poems by Myers illustrated by his son. It is clear that Harlem is a place where dreams are woven and hopes shared amongst people of all races, colors, beliefs, nationalities. My review: https://wp.me/pDlzr-2cu

This is a lovely picture book, with beautiful poetry and illustrations. My lovely baby niece (6 months) seems to love it too, and kicked her little legs in excitement for all the pictures.

robinb This is a lovely picture as well. 😊❤️ 6y
