The Knowledge: A Richard Jury Mystery | Martha Grimes
8 posts | 7 read | 8 to read
With their signature wit, sly plotting, and gloriously offbeat characters, Martha Grimess New York Times bestselling Richard Jury mysteries are utterly unlike anyone elses detective novels (Washington Post). In the latest series outing, The Knowledge, the Scotland Yard detective nearly meets his match in a Baker Street Irregulars-like gang of kids and a homicide case that reaches into east Africa. Robbie Parsons is one of Londons finest, a black cab driver who knows every street, every theater, every landmark in the city by heart. In his backseat is a man with a gun in his handa man who brazenly committed a crime in front of the Artemis Club, a rarefied art gallery-cum-casino, then jumped in and ordered Parsons to drive. As the criminal eventually escapes to Nairobi, Detective Superintendent Richard Jury comes across the case in the Saturday paper. Two days previously, Jury had met and instantly connected with one of the victims of the crime, a professor of astrophysics at Columbia and an expert gambler. Feeling personally affronted, Jury soon enlists Melrose Plant, Marshall Trueblood, and his whole gang of merry characters to contend with a case that takes unexpected turns into Tanzanian gem mines, a closed casino in Reno, Nevada, and a pub that only Londons black cabbies, those who have the knowledge, can find. The Knowledge is prime fare from one of the most fascinating mystery writers today (Houston Chronicle).

Today‘s book mail features installments in two of my favorite mystery series, the first book in a new-to-me series and fairy tales because why not?!? I started reading the Richard Jury series in the 80s when I was a teenager. I haven‘t kept up in the past few years but I‘m ready to dive back in for a reread. Also love Victoria Thompson‘s series which is likewise due for a reread. As for the other two, I‘m looking forward to some good reading!

#adventrecommends Day 24 @emilyrose_x
And so we come to the end of advent, and I can‘t think of a better series to recommend than the Richard Jury mysteries. Grimes has other series, but this one has everything: a melancholy, orphaned detective, his withering, hypochondriacal sergeant, a beautiful, upstairs neighbor, plus a zany, madcap group of friends living in “Northants” who often help Jury in oddball ways. There are elements of fantasy, ⬇️

gradcat ⬆️ the supernatural, physics, and anthropomorphism scattered throughout this series—truly, as I said, something for everyone. But most of all, these books are sheer fun. Happy holidays, Littens...I love you all! 🥰🙏❤️ 5y
dsfisher A fun series with some hysterical characters. One of my favorites 5y
gradcat @dsfisher So happy to find a fellow Jury lover...I don‘t feel like we‘re very common 😂 5y

I love this series with Scotland Yard detective Richard Jury and the his eccentric cohorts. Great dialogue and a crazy murder mystery combine to make a satisfying story.

Pamwurtzler I like those too, but it‘s been a while since I read one. Stacked! 6y

Martha Grimes‘ Richard Jury returns in a new mystery that is every bit as clever and suspenseful as her earlier books. The plot is intriguing and features the usual cast of characters Grimes fans have come to know and love, as well as a set of streetwise, worldly children that could have come straight out of a Dickens novel. If you haven‘t read Grimes before, don‘t start here. Go back to her first, The Man With A Load of Mischief and enjoy!

AmyG I used to love these books. 6y
CarolynM Sounds good, I'll give it a try 6y
dsfisher Have it on preorder, must wait until April. 😭 6y
