Second Chance Summer
Second Chance Summer | Morgan Matson
A powerful novel about hope and heartbreak, as much about loss as it is about first love and friendship (Publishers Weekly, starred review).Sandwiched between two exceptional siblings, Taylor Edwards never felt like she stood outexcept for her history of running away when things get too complicated. Then her dad receives unexpected, terrible news, and the family makes the last-minute decision to spend the summer together in the cramped quarters at their old lake house. Taylor hasnt been to the summer house since she was twelve, and she definitely never planned on going back. Up at the lake she is confronted with people she thought she left behind, like her former best friend, Lucy, and Henry Crosby, her first crush, whos all grown upand a lot cuter. Suddenly Taylor is surrounded by memories shed rather leave in the pastbut she cant run away this time. As the days lying on the beach pass into nights gazing at the stars, Taylor realizes she has a second chancewith friends, with family, maybe even with love. But she knows that once the summer ends, there is no way to recapture what she stands to lose. From Morgan Matson, the PW Flying Start author of Amy & Rogers Epic Detour, this is a remarkable novel about hope in the face of heartbreaking grief.

“As I looked out at the water, I realized there was nowhere to go, nowhere left to run. And I just had to stay here, facing this terrible truth. I felt, as more tears fell, just how tired I was, a tiredness that had nothing to do with the hour. I was tired of running away, tired of not telling people, tired of not talking about it, tired of pretending things were ok when they had never, ever been less than ok.“ #MorganMatson #SecondChanceSummer

This was really hard to get through. It was just way too long and soooo slow. Not very much happens, the stuff that does happen mostly isn‘t high stakes enough, and the main character has the personality of a piece of cardboard, making it hard to care about her. I did like the family dynamics, especially her dad, and was sad at the ending, which keeps me from giving this a “pan.” But there are just much better YA contemps out there. 3/10 ⭐️

Day 11: Favorite Tear Jerker Book #janinbooks18
Morgan Matson is my favorite contemporary author and this book was the first book to ever make me cry while reading it. What‘s your favorite tear jerker book?

Day 25: To the beach! #augustlibrary17
Goodmorning bookworms ☀️
I'm blessed to only live 20 minutes from the beach and I can go there pretty much all year since I live in Florida. It's so hot here in August but I wouldn't trade it for the cold EVER! I notice a lot of people prefer the cold to the heat. What do you prefer?

#booknerd #ilovebooks #bookshelf #bookworm #bookaholic #books #beach #floridabeach #beachreads #florida #booksonbooksonbooks

mom2bugnbee After living in Florida for 20 years (15 of those were 20 minutes from Daytona Beach) I now prefer the cold. I live in TN, where we don't get enough snow, but at least there are seasons. I LOVE visiting FL beaches, but I no longer want to live there. The grass is always greener, right? Though your view is lovely. 🏖 2y
Jerdencon I DESPISE the cold which is a problem living in NY. I always say I could live without ever seeing snow again' 😲❄️ but since my job, family, and friends are here - here I stay! 2y
heylaurenmack I‘ve lived in Florida for 15 years and while I‘ve lived 5-10 miles from the beach the entire time I haven‘t really frequented it. Come to think of it, even when I lived in NJ‘s coast, I went more often. I‘ll be moving to Jacksonville soon so maybe I‘ll make an effort to explore the beach more. 2y

Redy2trvl I'm a 5 minute walk to the beach, and will gladly head there almost any day. I do enjoy all 4 seasons, some more than others, but I think everyone deserves 1 snow day a year. After that, I will take 65-85 every other day!!! 2y
kathedron I grew up on the coast and really miss it: it was wonderful in all weathers, though I liked it best wild and stormy! 2y
CouronneDhiver I love the cooler weather in autumn and winter... but I love to vacation in warm climates. 2y
ttrachelx I love summer but the hot weather here in England is way too stuffy and short lived. 2y
Hannahdm94 I love the weather of fall and early winter! It's my favorite!! I'm not a huge fan of the heat. But I live in Kentucky, so I get a good mix of all the seasons! 2y
kezzlou85 I prefer the heat but living in England you get used to the cold and the rain. 2y

Day 22: A book that makes you cry.
I've might have mentioned this before but I don't typically cry a lot when I read books that are sad but I cried so much during Second Chance Summer by Morgan Manson. It's a really cute summer read but also very heartfelt. I definitely recommend this book but just be prepared with some tissues. What book made you cry?

First every BookOutlet purchase..📖Thought....💭 I could use more books for the beach (will be at the beach in 2-3 weeks from now)...Ordered one middle grade and three young adult novels. I have already read Second Chance Summer by Morgan Matson, but have yet to read...This song Will Save Your Life by Lelia Sales, What Happens Now by Jennifer Castle, and A Day of Signs and Wonders by Kit Pearson. #bookoutletnewbie #beachreads Images: Google

It's easy for a book to tug at my heartstrings and make me feel emotional and sad, but it's unusual for one to make me cry. This book did exactly that. There were tears. So many tears! A personal experience of mine still feels fresh and Second Chance Summer took emotions and feelings I haven't been able to explain and put them into words beautifully. Definitely a book I won't forget.

In short, I loved this book.

It's one of those slice-of-life books, where you're essentially following the main character through her daily life.

It's about family, friendship, first love, and about making the best of the time you have now, rather than wait until it's too late.

Beautiful and heartbreaking book about family, friendship and love.
I was barely holding it together at the end. Scenes were written with such emotion that I could easily put myself in Taylor's shoes even if it made me want to cry.
Nicely written and fast paced book. Easy read.

This is one of those books that starts off "meh" and ends up blowing you away. Set in Pocono, PA (I've been there!) during summer, Taylor is all of us as a teenager. This should be required literature for all high school girls. This book gave me all the feels!

2.5 🌟 Maybe I'm burnt out on contemporary YA, but I feel like Matson's narrators come off as spoiled and self centered a lot of the time, which makes it hard to empathize with them. The love story is blech, but the parts with her father are very good and emotionally affecting.
This one is just ok.
