pickThis book was fantastic & educational to learn of this man‘s amazing life. The narrator of this version, Richard Allen, made me feel immersed in Douglass‘s narrative, as if he was reading his book to me himself. A great story of a life started in the hopeless depths of slavery, learning to read, his escape & role in emancipation, & finally Douglass‘s fight for the black suffragist movement & eventually began in the fight for women‘s suffrage, too.
Just some thoughts... Having recently completed Ibram Kendi‘s ‘Stamped from the Beginning‘, I was curious about his opinions of Frederick Douglass. Kendi comments that even Douglass becomes racist. I am starting to see this in the tagged audiobook, I am just over 1/2 trough. He has commented that he is not savage like the Indians, and how blacks don‘t need certain types of education, until they can prove themselves in the lower trades.
IN Talbot County, Eastern Shore, State of Maryland, near Easton, the county town, there is a small district of country, thinly populated, and remarkable for nothing that I know of more than for the worn-out, sandy, desert-like appearance of its soil, the general dilapidation of its farms and fences, the indigent and spiritless character of its inhabitants, and the prevalence of ague and fever.
