Balance
Balance: A Dizzying Journey Through the Science of Our Most Delicate Sense | Carol Svec
15 posts | 1 read | 14 to read
Balance is a lively, 360-degree exploration of our body's supersense. Health and wellness writer Carol Svec examines every facet of balance in a way that is highly entertaining, broadly accessible, and rigorously researched. Readers follow her through various facilities as she talks with scientists doing state-of-the-art research. She grilled an egg in a virtual kitchen, had her senses fooled in a Tumbling Room by a mannequin named Hans, survived "the Vominator" without losing her lunch, and experienced drunken dizziness inside a police muster room. Chapters include fascinating case studies of people whose lives are affected by balance dysfunction, the latest research initiatives, the coolest gadgets used by researchers, and first-person accounts of what it's like to be a scientific guinea pig for balance. In a clear, friendly style, Svec communicates what she has learned about balance from some of the top scientists in the world, including how balance research is being applied to help those who are ill, elderly, disabled, or simply prone to queasiness, and what ingenious, potentially life-changing advances may be coming down the road.

Mehso-so

This book had a lot of interesting facts, but Svec's constant use of footnotes was annoying. Not only does that ruin the continuity of the book, but the footnotes were very rarely useful. After a while, I skipped them entirely.

I could have sworn this was the motto of the Trump administration.

From the website Moviehurl.com, a site that warns viewers about films that might make them experience motion sickness.

SusanInTiburon Good knowledge! 6y
tournevis I can see how they would. This said, Beasts of the Southern Wild is such a great movie, it pains me to know some could not watch it without causing nausae or seizures. 😿 6y
DGRachel Ugh. I hated the Blair Witch Project. I went to see it because I‘m a UCF alum. I was bored stiff up until the very end, which scared the 💩out of me. 6y

Overhydration can lead to water intoxication, which has been documented to cause vertigo. Water intoxication is very rare. You would have to drink several gallons of water in a day, which is really difficult to do accidentally.

Leniverse I've been wondering about that! I thought it was just me, but it's yet another of the "sucks to get old" things. Like two day hangovers. ? 6y

I'm excited to see how it works, especially since I'm sure I'm going to be able to beat the device. I'm a tad competitive that way--I love technology, but I want to be able to control it. Machines should not (cannot!)control me. Except, of course, for my laptop, which has trained me to pay attention to it whenever I hear the ding of a new e-mail.

violabrain Wow, this is super interesting! I used to get really motion sick as a kid. I thought I outgrew it, but this describes exactly how I feel after being in a car for a long time. 6y

#TBRtemptation post 2! Tons of interesting info packed into this book from the award-winning science & health writer. Learn how: low-frequency noise can you make nauseated; your index finger can stop someone from losing balance; why observers cause you to lose balance; what's up when we get "fall down drunk". She takes a spin on "the Vominator", explores virtual reality, meets Hans the mannequin. Oh, & lots of studies. #blameLitsy #blameMrBook ?

BookInMyHands As someone who experiences positional vertigo this looks like a must read, thanks! 6y
Andrea4 My bouts of vertigo in the past, dizziness from water loading myself, and the fairly regular dizzy/lightheaded moments I have make me kind of want to read this, especially since I seem to have good balance 😞 6y
