The Selection meets The 5th Wave in this heart-racing debut duology about a girl competing for a spot on a mysterious mission to the outer reaches of space. THE RULES ARE SIMPLE: You must be gifted. You must be younger than twenty-five. You must be willing to accept the dangers that you will face if you win. Eighteen-year-old Cassandra Guptas entire life has been leading up to thisthe opportunity to travel to space. But to secure a spot on this classified mission, she must first compete against the best and brightest people on the planet. People who are as determined as she is to win a place on a journey to the farthest reaches of the universe. Cassie is ready for the toll that the competition will take; the rigorous mental and physical tests designed to push her to the brink of her endurance. But nothing could have prepared her for the bonds she would form with the very people she hopes to beat. Or that with each passing day it would be more and more difficult to ignore the feeling that the true objective of the mission is being kept from her. As the days until the launch tick down and the stakes rise higher than ever before, only one thing is clear to Cassie: shell never back down...even if it costs her everything.

It took me a little while to care about the MC in this book but I ended up liking her. This is a cool story and the ending caught me off guard. I didn‘t know it wasn‘t a stand-alone so I wasn‘t prepared to have to wait for the rest of the story. I got this book from Once Upon a Book Club and the gifts were awesome! I am going to have to add this and the one(s) that follow to my classroom bookshelf.

I decided to join the #LRC @jessberk13 because I had such fun doing a summer reading bingo with the #Seattle public library that I have to do this one! And I‘m crossing off my first square with my first read of the year, the book I finished yesterday, ‘Dare Mighty Things.‘ The young girl in the book competes and then trains to go into space on a top-secret mission for NASA, with a twist (at the end). I‘m excited to join you guys! #LRC2018

I got my first of 2018 ‘in the books‘ right before midnight last night! Set a few decades from now, a group of the brightest and the best young people compete to go into Space on a top secret mission for NASA. It centers around a girl called Cassie, a fresh kind of heroine: a smart Indian-American who has dreamed about going into Space her whole life. And it was actually a book someone bought for me! Overall, pretty good month; some great new books coming out 👍🏼

Mehso-so

This is weird to say, but this felt like a Harry Potter fanfic turned sci-fi story. I liked Cassie & her gang a lot, but the plot was slow. I didn't love the cultural representation — not because it was harmful, or ghastly (this author did some work, thankfully), but because for me personally, it felt like somebody outside of my culture was trying to relate my own experience back to me, which felt mildly irritating. Still, decent start! ★★★☆☆.

It‘s a competition to see who is fit mentally, physically, emotionally, academically to go an important space mission. They all want to be the chosen one. And then an ending I wasn‘t expecting! Great fast read.

Kristy_K Have you read Nyxia? This sounds really similar, but I didn‘t love 6y
Zbayardo Interesting! I‘ll have to check it out. 6y
