Anything Goes: A Biography of the Roaring Twenties
Anything Goes: A Biography of the Roaring Twenties | Lucy Moore
13 posts | 4 read | 4 to read
An exhilarating portrait of the era of jazz, glamour, and gangsters from a bright young star of mainstream history writing. The glitter of 1920s America was seductive, from jazz, flappers, and wild all- night parties to the birth of Hollywood and a glamorous gangster-led crime scene flourishing under Prohibition. But the period was also punctuated by momentous events-the political show trials of Sacco and Vanzetti, the huge Ku Klux Klan march down Washington DC's Pennsylvania Avenue-and it produced a dizzying array of writers, musicians, and film stars, from F. Scott Fitzgerald to Bessie Smith and Charlie Chaplin. In Anything Goes, Lucy Moore interweaves the stories of the compelling people and events that characterized the decade to produce a gripping portrait of the Jazz Age. She reveals that the Roaring Twenties were more than just "the years between wars." It was an epoch of passion and change-an age, she observes, not unlike our own.

These books deal with my favourite time period-the Jazz Age.1922 picks the year of publication of Ulysses as the fulcrum for a group biography that takes in all the movers and shakers of the time.Lucy Moore's book is a series of essays focusing on a particular aspect-Harlem, Hollywood, real estate, politics and so on,to give you a deeper context of the time.

Vansa I read them both simultaneously and that really helped-i could correlate events mentioned in 1922 with the societal underpinnings and get a nuanced perspective, far deeper than the surface glitz of the Roaring 20s. 3y

A good overview of some of the major events of the Roaring Twenties and of the celebrities and public figures we remember from that period.

1. Group biographies , romance , fantasy, sci-fi
2. Discworld, The Lord of the Rings, Tamora Pierce's Lioness quartet, Harry Potter ( though JKR has some vile views)
3. The tagged book was excellent, and India right now is quite like the 20s in the worst way, with polarisation, jingoism, an economy heading for a crash, and none of the fun of the 20s!!
Nice tag, hope you had a good weekend!
