The River of Consciousness
The River of Consciousness | Oliver Sacks
From the best-selling author of Gratitude, On the Move, and Musicophilia, a collection of essays that displays Oliver Sacks's passionate engagement with the most compelling and seminal ideas of human endeavor: evolution, creativity, memory, time, consciousness, and experience. Oliver Sacks, a scientist and a storyteller, is beloved by readers for the extraordinary neurological case histories (Awakenings, An Anthropologist on Mars) in which he introduced and explored many now familiar disorders--autism, Tourette's syndrome, face blindness, savant syndrome. He was also a memoirist who wrote with honesty and humor about the remarkable and strange encounters and experiences that shaped him (Uncle Tungsten, On the Move, Gratitude). Sacks, an Oxford-educated polymath, had a deep familiarity not only with literature and medicine but with botany, animal anatomy, chemistry, the history of science, philosophy, and psychology. The River of Consciousness is one of two books Sacks was working on up to his death, and it reveals his ability to make unexpected connections, his sheer joy in knowledge, and his unceasing, timeless project to understand what makes us human.

My first Oliver Sacks. I really enjoyed these small snippets into various scientific fields studied by the author. Darwin, evolution, time, speed, the nature of scientific discoveries, medical diagnoses, and more in easy-to-digest and entertaining chapters. I will never look at Tourette's syndrome the same way again. Fascinating. Also, I listened to the #audiobook which was nicely done.

Palimpsest @Chelsea.Poole is that plant a kind of fern or something else? I love it. 4y
Chelsea.Poole @Palimpsest thank you! It's a lemon button fern. My mom just got it for me for Easter. And I believe it actually came from Walmart! 4y
Palimpsest @Chelsea.Poole thank you so much for responding! I‘m going to look for it. 😊 4y

Newest read this morning! #nonfiction
My first read from Oliver Sacks, though he's been on my list for a long time.
Also, my first time making anything with my sourdough starter 🥰🥖
These are crumpets and they are good, but would have been better if I would have had the proper tins to make them in. Still proud though! Happy little #bookandbreakfast

Grabbed these quickly from the library before closing last week for #quarantinereading
These seemed like the perfect books to read right now. Making my way through some other things I've started to get to these two beauties. 🌿🌊

fleeting I loved both! 4y

Wow! Stunning! These essays blew me away! Oliver Sacks‘ last book was my first read of his, but it won‘t be MY last! Meditations on history, health, memory, medicine, consciousness and more. Sacks shares a lifetime of curiosity, experience, and synthesis with his readers. I‘m hooked. Hopelessly hooked!

I know #justtherightbook gets a bad rap for being expensive, but the service costs less than $10 when you discount the price of the book. Shipping is included in the fee. This is my third book from Just The Right Book and it was literally in my hold cue@at the library! I can‘t tell you how many times I eyed it at the bookstore. So they are basically reading my mind now! I‘m so excited to read this book!

emilyhaldi I ❤️ Oliver Sacks! Haven‘t heard much about this one, hope it‘s good 😄 6y

A short essay collection that makes us feel the loss of an Oliver Sacks very keenly. He loved science and scientific advances in all fields. The collection is a too eclectic to be as wonderful as The Man Who Mistook His Wife For a Hat. The essays on Darwin aren‘t that interesting but for essays that focus more particularly on neuroscience and the brain, especially “Scotoma: Forgetting and Neglect in Science” his love and passion shine through.
