Trust No Aunty | Maria Qamar
16 posts | 14 read | 19 to read
Based on her popular Instagram @Hatecopy and her experience in a South Asian immigrant family, artist Maria Qamar has created a humorous, illustrated survival guide to deal with overbearing Aunties, whether theyre family members, annoying neighbors, or just some random ladies throwing black magic your way. Weve all experienced interference from our Auntiesthey are at family parties and friendly get-togethers, finding ways to make your life difficult, trying to get you to marry their sons, and telling you to lose weight while simultaneously feeding you a second dinnerand it has stunted our social growth and embarrassed us in front of our friends and cool cousins for years. This tongue-in-cheek guide is full of advice designed to help you manage Aunty meddling and encourages you to pursue your passionsfrom someone who has been through it all. Qamar confesses to throwing sweatshirts over crop-tops to get out of the house without being questioned, hiding her boyfriend in a closet, and enduring overbearing parents endless pressuring her to become a doctor, lawyer, or engineer. Holding onto your cultural identity is tough. Always interfering Aunties make it even harder. But ultimately, Aunties keep our lives interesting. As an Aunty-survivor and a woman who has lived the cross-cultural experience, Qamar defied the advice of her aunties almost every step of the way, and she is here to remind you: Trust No Aunty.

Another good #24in48 pick. This was a quick read that was insightful, if a bit uneven. I‘m still not a huge graphic novel fan, but it cleanses my palate and entertained.

Debiw781 😂😂 that panel gave me a good laugh. Thanks for sharing it! 2y

I thought this would be a fun read for #24in48. We‘ll see. I struggle with graphic novels. But this one starts off with a quote by Yeezy so I think it‘s written for me. 😂😂✌🏻

Sydsavvy Looks good though! 2y

I loved the artwork in this! It‘s a quick funny read for anyone with overbearing family. It is body positive and feminist. 3.5 ⭐️

Reggie Lol now that I‘m older it‘s the other way around. The parents weren‘t home when I called at 11p.m. And then I sent them a txt asking if they were staying at a friends house or needed a ride home. They both sent back lol‘s. 2y

I thought it was a graphic novel but it ended up being more like those joke books? Some fun info graphics and gimmicks.

"I was sixteen, and I only cared about a boy when he brought me food." Aaaaaahhhhh this book is the best.

I'm loving this book a lot! It's incredibly relatable in a lot of ways. The art and text is fabulous and is one of those books that makes one feel better about life and their "bad life decision" to not go into/ get the hell out of corporate hell.

As soon as I saw this "tongue-in-cheek guide" to surviving South Asian aunties I jokingly asked my Indian boyfriend to get me a copy. Because he knows the best way to my heart is books, and he knows his family, he complied ? ? ? it was a great read.

What's great about Trust No Aunty is how unapologetically desi it is. Its audience is the young desi who is probably straddling two cultures (their parent's and their own in the West) but those of us outside of that experience will still find it entertaining thanks to Qamar's humour and beautiful artwork (haven't seen the finished copy but I'm excited!). As a Somali-Canadian, I found some cultural similarities as well. 🤗
