Waking Up in Eden
Waking Up in Eden: In Pursuit of an Impassioned Life on an Imperiled Island | Lucinda Fleeson
4 posts | 3 read | 7 to read
Like so many of us, Lucinda Fleeson wanted to escape what had become a routine life. So, she quit her big-city job, sold her suburban house, and moved halfway across the world to the island of Kauai to work at the National Tropical Botanical Garden. Imagine a one-hundred-acre garden estate nestled amid ocean cliffs, rain forests, and secluded coves. Exotic and beautiful, yes, but as Fleeson awakens to this sensual world, exploring the island's food, beaches, and history, she encounters an endangered paradisethe Hawaii we don't see in the tourist brochures. Native plants are dying at an astonishing rateHawaii is called the Extinction Capital of the Worldand invasive species (plants, animals, and humans) have imperiled this Garden of Eden. Fleeson accompanies a plant hunter into the rain forest to find the last of a dying species, descends into limestone caves with a paleontologist who deconstructs island history through fossil life, and shadows a botanical pioneer who propagates rare seeds, hoping to reclaim the landscape. Her grown-up adventure is a reminder of the value of choosing passion over security, individuality over convention, and the pressing need to protect the earth. And as she witnesses the island's plant renewal efforts, she sees her own life blossom again.

Thanks @Eggs for the #TLT #ThreeListThursday tag! 🤗

Hard to narrow it down to 3 but:

1️⃣ The tagged book is set in Kauai & I love the combo of memoir, science/plants & history. 🌺

2️⃣ The View From the Cheap Seats-Neil Gaiman essays, many about writing & books—what‘s not to love? ✍️🖤

3️⃣ I‘ll Be Gone in the Dark: Amazing true crime (I had to read it in daylight) but the whole story around Michelle McNamara & the Golden State Killer, wow! 😱

Eggs You‘re welcome ☺️ 3w
dabbe You've given me even more to explore! Thanks for sharing. 💚💙💚 3w

#ReadingResolutions #BookAndNature 🌳🌴🍄🌺

It was humid and hazy this weekend, so aside from some patio sitting--giving Max some yard time, I didn't spend much time with a book and nature. Instead I have two non-fiction books about nature. I'm currently reading The Plant Messiah and the tagged book is a personal favorite--about a woman who moves to Kauai to work at the National Tropical Botanical Garden. Both are interesting reads. 🌺🌿

Crazeedi These both look interesting! I'm a *plant devotee*😍 6y

#JuneTunz #laislabonita All the Hawaiian islands have their own beauty, but my vote for ' la isla bonita' is Kauai, aka 'The Garden Isle.' 🌺Waking Up in Eden is non-fiction about a woman who moves to Kauai to work for the National Tropical Botanical Gardens. It's like a trip to Kauai-a mix of travel & adventure with a good dose of history & the science & politics of native plant extinction. A favorite + 3 more Kauai-set books both read & #TBR. 🌺
