Live from New York: An Uncensored History of Saturday Night Live
Live from New York: An Uncensored History of Saturday Night Live | Tom Shales
Just in time for the 40th anniversary of "Saturday Night Live," a rollickingly updated edition of LIVE FROM NEW YORK with nearly 100 new pages covering the past decade. When first published to celebrate the 30th anniversary of "Saturday Night Live," LIVE FROM NEW YORK was immediately proclaimed the best book ever produced on the landmark and legendary late-night show. In their own words, unfiltered and uncensored, a dazzling galaxy of trail-blazing talents recalled three turbulent decades of on-camera antics and off-camera escapades. Now a fourth decade has passed---and bestselling authors James Andrew Miller and Tom Shales have returned to Studio 8H. Over more than 100 pages of new material, they raucously and revealingly take the SNL story up to the present, adding a constellation of iconic new stars, surprises, and controversies.

#NoFemmeber #NonFictionNovember Day 9... #DebbieDowner debuted on Saturday Night Live In 2004. Her character‘s name quickly found its way into mainstream culture. If you weren‘t the life of the party you were a #DebbieDowner #WahWaaaaaaaaaah BTW: book looks awesome 😎

BarbaraBB I don‘t know her but I do know her kind 🤣 6y
erzascarletbookgasm I don‘t know her either 6y
Cathythoughts Very interesting.. I never heard of her either ... 👍🏻👍🏻❤️ 6y

Cinfhen It MUST be a US thing...her segments on SNL were hugely popular 🙌🏻and VERY relatable @BarbaraBB @erzascarletbookgasm @Cathythoughts 6y
TrishB @BarbaraBB @erzascarletbookgasm @Cathythoughts @Cinfhen I was about to say the same! Thought it was just me (which wouldn‘t be a surprise!) 6y

Cinfhen Not yet but I have it on my TBR @hermyknee ❤️ she‘s hilarious @batsy 6y
emilyhaldi Debbie Downer is the best!!! One of the only SNL skits I actually like. (just not my humor...) 6y
Billypar Now I'm second guessing how much of Debbie I've actually seen, versus just bring familiar with. I stopped watching SNL in the early 2000s and missed a lot I think! 6y
Megabooks I remember Debbie Downer! Now I have her Ruby Tuesday‘s ads going through my head. 🤪🤪🤪 6y

The more I read about the early days of SNL, the more convinced i am of the fact that Lorne Michaels was kind of a douche.

SNL has been rather hit or miss (with more misses) over the last few years, so I tend to DVR the season and catch up on the few funny clips over the summer. I've been doing just that, and that's why this book came to mind. #itshistory #anditsaugust

Timehop told me that one year ago today, I voted in the primaries. That reminded me of this cold open of SNL after the November election, when Kate McKinnon, as Hillary Clinton, sang #Hallelujah.

It seems like the longest election season ever is turning into the longest presidency ever. When will our long, national nightmare end?

Jess_Read_This Agree! This was a great skit too... 7y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa I know! One of the newspeople yesterday mentioned how long this Presidency has been, 4, almost 5 months....that's it, and it feels like years. Plus all the talk of 2020, and the fact that I still see political ads... it's like the Presidential election that never ends. 7y
Nat_Reads I'm so frustrated. Just keep voting just keep voting (and crying) 7y

Notafraidofwords Ahhhh!!! It's an emotional roller coaster. 7y
Redjewel_7734 It's definitely a bad time right now, & it's scary to think where & in what shape the US will be by the end of his term. I just don't know how we got to the point that this is the administration we have. Living in E KY, I know a lot of Republicans and people who support the cheeto & overall this admin does not represent who they are. They are better than this. I just don't know why they can't see that. 7y

Pickpick

I stopped watching Saturday Night Live sometime in the 90's. At first I just gradually lost interest, when I was working a lot, sometimes until 1:00 or 1:30 in the morning. Then I made a conscious decision to stop watching because I had young kids and I felt like the show was no longer funny, it was just raunch. But after reading this fascinating book I now feel very nostalgic and want to go back and watch from the very beginning.

I never really watched Saturday Night Live after the original cast left, but I'm still wondering how did I not ever know that Julia Louis-Dreyfus had been a cast member?

If you can handle the #truth, here's a selection of great non-fiction from my shelves (and one I just got from the library)

When I'm doing a movie and it has a particular type of scene, I always imagine it being made fun of on Saturday Night Live. - Robert De Niro.

I usually only stay up this late if I'm reading a really good book. But Lin-Manuel is the host tonight! And he's so good!!😂

BookishFeminist 😭😭😭 I cried from laughing so hard. Not only was LMM amazing, but Alec Baldwin as trump is perfection. 8y
LauraBeth One of the best SNLs in years 😀 8y
angrylilasian @BookishFeminist OMG Alec Baldwin was even better than Tina Fey as Sarah Palin! I died 😂 8y
angrylilasian @LauraBeth It was totally worth staying up late for. 😆 8y
BookishFeminist @angrylilasian Right?!?! SO ACCURATE. I nearly died laughing last week after his impression but this week was even better!! 😂😂😂 8y
