Gena and Finn would have never met but for their mutual love for the popular show Up Below. Regardless of their differencesGena is a recent high school graduate whose social life largely takes place online, while Finn is in her early twenties, job hunting and contemplating marriage with her longtime boyfriendthe two girls realize that the bond between them transcends fanfiction. When disaster strikes and Gena's world turns upside down, only Finn can save her, and that, too, comes with a price. Told through emails, text messages, journal entries, and blog posts, Gena/Finn is a story of friendship and love in the digital age.

Picked this book up because it was epistolary. Thought it would be a breeze read about friendship. While not triggering for me, marking it so-so instead of pick because it should come with content warnings on the book - mental health, and PTSD, at minimum.

I also didn't really connect with the characters, but I feel that's because I don't read fan fic/ not part of a fandom

Well, this is a #MonthofRereads change of heart. I had so-so feelings about this YA epistolary novel that follows two fans of a fictional TV show as their bond grows and then gets torn apart by a tragic accident.

This time, I absolutely adored it. I can‘t pick out exactly what changed, but I would now recommend this book, especially if your a fangirl/boy or like epistolary novels. 4.5⭐️

Sometimes I get in a mood where I just need epistolary novels/books. I vaguely remember reading this book for my short-lived blog. I think I gave it 3⭐️🤷🏻‍♀️

Anyway, if anyone has suggestions of epistolary books, I‘d love to see them in the comments 💙💙

Well-ReadNeck When Washington Was in Vogue - Edward Christopher Williams. This one has a great backstory, too. A Student writing a thesis was researching magazines from the Harlem renaissance and inadvertently got hooked on this novel told as a serial. He brought it to publishers attention and it was published (in the early 2000‘s, I think) in its entirety for the first time. 5y
kgriffith Code Name Verity is one of my favorites. Also Where‘d You Go, Bernadette? 5y
Megabooks @Well-ReadNeck That is such an interesting backstory! I‘ll have to see if my library has a physical copy because there‘s only an audiobook online. Thanks!! (edited) 5y

Megabooks @kgriffith I had forgotten Bernadette was epistolary. I‘ve read a lot of good things about Verity. I‘ll check it out! Thanks!! 5y
BarbaraJean The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society (if you haven‘t read it already!) and 84 Charing Cross Road. Both are deliciously bookish and sweet and wonderful. Ella Minnow Pea by Mark Dunn is also a lot of fun! 5y
Megabooks @BarbaraJean I haven‘t read any of those!! Thanks 😊📚 5y
Megabooks @Lindy That is a great book! I just read it again. Definitely still funny the second time. 😁👍🏻 5y

Wow. Not the fluffy read I was expecting! The description said "Gena's life gets turned upside down," - understatement! Although weightier subject matter is hinted at from almost the start, I still didn't see the tears coming ?There's not a clean wrap up at the end, but that sense of unfinished things fits the tone of the story and it's ending. I expected this to be a one, maybe two time read, but it's now on my perennial list!

hyacinth Wow, I really like this cover of If I Was Your Girl!! Makes it hard to pick just one version to get haha. 7y
Alicia @hyacinth I know! I've become obsessed with Book Depository because I love the U.K. Editions. I like this one so much more than the US version. 7y

I enjoyed this, but it seemed to have a non-ending, and the plot didn't really go anywhere. Was it enjoyable? Yes. Was it a good story? Yes. Did I feel satisfied or completed at the end? No. So good story, meh ending.

Any book that promises a loving view of Fandom immediately goes onto my TBR list. Not only did this book not disappoint, it utilized an unconventional format (blog posts, private messages, text messages, etc.) to deepen understanding of the two main characters. Very quick and enjoyable read that did NOT go in the direction I was expecting.

It was pretty meh for me. Started well but fizzled quite a bit. I adore stories that are written in documents--like compiled texts, emails, documents, etc., and it worked quite well for the beginning of this book, but went off the rails a bit towards the end. Also did not care for the treatment/no treatment of mental health issues and lack of development of secondary relationships. Would give it a pass probably.

I enjoyed it a lot and the story reminded me a bit of me and my best friend. However I'm mad for this having been marketed of it being a love story between the two. I'm fine that it wasn't but it sucks being lied to.

I'm struggling with this book. Maybe because I've lived this? Falling in love with my best friend while in a long term relationship with a man. I think I'm letting that affect me. Pros: fun layout, story moves quickly, each girl has a distinct voice, info gets dropped on you and you're like WHOA. Cons: not big into fanfic, the ending was a "wait what", the surface was scratched of falling in love with your bff but not deep enough. (Notmypic)

A sweet, fun book. It's about two girls meeting and bonding online over their shared fandom of a TV show. The story is told entirely through text messages, journal entries, etc which was pretty neat. The ending was a bit off, I think I wanted just a little more resolution. Overall, a pic. If you like this you may also like Rainbow Rowell's Fangirl and Attachments, both I adored and highly recommend.

I'm so disappointed. I was really enjoying this book but it took a turn that got too unbelievable for me and I just...didn't get it! I am genuinely confused. I don't know. So bummed. Wah.

3🌟The best part of the book for me was the format. I loved the blog posts, emails, and texts. The story isn't sticking with me, though. I remember the general outline, enjoying it, and disliking the ending. Overall, I'm glad I read it, but I don't really recommend it. Odd review, I know.

courtney What is it about email/journal/blog excerpts in books that makes them so fun to read?? Have you read Attachments by Rainbow Rowell? 8y
Megabooks OMG, I loved Attachments. I can't decide if that or Fangirl is my fav Rowell! 8y
courtney @Ebooksandcooks I can't even pick a favorite of like...any of her books. They all made me cry in different ways 😂 8y
Megabooks @courtney 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👊🏻👊🏻👊🏻😂😓😭🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 8y
JessReads This is pretty much how I felt about it. The format was great, but the plot had some holes, the characters were uneven, and the ending was not satisfying. That said, I didn't dislike reading it! 🙃 8y
