Rise and Shine, Benedict Stone
Rise and Shine, Benedict Stone | Phaedra Patrick
25 posts | 19 read | 36 to read
Phaedra Patrick's debut novel, The Curious Charms of Arthur Pepper, was hailed as "poignant" and "utterly endearing." Now she returns with Rise and Shine, Benedict Stone, a gem of a novel about family, forgiveness and one man's second chance at happiness. Moonstone for empathy. Azurite for memories. Lapis lazuli for truth... In the quiet village of Noon Sun, Benedict Stone has settled into a complacent and predictable routine. Business at his jewelry shop has dried up; his marriage is on the rocks. His life is in desperate need of a jump start... And then a surprise arrives at his door. Gemma is Benedict's audacious teenage niece--the daughter of his estranged brother, Charlie. The two Stone brothers had a falling out and haven't spoken in almost two decades, since Charlie left for America. Reckless and stubborn, Gemma invites herself into Benedict's world and turns his orderly life upside down. But she might just be exactly what he needs to get his life back on track... Filled with colorful characters and irresistible charm, Rise and Shine, Benedict Stone is a luminous reminder of the unbreakable bonds of family, and shows that having someone to embrace life with is always better than standing on your own.

PROMPT: JEWELRY

I thoroughly enjoyed Benedict and felt sorry for him as he worked through living without his wife. His JEWELRY shop and their love just hadn't been enough for them after they were unable to have children after eight years.

A heartwarming read about family and about trying new things.

An uplifting read.

This is such an enjoyable book!
The characters are so interesting , and relateable.
The whole story is so sad and sweet.
Even the cover on this edition is beautiful, just love the bright, and quirky illustration.
Another wonderful find at my fave bookstore, Cover To Cover, in Riverview, NB :)

In the quiet village of Noon Sun, Benedict is leading a quiet life, too quiet. His wife moved out, his jewelry business is drying up, and he's aging without a child to make him a Dad. His sad life desperately needs an intervention. Gemma, a teenage niece, the daughter of his estranged brother, turns up on his doorstep with troubles of her own. Filled with colorful characters, this novel hails family, forgiveness, and second chances.

#Bookreport #WeeklyForecast #Mashup. Rise & Shine was not bad but a teenage girl is A) not going through life without a phone and B) not traveling across the pond to land on an uncle‘s doorstep, particularly one who you probably know very little about. I am pretty good at suspending belief but this was implausible to say the least. 2🌟

Should finish Stella and Summer this week and make some progress on Too Much.

Cinfhen Ugh, I hate WEAK plot devices/ where we are meant to totally suspend belief just to drive the story forward 🙄 4y

#Bookreport #WeeklyForecast. The Last Train to Key West wrapped up her trilogy and I liked it better than the 2nd one. 3.5 🌟 Can‘t give it 4 stars as one plot point didn‘t ring for me. Both Silverswift and The Spook were enjoyable 3🌟 reads. My brother loaned me Red Sky but it is dreary and depressing and I am not in the mood so back on the shelf it goes. My current reads are an interesting mix but other than P & P nothing is extraordinary.

Deblovestoread @Cinfhen Cindy, I hope you don‘t mind my combining the two reports into one...I never thought to ask before. I love that you do this. Between #bookreport and @TheAromaofBooks #bookspin my reading is a little more focused and actually more enjoyable, so thank you. 💜 4y
Cinfhen I love the mashup! I think it works better for lots of people💛and I‘m glad it keeps you focused 😊also it‘s interesting that your best book was written over 150 years ago🙌🏻 4y
TheAromaofBooks I've been surprised at how having a Weekly Forecast/Book Report has really helped me to stay on track with what I'm reading. Glad BookSpin is helping, too!!! 4y

This was my third, but the author's first, book. I enjoy the characters she creates. It was an enjoyable read, not fully a pick, but not so-so.

⭐️⭐️⭐️: Perfect if you‘re looking for a palate cleanser, with a focus on gemstones which was interesting.

This was a sweet book, but a big of a slog to get through. Gemma is an absolute BRAT for 16 years old. I don't know if this a gross overstatement in character or if I should be worried for my own teenage daughter in 13 years. 😧

Finished listening to this happy little book today. If you liked Phaedra Patrick‘s debut (tagged in the comments), you need to check this one out. If you‘re looking for a sweet story about family and finding your truth, give this one a try. The audiobook‘s narrator doesn‘t do the best female voices, but I didn‘t find that it detracted too much from the story overall.

Sills I read Arthur Pepper and wanted to read this book too-on my list👍 6y
megt @Sills I completely missed that she had a second book out. I just happened to stumble across it in my library‘s audiobook offerings. I hope you enjoy it when you get a chance to pick it up! (edited) 6y

Finishing this one with #MiaCat , our eldest, on my lap.

Crystalblu Love those sweet tuxedo kitties 😻 7y
Johanna414 How many cats do you have? We are thinking of adopting a 4th, but our three current cats really loved each other and I'm afraid adding another will disrupt the good household dynamics 7y
WanderingBookaneer @Johanna414 : We have 8 indoor cats. Dynamic always changes when new one is introduced, but it's mostly good. 7y

This heart warming book definitely falls into the category of feel-good fiction which I happen to love, especially between other heavier books. Things to love about it:
* Great characters, flawed but likeable
* Set in small town near moors in England
* Funny, sweet, but also food for thought
* Each chapter title is the name of a gemstone and the meanings of the stones are listed below...a fun addition and central to the story
* Engaging writing
