Join 12-year-old Tash and her best friend Sam in a story of adventure, survival and hope, set in the vivid Himalayan landscape of Tibet and India. Filled with friendship, love and courage, this young girl's thrilling journey to save her parents is an ideal read for children aged 9-12. There are two words that are banned in Tibet. Two words that can get you locked in prison without a second thought. I watch the soldiers tramping away and call the words after them. 'Dalai Lama.' Tash has to follow many rules to survive in Tibet, a country occupied by Chinese soldiers. But when a man sets himself on fire in protest and soldiers seize Tash's parents, she and her best friend Sam must break the rules. They are determined to escape Tibet - and seek the help of the Dalai Lama himself in India. And so, with a backpack of Tash's father's mysterious papers and two trusty yaks by their side, their extraordinary journey across the mountains begins.

A solid adventure tale of two children who ferry a secret message from the resistance in Tibet, across the mountains, to the exile community in India. I‘m not sure which major rebellion played out here, as Tibet has been fighting Chinese rule since the 1950s, but this was still a good story. Soneela Nankani is not my favorite audiobook narrator, though. 🤷🏻‍♀️ #readingasia2021 #tibet

Librarybelle This one has lots of love on Litsy! 2y
DGRachel @Librarybelle It‘s not my favorite book by any means, but it wasn‘t bad and it was a short audiobook to knock off a prompt. I‘m SO close to finishing. So close. 2y
Librarybelle Yay!! Good luck! 2y

BarbaraBB How many books do you have left? I need to read three more to finish the challenge 🤞🏽 2y
DGRachel @BarbaraBB I have 8, including the bridge country of Russia. If I get through all 8, I will have completed the Asia-only, plus the 3 bridge countries. ☺️ 2y
BarbaraBB Wow that is so good! I don‘t do the bridge countries this year - read them for Europe last year. 2y
DGRachel @BarbaraBB It‘s been a couple of years since I did any challenges beyond a MountTBR challenge, so I didn‘t do the Europe challenge and kind of felt like I HAD to do the bridge countries to do this challenge right. 😩 So close, though. Soooo close. Maldives may trip me up, though. Options are limited and Dhon Hiyala is such a slog. (edited) 2y
BarbaraBB I read an easy one for Maldives, maybe you can get that one? 2y
BarbaraBB Although Dhon Hiyala is free and short I notice online. 2y
DGRachel @BarbaraBB Short and free is why I started Dhon Hiyala. It‘s just so bad, IMO. I‘m about 1/3 of the way through and I think I‘ve been reading it for two weeks. 🤦🏻‍♀️ 2y
BarbaraBB Oh no! I bailed on a few books and will still count them for the challenge since I think I deserve that 😜. 2y
DGRachel @BarbaraBB I think if you create the challenge you totally get to make the rules. I‘m at the point where I‘ve read/listened to some really awful stuff and I will not let the remaining countries crush me. 🤣🤣 So, I‘m forcing my way through. 2y
BarbaraBB Kudos for you! Are you in for Reading Africa next year?!?!?! 2y
DGRachel @BarbaraBB I‘m definitely considering it! I‘m just a little worried that my only options for some countries are going to be heavily genocide-focused, and I‘m not sure I can handle that. But, yeah. I don‘t know who I think I‘m kidding. This has been such a great challenge, I‘m totally on board with Reading Africa. 😍 2y
BarbaraBB I‘m so happy to hear that. I know what you mean about the genocide ones (I actually have one already for #Rwanda). I hope to find a mix of historical and contemporary fiction. 2y

This book is honestly so sweet and heartbreaking at the same time. I won an ARC copy from Goodreads and didn't realize how much this little story would open my mind to other people's plights. I have a newfound respect for the people of Tibet who escaped to pursue their religious freedom. And all from a cute little middle grade book. Love it! It's available starting May 1st!

Running from Tibet with yaks to seek out the Dalai Lama in exile? Yes please. A quick breezy read set in a difficult time. Not something I'd usually pick up but I was intrigued by the unusual setting.
