I started this on kindle years ago but gave up. I tried it again on audio for book club and it was okay. I couldn‘t stop thinking about the man‘s son who he left alone and grieving. Low pick.

This week I‘ve had the opportunity to visit a cousin who‘s been teaching in a dual language village school in Alaska for several years. She shared the essay “In Quinhagak” from this book. It details the writer‘s visit to a village where an archaeological dig is working to preserve a 500 year old village in the same area of Alaska before it‘s washed away by the sea. It was fascinating to read and see details similar to the village where she lives.

jitteryjane724 How wonderful that you could visit! What a cool experience. 3mo
Daisey @jitteryjane724 It was great in so many ways! 3mo

An interesting historical fictional novel set in the 18th century in China. The characters were quite interesting. The explanations of many different aspects of life, such as religion. I liked the main character Li Du, was a librarian and very intelligent. He has wisdom to share. 4/5⭐️

Nonfiction about an expedition to kayak the Tsangpo Gorge in Tibet. It‘s a wild story and about more than just the river.

is a compelling and thought-provoking exploration of Tibet‘s history, politics, and culture. Unlike romanticized Western portrayals, French presents a nuanced perspective, blending personal travel experiences with historical analysis. He delves into Tibet‘s past, including its Buddhist traditions, and the impact of Chinese rule, offering a balanced yet deeply human account.

Flying to China, an airplane crashes in #Nepal. Tintin‘s friend Chang was on the plane and can‘t be found. So Tintin, cute little Snowy his dog, and his buddy the Captain head to the Himalayan Mountains to try to find Chang. Most of this early version of a graphic novel happens in Nepal so I think a small part happens in Tibet solely for the alliteration of the title. This was the first time I‘ve read Tintin even though my husband has all of ⬇️

Texreader them. Snowy is unbelievably cute and the story can be laugh out loud funny. A bit dated given it was written in the 1950s but nothing too offensive. I enjoyed it immensely and it won‘t be my last Tintin book. #foodandlit @Catsandbooks 6mo

Let‘s be clear, this is not a horror story. It‘s a thriller. Try climbing the world‘s highest mountain when you are being chased by killers. Jake Perry writes his memoir about his epic climb in 1924. It reads like nonfiction as he goes through the details of planning for the climb, and the narrator is perfect for this task. But the “thrilling” part of the book starts about halfway through it when gruesome murders start happening. I found the ⬇️

Texreader detail very interesting, as I do with nonfiction books when told and narrated well as here. To me, there were only a couple of heart-stopping moments in the book and that‘s ok. There‘s several mysteries going on as well, with a young American Jake not understanding the bigger picture of the years between the Great War and whatever was going to happen next, until he lives through WWII. If this book is indicative of Simmons‘ books, I‘ll read more. 6mo
Texreader #foodandlit #Nepal (only mentioned occasionally) @Catsandbooks I couldn‘t resist adding little audiobook guy climbing the mountain!! (edited) 6mo
