The Luster of Lost Things | Sophie Chen Keller
10 posts | 8 read | 9 to read
A fablelike debut for readers of Mark Haddons The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time and Rebecca Makkais The Borrower, in which a boy with an uncanny ability to find lost objects must embark on his most important search yet in order to save his mothers enchanted dessert shop, the only place hes ever called home. Theres only one place in the world that lonely twelve-year-old Walter Lavender Jr. feels at home: The Lavenders, his mothers unusual West Village dessert shop, where meringues scud through displays like clouds, marzipan dragons breathe actual fire, and the airy angel food cake can make customers pounds lighter. When the mysterious and magical Book at the heart of the shop vanishes and a landlord threatens closure, its up to Walter to find the Book and save the shop. Despiteor because ofa communication disorder that renders him speechless and friendless, Walter has a special ability to find lost things. In fact, the only thing hes failed to find is his father, a pilot lost in a presumed plane crash at sea before Walter was born. Accompanied by Milton, his best friend and overweight golden retriever, Walters quest will take him around and under New York City, into subway tunnels and soaring over Central Park, from bottle collecting in Chinatown to racing through the Met, and introduce him to the extraordinary and forgotten people of this fantastical city. Along the way he will discover his voice and learn what it means to truly be found. From the Hardcover edition.

WOW! What a great read. I got this in the mail, and have been putting it off because I know nothing about it. I realized yesterday that I only have three days left this month to read it. So I set off to reading it last night, and had a hard time putting it down. Walter, his dog and Ruby are such compelling characters. And to see Walter grow so much over the course of this book :) I listened to the audio, and I am glad I did.

My choice for #lmpbc round 8. A little bit of a slow burn but a story with so many touching moments. I don‘t want to give too much away but all of the little pieces add up at the end and made it a worthwhile read. Hopefully the ladies in my group thing so as well. It was mailed out today and should be there on Tuesday

Do you have any pets? Today is #nationalloveyourpetday so here is a picture of one of my ferrets with some dog books. I do not have a dog. I really want a dog. But I do love my sweet ferrets, including my crazy little Jude, the adorable model in this photo.

Mrs_B I‘d love to have a dog too. Your ferret is adorable! 4y
abookishbutterfly @Mrs_B It seems right to say “thanks” but I bear no responsibility for his cuteness. 😂 Is there any particular breed you want? I‘m partial to pugs but I do love all the canines! 4y
Mrs_B I would love a border collie - but our current jobs mean we couldn‘t be around for one as much as we‘d need to be. Maybe one day! Pugs are adorable and make the funniest noises! How many ferrets do you have? 4y
abookishbutterfly @Mrs_B We have 5 hours right now. We had 6 for several years but my little Elliot passed away in September. Despite how long it‘s been, I still try to count for six when looking for them. Old habits die hard. I hope your “one day” for a border collie does come! 4y
Nute So cute! 4y

Finally grabbed one from my stack of books I meant to read a year or two ago but never got around to reading! Not bad — quirky with magical realism. I think people who enjoyed The curious incident of the dog in the night time will like this one. A couple things prevent this from being a good middle grade book and keep it grown-up, but I think it might have been better had the author intended and written it for kids.

You may already know that you can find some awesome books from The Dollar Tree! Let me tell you about the ten great books I recently found there! https://youtu.be/DY-9lj2b1Y8 #booktube #bookhaul #newbooks #tbrstack

EadieB @Butterflyamore Nice book haul from Dollar Tree! I‘ll have to check out my Dollar Tree Store! 5y

EadieB @Butterflyamore I know all about that! When my children were out on their own and I had time to read, I wanted my own library. I would go to library sales and thrift stores never paying over $1.00 for a book. Through the years I ended up buying 10,000 books. I logged them in so I know how many I had. I have been sifting them down and have 5,000 now. I have very good self control now because my TBR pile is enormous! lol 5y
abookishbutterfly @EadieB I hope I develop better self-control at some point! I don‘t think I‘ve hit your number (yet) but I‘ve gotten so out of hand! Haha! I go to a lot of great sales, too, and my husband is such an enabler! We end up putting so many books in our storage room so out of sight, out of mind. My brain seems to think I don‘t have enough books but I‘m really just overwhelming myself! 5y
EadieB @Butterflyamore I know! I feel the same way! I have to stop getting so many library books too because I need to read my own books! 5y
abookishbutterfly @EadieB The life of a book addict is tough! 5y
EadieB @Butterflyamore Especially as I have overwhelmed my husband too and have to keep most of my books in our spare bedroom. He retired 12/31/18 so I have given him some good books to read and he is a bit more agreeable as he knows I am getting rid of some. 5y

Another convention, another audiobook.

So far I'm enjoying the magical realism and all the discussions of yummy sounding desserts. I'll be sorry to pause the book once we're cleared to start unloading.

Shley9225 Nice owlcrate bag in the corner there! 5y
GondorGirl @Shley9225 That's my go-to show bag. It's light, almost indescribable, and pocket holds my headphones without then getting tangled in everything else. 😁 5y

What an impressive debut novel!! This is a truly beautiful, magical story that blew me away!! While it doesn't circumnavigate the globe, it goes #AroundTheWorld on #NewYorkCity in a delightful and profound way! @Tiffy_Reads
