This Side of Paradise is the debut novel by F. Scott Fitzgerald. Published in 1920 and taking its title from a line of Rupert Brooke's poem Tiare Tahiti, the book examines the lives and morality of post-World War I youth. Its protagonist, Amory Blaine, is an attractive Princeton University student who dabbles in literature. The novel explores the theme of love warped by greed and status seeking.

Pickpick

Fitzgerald‘s first novel, this is the semiautobiographical story of the handsome, indulged, and idealistic Princeton student Amory Blaine. It read more like a series of related essays than a novel and you can tell that Fitzgerald was still fairly unpolished as a writer, but his brilliance and promise still shines through.

... Hurried to the refreshment of a shower that would have to serve in the place of sleep

"anyone with an imagination is bound to be afraid".

"we're hundreds of years before the time when non resistance can touch us as a reality" referencing the German invasion of Belgium. Taking a back office war post was considered weak and lazy - would the same be the case now?

Did I say no more book buying this month? Me?! Well I got a bit of a bonus at work this week and I told myself I was allowed to spend a little of it on something fun. #obviously that meant books. My first order came in. I keep telling myself I don't need the entire set of Fitzgeralds but I know I will end up with them all. #melodicmay

Never thought i'd say this, but after rereading Gatsby, i find myself on a Fitzgerald kick. 👑📚🍸

bitterbear I thought this side of paradise and the beautiful and the damned were awful... surprisingly enough at the time they were best sellers 7y
beeweird @bitterbear i read some contemporary reviews of Gatsby and This Side of Paradise (because i'm a dork like that) and i guess i'm not the only one who thought FSF's characters are shallow and boring, even if his writing improves in Gatsby. So that was encouraging! 7y
beeweird @bitterbear i havent! Adding it to #TBRpile. Thanks. :) 7y
