A Ghost's Story
A Ghost's Story | Lorna Gibb
5 posts | 1 read | 6 to read
Throughout the 19th and 20th centuries sances and spiritualist meetings grew in popularity. One 'ghost' appeared more than any other, the Katie King spirit. A Ghost's Story presents the mysterious spirit writings and biographical outpourings of Katie King, this famous and enigmatic spirit celebrity. A profound and curious consciousness guided into this realm by the faith of true believers, or the cheap trickery of parlour cheats and exploitative swindlers? Katie King is both, and more. This is the tale of a ghost's quest to understand human faith, loss and passion. It is also the tale of a contemporary scholar desperate to understand the allure of the spirit world, journeying with Katie from the candle-lit drawing rooms of Victorian London to the Imperial Palaces of Tsars; from the shadiest of gimmicks and tricks, to the most poignant sincerity of the death-bed wish. A Ghost's Story announces a narrator like no other, moving in and out of time and space, obstreperous, witty and profoundly honest. Above all, it is an examination of belief and a spectacular insight into what lies on the other side.

A very fascinating read. “A Ghost‘s Story” is essentially a history of the Victorian rise in Spiritualism, (seances, mediums, etc.), told from the POV of Katie King, a “spirit” who was often called upon by a plethora of mediums during the late 19th-early 20th century. Although fictional, it reads in such a way that you often feel as if you‘re reading a factual history book. A must-read for anyone interested in Spiritualism!

The reason why I‘m awake right now. Not because I‘m scared, (nothing scary in this book), but because I can‘t put it down!

Well, that and because I slept for nearly 12 hours yesterday due to being sick. I feel better now, though.

I found this passage particularly funny, as The Merchant‘s House Museum is notoriously haunted. The book is told from the POV of a “spiritual entity”, by the way. 😃

Ghost update.

Thank you all for your well-wishes and support.

Ghost has to wear the cone of prevention. We are not calling it cone of shame, since the wound was infected while they vets closed it up. Not my baby's fault.

She has eaten of her own free will and with gusto this morning - I call that progress. The past days I had only her favourite treats that went down.

Antibiotics smell sweat but must taste disgusting.

Scurvygirl 😻😻good to hear! Cats are so resilient. Gus hated the cone so much, he walked backwards the whole time. 6y
julesG @Scurvygirl Ghost, that clever cat, walked backwards under the sofa and, by doing so, slipped the cone off twice. Glad we're going back to the vet tomorrow. I'm leaving the cone off when I'm around. 6y
