Sex with Kings
Sex with Kings | Eleanor Herman
Throughout the centuries, royal mistresses have been worshiped, feared, envied, and reviled. They set the fashions, encouraged the arts, and, in some cases, ruled nations. Eleanor Herman's Sex with Kings takes us into the throne rooms and bedrooms of Europe's most powerful monarchs. Alive with flamboyant characters, outrageous humor, and stirring poignancy, this glittering tale of passion and politics chronicles five hundred years of scintillating women and the kings who loved them. Curiously, the main function of a royal mistress was not to provide the king with sex but with companionship. Forced to marry repulsive foreign princesses, kings sought solace with women of their own choice. And what women they were! From Madame de Pompadour, the famous mistress of Louis XV, who kept her position for nineteen years despite her frigidity, to modern-day Camilla Parker-Bowles, who usurped none other than the glamorous Diana, Princess of Wales. The successful royal mistress made herself irreplaceable. She was ready to converse gaily with him when she was tired, make love until all hours when she was ill, and cater to his every whim. Wearing a mask of beaming delight over any and all discomforts, she was never to be exhausted, complaining, or grief-stricken. True, financial rewards for services rendered were of royal proportions -- some royal mistresses earned up to $200 million in titles, pensions, jewels, and palaces. Some kings allowed their mistresses to exercise unlimited political power. But for all its grandeur, a royal court was a scorpion's nest of insatiable greed, unquenchable lust, and vicious ambition. Hundreds of beautiful women vied to unseat the royal mistress. Many would suffer the slings and arrows of negative public opinion, some met with tragic ends and were pensioned off to make room for younger women. But the royal mistress often had the last laugh, as she lived well and richly off the fruits of her "sins." From the dawn of time, power has been a mighty aphrodisiac. With diaries, personal letters, and diplomatic dispatches, Eleanor Herman's trailblazing research reveals the dynamics of sex and power, rivalry and revenge, at the most brilliant courts of Europe. Wickedly witty and endlessly entertaining, Sex with Kings is a chapter of women's history that has remained unwritten -- until now.

If you take this book for pure entertainment value it is great. I would read it again for some laughs. However, as a history im not sure what I am supposed to be getting out of it other than kings loved their mistresses more than their wives and court was a vipers pit.

This book is killing me and not in a good way. While the author writes well, she doesnt go chronologically or by geographic region when talking about the mistresses and kings. This causes a confusing and disjointed reading of the material. Herman also only cites quotes and nothing else. This makes me wary of believing her very detailed history of these women and men. Ive also noticed some differences with The King's Bed by Jordan

Finished The King's Bed and I've decided that I might as well move from one sex filled history to another!

It'll be interesting to see what liberties she'll take with the history considering she has no formal historical research foundation.

So I snuck out during my lunch break to visit the used book store and picked up this book (my particular brand of Feminism is that Courtesans were badass Self-made women who played the system to their advantages, so this book interests me) and this author photo Got Me. Like, I'm into this subject, but Eleanor Herman is clearly Into. It.

It's a great book with a ton of fascinating historical factoids. A little awkward to tote around on the metro, but worth the funny looks.

While the stories were attention grabbing, the organization of the book left much to be desired. :(

Today's thrift store haul is brought to you by social histories! A book about famous mistresses throughout history, one about the "greatest stories never told," and one about two society women in 1916 who braved the Colorado frontier.❤️❤️❤️

razmanda Sex with Kings is fun!!! And so is Sex with Queens. We read both years ago for an "erotic" book club. ? 8y
Leelee08 @razmanda ooh, I'm excited now! 8y
ValerieAndBooks I did not know about Sex With Kings. I must find it now! The others look good too. 8y

Leelee08 @ValerieAndBooks I thought so, too! I lucked out today😀😀 8y
jpmcwisemorgan Thrift stores are a great place to get books. In Austin we have someplace called Recycled Reads that sells library books removed from the shelves and books that are donated. It's all to help the library system here. It's super cheap and awesome. I have to be careful because I walk out with a haul. 8y
Leelee08 @jpmcwisemorgan I'm the same way. I could buy books at every thrift store I go to. Recycled Reads sounds awesome. Our local library has a used bookstore which is pretty much the same premise. It's like heaven. 😍 8y
jpmcwisemorgan @Leelee08 I used to work at a thrift store with a 50% discount on books and my acquisition borders on hoarding. In the last year I drastically cut back on the physical books I have. Don't tell anyone about my ebook collection. 😉 8y
Leelee08 @jpmcwisemorgan Ha! I know what you mean! My husband has almost put a ban on my book-buying. 🤓 8y
jpmcwisemorgan @Leelee08 I'm trying to be more selective and ebooks. I've promised myself to make better use of the library. 8y
Sydsavvy Wow what a great title! 💃💃💃 8y
Leelee08 @Sydsavvy It definitely caught my eye!😍 8y
rubyslippersreads I really liked Nothing Daunted. 8y
Sydsavvy I suspect that "Sex with Paupers" would be much better though! ??? 8y
Leelee08 @rubyslippersreads I am really eager to start that one. I can't believe I'd never heard of it. @Sydsavvy 😂 8y
iread2much Those all sound like good reads! I enjoyed sex with kings, although I thought the companion, sex with queens, was a bit more fun 8y
Leelee08 @iread2much I need to give Sex with Queens a look!😀 8y
Bookish_B I read Sex With Kings. Awkward title to carry around & read in public 😳😊 8y

Pickpick

I love hearing stories of mistresses through the ages. Not to mention learning how certain mistresses shaped politics over the centuries.
