The cartoonist of This One Summer and SuperMutant Magic Academy explores the virtual and IRL world of contemporary women via a lens both surreal and wry A woman post-breakup becomes obsessed with the mirror Facebook of herselfseeing a life that could be hers. Another woman, besieged by bed bugs, studies her relationship and the effects her recently-ended secret affair has on it. An anonymous music file surfaces on the internet and a cult springs up in its wake. A group of city animals briefly open their minds to us; A woman finds her clothes growing baggy, her shoes looser, as she shrinks the world around her recedes. Jillian Tamaki brings her combined characteristic realism and humor to her first collection of short stories. Boundless explores the lives of women and how the expectations of others influence their real and virtual selves. Mixing objective reality, speculative fiction, out-and-out fantasy, and a matter-of-fact feminism, Tamaki shows herself to be a short story talent equal to her peers Adrian Tomine and Eleanor Davis. As Tamaki experiments with art styles, we see hyper-realist detailing dueling with thick chunky blocks of ink, each delicately setting the mood for her characters inner turmoil.

Gloriously bizarre and very beautiful. I wish there were more graphic novel short story collections in the world and this is a great example of the genre. Slightly gothic, very slightly horror, but mainly contemplative and weird, this was literally everything I want from short stories.

Lindy Adrian Tomine incorporates an eeriness in some of his stories. Have you read 3y

3.5 stars. A weird and quirky creative collective of short stories in graphic novel form. As with all short story collections, I liked some more than others, but I was extremely impressed with the variety and creativity of both the text and the art.

Loved this collection of graphic short stories, only wish they were longer. Strange, weird and wonderful tales of a woman who keeps shrinking, a bed bug infestation, a cult like skin care product, a variation of Facebook that makes characters question reality, plus many more. Sketched throughout with seemingly effortless illustrations.

Tamaki‘s short story collection is a surreal read with a variety of illustrative styles that show the breadth of her talent. There‘s so much to talk about here. I think I found a contender for my summer book club. Highly, highly recommended.

This is also my ‘B‘ in @BookishMarginalia ‘s ListyAtoZ challenge. #LitsyAtoZ2019

A common thread to all of the shorts stories in this book is an atmosphere of being present. What I mean by that is that it feel like I‘m being told a story by Tamaki, that she‘s right hear telling me tall tales in a somber voice. It‘s gorgeous.

Boundless feels very experimental, but only in that Tamaki seems to be continually stretching herself creatively. I love being swept away into each now tale. Sometimes she uses sketchy lines, sometimes clean. Her change of style brings in or takes away energy in the narrative.

Today is a major self-care day for me. Just before New Years we lost our beloved oldest girl, Ellie. My heart hurts so much and it was one of the toughest decisions I have ever had to make. Ultimately her broken body could no longer hold her amazing spirit. So for now the laundry will have to sit, and the tree will have to wait. RIP my good girl, I know you are already having amazing new adventures with squirrels and tennis balls. #dogsoflitsy

Today‘s #Riotgram prompt is #someoneelsesbooks and I couldn‘t resist because most all of my reading is of someone else‘s books: the library‘s! Here are pictures of my library book shelf, my oldest‘s library book shelf, and my current checkout total. 😳 I don‘t know what I would do without my library. I‘m sure it would involve tears.

mcipher I'm right there with you! Library love ❤️ 7y

This was eerie and beautiful. A little bit messed up. Almost always one step away from sinister. I liked it.

A quick scan of my bookshelf shows that this is the only book with #cursive on it, and only on the spine. Interesting.

Short stories in graphic novel form. Alternately whimsical and melancholy.

Boundless is a graphic novel made up of a bunch of short stories, which were all interesting. "Half Life" was my favourite. I didn't realize until I finished that Jillian Tamaki also illustrated This One Summer, which I read earlier today. As someone that doesn't read many graphic novels, what are the odds I would pick up two of hers (a YA and an adult one) for this readathon?! #24in48

These were little graphic vignettes. Some we're better then others, but I really liked the overall tone and feel of the book.

I'm in awe of the sheer variety in this thick #graphicnovel collection. Pop culture with a liberal dose of weirdness: mysterious mirror Facebook accounts suddenly show up; a woman doesn't stop shrinking; an audio file acts like a drug on a generation of listeners. The art styles also vary from story to story; it's as much a pleasure to dip in and out as to read straight through. Tamaki is an artistic genius. #CanLit #queerbooks

Most women use a hodgepodge of products. What they don't know is that they can be double-loading on many common yet toxic chemicals: carbon, benzophenone, naphthalene. You might as well be rubbing nail polish remover on your face! While we can't legally guarantee results, I can link you to hundreds of testimonials.

One of the stories in this collection is 'Body Pods,' about the bizarre coincidence of the bisexual narrator's serial monogamy affairs with lovers who all have an obsession with the same movie, and tragedies happen that are connected to the movie.
"None of the Body Pods principals died during the brief time Marcella and I were together, but the property was acquired by Disney."
(I Googled this movie because I wasn't sure if it was an invention.)

I feel Super Mutant Magic Academy in the one-shots, the flinches in response to the social gaze, introspection that ends up stagnant. It was like staring at something you shouldn't look at for far too long. Jillian Tamaki's books make me feel unmoored, open. Beautiful.

I've liked everything I've read of Jillian Tamaki's, but I LOVE her when she's weird. These stories are so clearly from the brain that brought us SuperMutant Magic Academy and 😍😍😍
