This was a very dense book, but fascinating all the same. It wasn‘t difficult to read, nor were there any boring parts; there‘s just a *lot* to read and take in - a great travelogue.

I‘m using this for #turkmenistan but may yet use it for further countries if I struggle towards the end of the #readingasia2021 challenge!

There are 14 countries included, some very short visits and some much longer - see below for all those covered.

Librarybelle Good to know so many countries covered! I‘ve not read anything by Theroux, but this may be one to check out. 3y
BarbaraBB Well done! I always like Theroux‘ train travels! 3y
Smarkies I've got this as one of my potential books for readingasia 3y

4 books I borrowed from my Mum this morning, when handing over her shopping on the doorstep. They‘re all for #readingasia2021 and I‘m hoping to get to at least two of them this month.

The tagged book I‘m using for #turkmenistan but may cheat and add a few more countries as I go along! 😉

The Fishing Fleet is #india and Three Cups of Tea is #pakistan. The Golden Chersonese I‘m using for #singapore but also covers other countries.

rockpools That‘s a very inviting collection of books there! How‘s your map of Asia looking? 3y
squirrelbrain 12 countries ticked off so far Rachel @rockpools, but all small ones so it looks a bit sparse! 3y
Librarybelle I‘ll be curious to see what you think of the tagged book! 3y

Pretty good, a lot of interesting information but his preoccupation with the sex industry/descriptions of women are off putting for me.

slategreyskies Thanks for the warning. I‘m definitely going to give this one a pass now. 4y

Really fascinating! So much better than Great Railway Bazaar, he is way less dickish in this one so far.

“Travel can induce such a distinct and nameless feeling of strangeness and disconnection in me that I feel insubstantial, like a puff of smoke, merely a ghost, a creepy revenant from the underworld, unobserved and watchful among real people, wandering, listening while remaining unseen.”

As Theroux retraces a previous journey through a dozen countries in Asia, the Middle East, and Europe, he discovers what has changed — and what has endured.

“I think most serious and omnivorous readers are alike – intense in their dedication to the word, quiet-minded, but relieved and eagerly talkative when they meet other readers and kindred spirits.”
