The immersion of Vietnam - tragic injuries, constant loss, faithful hope, senseless chaos,& everyday life at the O club was phenomenal. friendship between women, the love between Frankie& Jamie, lust with rye, & with family dynamics of the McGraths w loss of brother Finley. The second half of the book seemed long winded with quick punches in plot changes that didn‘t match the first half of the book. incredible esp for fans of historical fiction!!

A girl or teenager secretly takes a study abroad in Vietnam to find her mother's family and meets the writer/food vendor of her dreams. This was pretty cute and there was a lot of attention paid to the culture and setting. Both characters' fears and griefs were well explored. I couldn't decide if the characters were Middle schoolers or high schoolers though. I think high school? They often felt much younger. #LGBTQIA #AAPI #Vietnam #Food

If this wasn‘t for book club I wouldn‘t have finished it, honestly. I found it bizarre and very difficult to follow. There were parts that I laughed about or otherwise enjoyed, and it did come together at the end in a mostly satisfying way, but it was a lot of work to get there.

Love this book! Complex and deeply thought provoking with pulp fiction and spy master vibes. Sweet business.

I‘ve know this author for YA works but “Fallen Angels” doesn‘t really fit there. It‘s frequently challenged because of the adult-level language & realistic depiction of the Vietnam War.
I did a search, fun facts from AAVM: African American Veterans Monument (https://aavmwny.org/war/vietnam-war)
Okay yes and “fun” is rather a stretch. I‘ll have to post the full quote below BUT I would recommend this read. It‘s brutal as you‘d expect.
