Lucrezia Borgia
Lucrezia Borgia: Life, Love, and Death in Renaissance Italy | Sarah Bradford
8 posts | 3 read | 19 to read
The very name Lucrezia Borgia conjures up everything that was sinister and corrupt about the Renaissanceincest, political assassination, papal sexual abuse, poisonous intrigue, unscrupulous power grabs. Yet, as bestselling biographer Sarah Bradford reveals in this breathtaking new portrait, the truth is far more fascinating than the myth. Neither a vicious monster nor a seductive pawn, Lucrezia Borgia was a shrewd, determined woman who used her beauty and intelligence to secure a key role in the political struggles of her day. Drawing from a trove of contemporary documents and fascinating firsthand accounts, Bradford brings to life the art, the pageantry, and the dangerous politics of the Renaissance world Lucrezia Borgia helped to create.

I watched the TV series “The Borgias” years ago when it was shown on TV. Her father was chosen to be the Pope in 1492 and his rapacity is seen as the most corrupt in Vatican history.

This is the story of Lucrezia, deemed the most beautiful women of her time. She had been engaged 3 times before she was 13, at 13 she was mad for the first time. Her father had her marriages annulled and husbands killed as he saw fit. Her 3rd marriage was her last,

AnneCecilie making her the Duchess of Ferrara. She was a good administrator and as her husband was of fighting in wars, she would take care of everything in Ferrara. 9mo
AnneCecilie This was my #SexDrugsandRockandRoll book July. I went in a different way than most. But there was more than enough sex, poison and doing what you want here. @BarbaraBB @Cinfhen 3rd book finished for #RushAThon @Andrew65 @DieAReader @GHABI4ROSES (edited) 9mo
BarbaraBB Fab choice for the prompt! 9mo

This is a really good book if you are interested in the real history of the Borgia family rather than the sensationalized stories often used in soapy tv dramas. I learned a lot - I recommend for anyone wanting to know more about the family or the time period. Well annotated, which is always a plus, by chapter in the source notes section at the end.

StellaDz I‘ve had this book sitting on my shelf for years!! 4y
Ericalambbrown @StellaDz me, too! I finally got to it and I‘m glad I did 4y

Done spending time with Lucrezia for #LitsyAtoZ. Did you know that some people theorize this Raphael painting (peep that cutoff unicorn in the lower left) is supposed to be Lucrezia Borgia? Anyway, this biography is dense with a lot of seemingly unrelated tangents about the men in her life. Lucrezia is interesting, but there's just not a lot of focus on her. Mercifully for this dense read, Lucrezia dies at 39 so it is over fairly quickly.

LeahBergen I've always found her fascinating. 7y
drbethandherkindle @LeahBergen I agree! I wish there was more information left about her so we could know more facts 7y
AlaMich "Lucrezia dies at 39 so it is all over fairly quickly." Well if that don't sum up yer opinion in a nutshell...? 7y
