You Don't Know Me | Imran Mahmood
17 posts | 10 read | 22 to read
An unnamed defendant stands accused of murder. Just before the Closing Speeches, the young man sacks his lawyer, and decides to give his own defence speech. He tells us that his barrister told him to leave some things out. Sometimes, the truth can be too difficult to explain, or believe. But he thinks that if he's going to go down for life, he might as well go down telling the truth. There are eight pieces of evidence against him. As he talks us through them one by one, his life is in our hands. We, the reader - member of the jury - must keep an open mind till we hear the end of his story. His defence raises many questions... but at the end of the speeches, only one matters: Did he do it?

I gave this brilliant book a ‘Pick‘ a couple of years ago; anticipating TV debut, makers of The Crown and Mrs. Wilson to create; should be good! https://deadline.com/2020/02/bbc-adapting-you-dont-know-me-tom-edge-snowed-in-12...

It dips a bit in the middle, but other than that a solid pick. A lot more than just a crime novel, looking at society, gangs and pressures of living in certain areas. The author does a good explanation of the ideas behind the book, makes you think.

squirrelbrain I liked this one too.... I saw the author speak at an event last year - very interesting! 5y
TrishB @squirrelbrain I just read your review! Very similar feelings to me, at one point I thought I‘m done with this slang, but carried on as I wanted to see what happened. I was annoyed at the ending at first, but it‘s about the story and society I think. And not having a voice. 5y
squirrelbrain I just re-read my own review 😳 - how funny that we both said it dipped in the middle! The author (a barrister who often defends these cases) was very clear that he wanted to give a voice to such young men and he wanted it to be authentic and I do think he succeeded in this. 5y
TrishB @squirrelbrain he definitely did! 5y

A different take on a crime novel / courtroom drama, but one that I really enjoyed. A teenage #badboy takes to the stand to present his own closing argument in a murder trial.

I wasn‘t sure whether I would enjoy this book as it‘s told from the POV and in the voice of a young man from London who is accused of shooting someone. He gives his own closing statement in court and we take the part of the jury. Whilst it dipped a bit in the middle (too many ‘innits‘!) and the ending frustrated me, I would highly recommend this if you‘re looking for something a little bit out of the ordinary. Very clever!

Last event of The Literature Festival today - it‘s been a fab weekend! Imran Mahmood talked about his work as a defence lawyer and how that inspired his book. (Funny story about a defendant who denied it was him on CCTV evidence, but was wearing the exact same outfit in court that he was wearing when he committed the crime on CCTV!)

Looking forward to reading the book....

eraderneely Sounds like you had a great time at the Literature Festival 5y

This is the story of a young man charged with a gang-related murder, who chooses to give his own closing statement disclosing what 'really happened‘.

Mahmood has done brilliant things. This book certainly has pacing imperfections, but makes me very much look forward to whatever else Mahmood might produce.

Tana French blurb, which was enough for me to buy it. Plus the cover. Incredibly good and affecting. Accused fires barrister and makes his own closing statement, the entirety of the book. Would you believe him?
